Figurative numbers<br />
Figurative numbers are numbers that can be represented by arrangements<br />
of regular polygons that grow proportionally, starting at 1. By following<br />
the patterns, each set of figurative numbers can be extended as far as<br />
required.<br />
Triangular numbers<br />
Triangular numbers are those that can<br />
be represented by objects or symbols<br />
arranged in the shape of a triangle.<br />
These can also be shown in two other ways:<br />

Square numbers<br />
Square numbers are those obtained by<br />
multiplying a number by itself, <strong>and</strong> can<br />
be represented by objects or symbols<br />
arranged in the shape of a square.<br />
These can also be shown as:<br />

When any two consecutive triangular<br />
numbers are joined, they form a square<br />
number; e.g. 6 + 3 = 9.<br />
