List of mathematical terms
Pattern blocks
Sets of plastic, wood or foam shapes
in the form of triangles, rhombuses,
squares, trapeziums and hexagons.
Pegboard
A plastic or wooden board containing
a set pattern of holes into which pegs
can be placed.
Pentagon
A five-sided polygon [see p. 87].

Pentomino

Percent/Percentage (%)
Hundredths. [The symbol % originates
from the name 100.]
e.g.
7 percent is 7 hundredths;
15% = 15 / 100
Perfect number
A counting number which is the sum of
all its factors except itself.
Perimeter
The length of the boundary of a plane
region. [From the Greek peri meaning
‘around’ and metron meaning
‘measure’.]
Permutation
The ordered arrangement of a set of
objects or symbols.
Perpendicular
At right angles. [From the Latin
perpendiculum, for a hanging plumb
line.]
e.g.
6 is a perfect number because
the factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6,
and 1 + 2 + 3 = 6.

e.g.
There are six possible permutations
for the three letters A, B, C; i.e.
ABC, ACB, BAC, CAB, BCA, CBA.

Pi ()
The Greek letter used in mathematics to indicate the ratio of the
circumference to the diameter of any circle; i.e. ≈ 3.1416.
