Issue 289
February 2019
Hello
Welcome to this issue of The Garage.
Welcome to this issue of The Garage
THERE’S definitely a case for seeing
a car’s battery as being THE unsung
hero: It’s completely ignored, and
sometimes even forgotten about, until
it decides to call it a day. And we
all know what happens next: Driver puts key
in the ignition, turns the key, and… nothing.
Then, of course, a motorist thinks about
the battery, but by then they’re late for work,
or getting their children to school, or catching
a train – well, you get my drift.
There’s no getting away from just how
much more work a battery does today, compared
with that in a car 20 years ago. There’s
clearly more electronic wizardry controlling
the engine management system, the steering,
any number of safety systems, not to mention
all those entertainment features today’s
drivers and passengers evidently require.
But let’s go back to replacing the battery.
These days it’s vital – particularly with stop/
start systems, to fit the correct type, but as
we know, changing a battery isn’t as quick as
it used to be. And, in some cases, you have to
find where it’s located, as putting the battery
in the engine bay is becoming very much a
thing of the past.
This issue also takes a look at exhausts –
the management systems and the emissions
systems that control just how much gas (and
of course how many pollutants) – and just
how this sector is advancing technically. And
while there’s no denying those advances, today’s
workshops cannot give this segment a
miss, because doing so hands work back to
the main dealer network.
Things have moved on since the introduction
of catalytic convertors and diesel particulate
filters, and they provide good regular
income, especially come replacement time.
But so too can exhaust system replacements,
because while they last longer than they used
to, they can be damaged or suffer from the
damp build-up resulting from too many
short journeys.
So there we have it – two market sectors
still bringing in good regular work, - and
profitably too.
All the best!
LUBRICANTS COMPANY
HAS BEEN HARNESSING
TALENT FOR 150 YEARS
RECRUITING and
training the next generation
of talent to
develop new ideas
for the future growth
of the business have been key
elements of the success story
at one of the UK’s leading independent
lubricants firms.
Shrewsbury-based Morris
Lubricants celebrates 150
years in business in 2019
and this longevity could not
have been achieved without
harnessing and nurturing the
talent and energy of its loyal
workforce, which today numbers
250.
For five generations the
company has focused on
quality, innovation, flexibility
and trust across the entire
business, which was founded
by entrepreneur James Kent
Morris in 1869.
Staff training and development
have been crucial
to keep the company up to
speed in a fast-moving industry
where a competitive edge
and first class customer service
are paramount.
Company chairman Andrew
Goddard, a fifth-generation
descendant of James
Kent Morris, recognises that
his employees are the backbone
of the business and
their security and fulfilment
at work are essential.
“We try to go the extra mile
to ensure that we offer a supportive
and enriching workplace,”
he said. “As a result,
we have been rewarded by a
loyal staff with long service to
the company and a very low
turnover rate.
Euro Car Parts providing FiberFix for repairers
A RANGE of professional repair products,
claiming to be ten times stronger than
duct tape, is now available to repairers and
bodyshops through Euro Car Parts. The
leading distributor of car and LCV parts has
added the US-based FiberFix brand to its
consumables portfolio, available now from
more than 300 branches nationwide.
The FiberFix Repair Wrap Pro combines
industrial-strength fibres and special resins
into a wrap capable of bonding to almost
any material, before hardening like steel
to provide a permanent fix. The product
is ideally suited to automotive repairs,
particularly when repairing small holes in
exhaust pipes and other high temperature
tubes. Euro Car Parts is also stocking the
FiberFix Flex Patch, an adhesive fibre
reinforced repair solution used for repairs
that cannot be wrapped.
The FiberFix range is the latest brand
to expand Euro Car Parts’ consumables
offering, which has also been boosted
by the XCP Professional portfolio of
maintenance, lubrication and rust protection
sprays. Unique to the range is the XCP
Professional Green spray, a product
made with more than 99.9% bio-based,
renewable, and sustainable ingredients.
Helen Robinson, marketing director
at Euro Car Parts, commented: “We are
committed to offering the widest range
of professional consumable products to
repairers throughout the UK, which is
why we continue to form exciting new
partnerships with leading brands such
as FiberFix and XCP. We are looking
forward to adding further products from
these manufacturers to our range moving
forward.”
“Training, development
and providing opportunities
for talented young people to
progress within the company
are vitally important to the
business.
“Our on-site laboratories,
equipped with high specification
equipment, keep us at
the cutting edge of lubricant
testing and analysis. Combined
with a highly skilled
workforce of chemists, chemical
engineers and product
managers, we ensure that
our products are world leading
in terms of both quality
and performance.”
With an eye on the future,
the company launched a
graduate recruitment programme
in 2015. Kyle Gleeson,
30, from Tamworth and
Owen Lloyd, 25, from Church
Stretton, were the first graduates
to join the programme
and are now holding down
key jobs within the company.
Both have spent time working
in departments across the
company to gain a greater understanding
of how the business
operates in home and
international markets.
Kyle, an international business
studies honours graduate
of Sheffield Hallam University,
is now commercial
manager in the export department.
He achieved the United
Kingdom Lubricants Association
(UKLA) Certificate of
Lubricant Competence with a
distinction and an Institute of
Leadership and Management
(ILM) qualification.
During his time in the technical
department, he was
heavily involved in redeveloping
the company’s unique
“What Oil Do I Need?” innovation.
This database allows
Morris Lubricants to make
an oil recommendation remotely
online based on details
including vehicle registration,
make or model.
He was then transferred to
the production department
where he supported the introduction
of a new computer
system and liaised with
customers throughout the
process. He was also heavily
involved in a new business
venture in India, visiting
Mumbai to meet staff,
customers and suppliers to
gain a better understanding
of how the company and mar
Owen, an agricultural engineering
graduate of Harper
Adams University, is now a
buyer in the purchasing department.
With the UKLA Certificate
of Lubricant Competence
and an ILM qualification under
his belt, he is now seeking
to become a Member of
the Chartered Institute of
Procurement and Supply, an
internationally recognised
award which represents the
global standard within the
profession for a procurement
and supply professional.
“Having had a really good
grounding, I hope to contribute
to the company’s success
over the coming years,” said
Owen.
Mr Goddard says talented
young employees, like Kyle
and Owen, represent the
company’s future. “For the
company to continue to develop
and thrive in the future,
it’s essential that we recruit
talented young graduates
who can make a telling contribution
to the business,” he
added.
Exhibitor day returns
as more businesses sign up for Automechanika Birmingham 2019
Automechanika
Birmingham is
hosting an Exhibitor
Day designed to
ensure exhibiting
companies leverage as much
as possible out of the show
and enhance visitor experience.
The event is due to take
place on 21 March at Birmingham
NEC and comes
after 2018’s exhibitor day
received an overwhelming
‘thumbs up’ from all who attended.
With more aftermarket
businesses committed
to taking part in this year’s
trade show in June, many exhibitors
are signing up to the
helpful exhibitor day.
Major names already committed
to the 2019 exhibition
include Schaeffler, ZF,
DENSO, MAHLE Aftermarket,
Delphi Technologies,
Valeo, Bosch, Hella, Bilstein
Group, MANN + HUMMEL,
NGK and Yuasa, with new
names signed up to exhibit
including Apec Braking Ltd,
BM Catalysts, Draper Tools,
GROUPAUTO, Morris Lubricants,
OESSA, Texa UK and
Total UK.
As well as giving this year’s
exhibitors the chance to seize
upon invaluable networking
opportunities with fellow automotive
businesses, it will
provide an ideal opportunity
for them to share their stand
plans with the press, in time
for preview issues.
The day will also arm them
with a raft of information
including presentations on
pre-show marketing, attracting
visitors to the stand and
making best use of the networking
facilities available.
In addition, this year will
welcome professional training
providers 12th Man Solutions
to the exhibitor day,
where the company’s exhibitions
division ProExTra will
be delivering a fast-paced,
interactive session and sharing
practical hints, tips and
advice to help inspire exhibitors
and generate a stronger
ROI from this year’s show.
A number of event suppliers
will also be in attendance,
on hand to offer discounts to
exhibitors on furniture packages,
stand designs, catering
and scanners to capture visitor
data.
With over 10,200 automotive
industry personnel attending
the highly successful
2018 event, alongside
500 exhibitors from over
120 companies spanning 26
countries, 2019 promises to
see the return of leading suppliers.
New initiatives will
include the Bodyshop Training
Hub, a new Aftermarket
Innovation Showcase, Retail
Accessories Village, and central
Visitor Highway to name
a few, with more details to be
shared at March’s event.
Nichola Reeder, Director
and Co-Founder of 12th
relishing working with Automechanika
Birmingham and
applying our in-depth experience
in delivering training
workshops for major
industry names. Our aim is
to inspire exhibitors, helping
them to find their unique
voice and speak passionately
about their brand to influence
buyers and visitors at
the show.”
Jack Halliday, Event Director
of Automechanika Birmingham,
said: “Our objective
is to give exhibitors the
best support possible, ensuring
they are fully equipped to
contribute to delivering one
of the best visitor experiences
yet at this year’s show.
“12th Man Solutions’ involvement
this year adds an
extra dimension for our exhibitors,
and will help to unleash
their inner exhibitionist
in order for them to reap
the full benefits of showcasing
their products and services
in front of thousands of
visitors.”
“Lighting is shaping vehicle
design more than ever and the
demand for individualisation
and differentiation will continue
Additionally, lighting can also
contribute to communication
and safety in automated driving
scenarios,” said HELLA
CEO Dr. Rolf Breidenbach.
“By further deepening the
collaboration with our longstanding
partner Plastic Omnium,
opportunities to further drive
these market trends and offer
our customers new levels of
freedom in terms of functionality
and design.”
“This new partnership between
with combined technologies
and solutions, bringing
together the best of the knowhow
from both companies
on new styling and advanced
functionalities for the body
exterior. This will enhance the
offer towards our customers
in the fields of smart bumpers
VXPRO LAMBDA SENSORS
First fitted to passenger cars in the 1970s, to
improve the engine’s combustion efficiency
and reduce exhaust emissions, the lambda
sensor is now a key component within the
engine management system.
In order to operate efficiently, an internal combustion
engine requires the correct ratio of air and fuel in its
cylinders during the combustion process, the ideal –
known as lambda – being 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel
for a petrol engine and 14.5:1 for a diesel.
Lambda sensors operate by measuring the amount of
oxygen in the exhaust, to allow the engine management
system to make the necessary adjustments to remain as
close as possible to the mixture ideal.
So precise have these measurements now become,
that many vehicles feature several lambda sensors
situated in the exhaust system, both before and after
the catalytic converter.
As global emissions standards have become ever
more stringent, the variety and complexity of lambda
sensors has increased accordingly and now includes
zirconia, titanium, planar and wideband.
The growth in their use has led to an explosion in the
necessary part numbers to cater for the huge variety
of applications for which they are now required. This
makes holding the correct stock profile a complicated
and potentially costly exercise.
Naturally, the lambda sensors offered by ELTA
Automotive, through its growing VXPRO brand,
conform to strict matching original equipment
specification, to provide workshops with the quality
replacement sensors they need on a daily basis.
However, what really sets the range apart is the
attention the ELTA team has put into reducing the
number of parts it offers, while maintaining the vehicle
coverage on which the independent sector relies.
This masterstroke has been achieved by
concentrating on the length of the cables, which is the
defining characteristic that results in the need for so
many part numbers.
By retaining the matching OE sensor/connector
combination and ensuring the cable is always equal
to or slightly longer than the OE part, but never with
more than 300mm excess length, the ELTA team has
consolidated the VXPRO range to maintain the same
vehicle coverage, from a fifth of the part numbers!
Progress Recruitment warns garages
2019 is set to be an employee’s market
Norwich-based automotive recruitment
specialist Progress Recruitment says 2019
looks set to be an employee’s market.
SKILLED qualified
technicians seem set
to be in much demand
across the industry
once again.
Laura Rycroft, Managing
Director at Progress Recruitment,
said: “When I began my
recruitment career in 2009,
22 dealerships in my region
closed and dealers had people
queuing at the doors with
their CVs looking for work.
“But now the tables have
turned! Fully qualified vehicle
technicians are now in
great demand.”
A recent survey by Progress
Recruitment, conducted in
October 2018 found 96 per
cent of garages agreed that
skilled technicians were ‘very
important’ or ‘vital’ but just
two per cent found recruitment
‘very easy’.
Almost half indicated they
had at times been unable to
recruit the people they needed.
With fewer young technicians
entering the trade than
there are retiring, accompanied
by the escalation of new
vehicle technology, the industry
is experiencing a ‘skills
crunch’.
Progress Recruitment
themselves are working to
address the issue by extending
the reach of its MOT Tester
training courses, developed
in partnership with the
Independent Garage Association
(IGA) to individuals who
are looking to self-fund their
training to enhance their
skills and experience.
Political uncertainties are
unlikely to help. The Institute
of the Motor Industry (IMI)
believes new immigration
laws could exclude current
employees and exacerbate
the skills shortage in future.
Ensuring that homegrown
automotive talent is
sufficiently qualified to help
bridge the potential gap has
never been more important.
Laura said: “As a specialist
agency, Progress Recruitment
can help garages find
the technical team they need
from our extensive candidate
database, our talent acquisition
channels and our
proven screening services,
saving busy garages owner’s
time and hassle.”
The time saved by garages
on hiring can then be invested
back into developing staff
retention and development
plans for the business.
Of all the candidates
placed by Progress in 2018,
59% of the jobs filled were
aftersales based and 35% of
these positions were technical
roles. The average salary
offered increased, as did the
additional benefits offered
to further entice the candidates.
NEWS
POWERFLEX BUSHES REVEALS NEW AUDI A2
UPRATED POLYURETHANE SUSPENSION BUSHES
AUDI’S A2 was way
ahead of its time.
When it came out
prestige brands
didn’t do small
hatchbacks, and as a consequence
many people didn’t
know what to make of it.
While sales were sluggish,
this wasn’t due to any lack of
quality or ability.
You might expect Audi’s attention
to detail to wane, but
not a bit of it; no other small
car is built this well, and the
onslaught of more ‘premium’
brands launching competitor
products means that the Supermini
market is now flooded
with big names and very
well-built small cars.
Cherished for both its fuel
efficiency and innovative design,
not to mention the fact
that you couldn’t actually
open the bonnet to even look
at the engine, the Audi A2
has become something of a
modern classic already. With
plenty still on the road, and
mileages creeping up all of
the time, many are sure to be
in need of some polyurethane
upgrades.
Hence Powerflex Bushes,
Europe’s No.1 polyurethane
suspension bush manufacturer
and supplier, opted to
launch a new Front Wishbone
Front Bush to overcome the
fact that many of the OE rubber
bushes may have cracked
or worn during the lifetime of
the vehicle. Luckily, the Powerflex
fit and forgot lifetime
warranty means that you’ll
never have to renew again
if you opt for the Road Series,
Purple 80A (durometer)
bushes that are now available.
Powerflex polyurethane
bushes are designed to decrease
the amount of deflection
in your car’s suspension
which improves handling,
driver feedback, and tyre
wear. Powerflex use its own
premium polyurethane formulation
to provide minimal
NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)
and increased longevity
over stock rubber bushings.
PFF3-1001 is a Front Wishbone
Front Bush for the A2
that includes zinc-plated
steel washers to add support
to the end faces of the bush
and provide a smooth operating
surface. Two are required
per car.
Powerflex’s years of experience
developing perfect
polyurethane products has
culminated in every ounce
of research, development
and know-how being invested
into the latest range of
Audi products. Not just for
the ultimate precision when
behind the wheel, but also
from a comfort and compliance
viewpoint. By choosing
Powerflex, you’re not just investing
in a lump of polyurethane,
but also the wisdom
that comes from trying every
possible compound and design
solution out there. For
high wear, heavy-duty applications,
there’s literally no
need to look elsewhere.
Melksham Motor Spares
raise £17,500 for Charity
Me lksham
Motor Spares,
one of the
South West’s
largest independent
motor factors, have
announced the grand total
for their 50th Anniversary
Fundraising is £17,500. The
company, who were established
in Melksham in 1968,
wanted to put fundraising at
the heart of their 2018 Anniversary
celebrations, to
help mark their milestone
birthday. Finance Director,
Alison Cook, explained the
company’s fundraising efforts;
“We were very proud
to have reached our 50th
year and wanted to honour
the memory of our founders,
Bryan and Mary Mattock,
who both sadly passed away
in 2013 from cancer. We felt
fundraising for Cancer Research
UK would be a fitting
tribute, in our 50th year,
to their lifetime’s work and
dedication, which built the
foundations of our success.
We also had several staff
members diagnosed with
cancer in 2017, which was
been a timely reminder of
how cancer touches so many
of our lives. Survival rates
are increasing and progress
is being made, so hopefully
our fundraising will have
gone a little way to helping
with this ongoing research.”
The largest individual fundraiser
was a charity raffle
held at the company’s successful
50th Anniversary
Trade show on June 14th
at Melksham Town Football
Club, which raised £5800.
The raffle’s grand total was
then increased to £7500 by
a further donation from the
company. Staff were asked
to nominate their favourite
charities and a total of 15
charities benefited from the
money raised, each receiving
£500.00. The 15 charities
were; Cancer Research
UK, Julia’s House Children’s
Hospice, Wiltshire Air Ambulance,
Wiltshire Mind,
Dorothy House, Alzheimer’s
Society, Sane, Sands, British
Heart Foundation, MS Society,
Great Ormond Street
Hospital, Ben Automotive
Charity, Diabetes UK, JDRF
and HemiHelp.
In addition to this, a yearlong
campaign of fundraising
events for Cancer Research
UK by staff, plus a generous
personal donation from the
Directors, raised a further
£10,000. Events included
employee’s individual efforts
such as running the Lacock
half marathon and the Color
Obstacle Rush run, as well
as group fundraisers such
as a 50-mile sponsored cycle
ride, charity cycling event at
Castle Combe Race Circuit,
‘Football shirt Friday’ a ‘no
swearing day’, charity walk,
quiz night and their annual
Christmas Jumper Day. This
combined with the £500
from the trade show charity
raffle brought the grand
total for CRUK to a fantastic
£10,500.
The company are no
strangers to fundraising, in
2015, the company spent a
year fundraising for Dorothy
House and raised over
£6,500.00. Phil Dodd, Managing
Director said “We had
very much hoped to replicate
the previous success of our
fundraising efforts during
2018, to have exceeded them
by such a large amount is just
fantastic! We are incredibly
fortunate to have an amazing
team of staff, brilliant customers
and suppliers who
support us and embraced
our efforts again, we cannot
thank them all enough.
It was important to us as a
company to be able to ‘give
something back’ and we are
very proud to have achieved
so much during our anniversary
year and raised such a
substantial amount for so
many worthy causes.”
THE BUGGY
IS BACK AND NOW
IT’S ELECTRIC!
VOLKSWAGEN is bringing a
legend back to life! At the
beginning of March, the
Wolfsburg-based Group will
reveal the first fully electric
version of a new buggy. Taking its cues
from popular American dune buggies,
the concept vehicle is based on the
modular electric drive matrix (MEB),
demonstrating how multifaceted the
new platform truly is.
“A buggy is more than a car. It is
vibrancy and energy on four wheels.
These attributes are embodied by the
new e-buggy, which demonstrates how
a modern, non-retro interpretation
of a classic can look and, more than
anything else, the emotional bond that
electric mobility can create,” states
Klaus Bischoff, Head Designer at
Volkswagen.
The concept of the fully electric buggy
is based on the historical predecessors
that found their home in California.
Back then, the chassis of the Beetle
served as the basis; now, the MEB is
proving to be just as flexible. True to
the original style, this reinterpretation
of a proper buggy has no fixed roof or
conventional doors, while the freestanding
wheels fitted with off-road
tyres and open side sills dominate the
overall look.
The new MEB concept vehicle shows
that this fully electric platform can
be used for more than just largescale
series production models. Like
the Beetle chassis of yesteryear, the
modular electric drive matrix has the
potential to facilitate the development of
low-volume niche series.
The history of recreational vehicles
and Volkswagen technology is a long
one: from the Beetle convertible and
special bodies produced by companies
such as Hebmüller and Rometsch to
fully open designs of the kind embraced
by the Meyers Manx buggy, the Beetle
chassis allowed for creative – and
sometimes exclusive – custom solutions
for decades. Globally, around 250,000
individual vehicles were built as one-offs
or at low volumes through to the 1980s.
The latest one-of-a-kind model, the
fully electric concept buggy, will be
revealed for the first time at the 89th
International Geneva Motor Show (7 to
17 March 2019). The Volkswagen press
conference will start at 10:20 am in Hall
2 on 5 March.
A love for cars
or just a career?
The Garage talks to Stuart James, Director of the IGA
about the decline of future automotive technicians
Vehicle engineering
incorporates
elements of mechanical,
electrical,
electronic, software
and safety segments and as
careers go, this particular
line of work has a variety of
disciplines that offer staggering
diversity and is incredibly
rewarding.
Today the sector is right at
the heart of a rapidly changing
ecosystem meaning contemporary
designs eradicate
harmful gases through space
age wizardry.
As we explore the endless
possibilities of a career in the
automotive sector, why is it
that we are seeing an alarming
rate of Level 1 students
drop out the system? It’s a
situation that is only getting
worse and not any better.
Today it is disappointing to
realise there is a huge skill
shortage in this sector.
Stuart James, Director of
the IGA, is concerned about
the trend and spoke to The
Garage with passion and determination
to halt that slide.
James feels that the focus
appears to have been on students
preparing for higher
education rather than gaining
solid career advice and,
if they had any, it was average
at best. Research suggests
that a staggering number of
students hadn’t received any
career advice at all and that
more and more students
didn’t have a career pathway
when they left school.
It is perhaps understood
that many students see automotive
engineering, in all aspects,
as a career to choose
through a love of cars rather
than a love of the mechanical
side.
This may be a cynical view
and a view not shared by
others, but experience and
meeting a variety of students
leads him to believe that this
is the case. Today’s education
programme stipulates
that you may leave school on
the last day of June if you are
16, but you must either attend
a college course or stay
in full time education until
you are 18.
19 focus Automotive Engineering
Stuart James,
Director of the IGA
James believes that this
is part of the problem. Students
are provided with a
raft of courses but many have
no real idea of what path they
wish to take and have very
little preparation in terms of
help and support.
Colleges are often equipped
with first-class facilities and
James thinks that they could
be more proactive in selling
the profession to prospective
students, and show them the
wealth of opportunities that
the sector has to offer. The
facilities that colleges have
to offer are superb, while
the investment in auto centres
and equipment gives
students first-hand experience
and real life workshop
environments to learn and
understand a variety of technologies.
This is the ideal place for
any aspiring technician to get
started and to understand
the vast array of opportunities
in the industry. Students
benefit from working in reallife
workshop conditions,
and are taught by industrytrained
professionals with a
wide breadth of specialisms.
Vehicle fitting and maintenance
courses are offered
at all levels, taking students
from basic theory and practical
elements about engines,
tyres, brakes, steering and
suspension, right through
to more advanced modules
which work on hi-tech rigs
and live vehicles, to focus on
the diagnosis of complex system
faults.
The college close to The
Garage’s office has a £3.5
million automotive centre,
which includes three state-ofthe-art
specialist workshops,
one of which is soundproofed
for engine and chassis testing.
They also have the latest
automated test lane for MoT
testing, a chassis dynamometer,
engine testing and fault
diagnostics, computerised
four-wheel alignment and
superb tools. The centre also
has strong links with major
motor dealerships, and independent
garages in our surrounding
area.
Another concern that
James raised was that of apprenticeships.
The RMI is a
huge supporter of the programme
and he made reference
to the fear that some
garages have of hiring an apprentice.
He feels there is a
lack of understanding from
garage owners over a number
of issues ranging from
insurance and health and
safety, to tax and PAYE.
James says garages need
to understand that any apprentice
taken on, must
work towards an approved
apprenticeship standard or
framework. They must be
employed in a real working
practice so that they have the
opportunity gain knowledge
and gain the skills needed to
pass their assessment.
It’s vitally important to
remember that apprentices
have the same employment
rights as any other employees
and must be offered paid
holidays, sick pay and any
benefits, along with coaching
or mentoring. He points
out that apprentices are also
open to a business’ disciplinary
processes should the
need arise.
In closing, Stuart James’
concerns are something
that are shared by The Garage
Magazine. The future is
knocking hard at our door
and the industry needs to
secure the next generation
of technicians fast, so that
they are able to grow with
the technology. It’s safe to say
that most of today’s younger
generation are already advanced
in the ways of the microchip,
using various devices
simultaneously with ease,
and understanding code.
It’s in all garages’ interests
to consider an apprenticeship
programme. Get behind
our younger generation and
help them fulfil a passion
that is all encompassing.
AIR HOISTS MAKE FOR SAFE AND
In continuous ownership
by the same family since
1745, J D Neuhaus is
a seventh generation
family-run business
employing over 200 employees
across the group. They
manufacture pneumatically
and hydraulically-operated
hoists and crane systems up
to 115 tonne capacity.
JDN has been at the vanguard
of hoist and crane
technology for over 270
years, whether for moving
heavy or light loads. Products
are manufactured from
a state-of-the-art facility in
Witten, Germany. This globally
unique specialisation
means that J D Neuhaus has
set the quality standard for
the market, a move that has
seen the company become
the established global leader
in its technology field with
customers in more than 90
countries worldwide.
Resilience and reliability
are the key product differentiators,
thanks largely to
their explosive protection
rating which makes them
ideal for use even in the
most challenging of operating
environments. Their
products are in use in over
70 different sectors of industry,
including oil and gas
exploitation, raw materials
processing, mining, chemical
industry, heavy plant
construction, the automotive
industry and many areas
of logistics.
The company’s range today
is broad and featurerich,
ensuring virtually every
type of general application
can be served. Products
available include pneumatic
hoists and cranes, C-rail/
light crane systems, manipulators,
trolleys (including
low headroom versions), big
bag handling hoists, ratchet
hoists and monorail hoists.
The Profi range of air
hoists are known for their
robust design, a characteristic
that makes them suitable
for tough industrial applications,
even in continuous
working processes. Safety
features, such as 100%
duty rating and explosion
protection are an important
advantage when working
in hazardous areas. Put
simply, Profi hoists excel in
places where safety is paramount.
After all, unlike electricity,
compressed air does
not generate sparks, while
overload protection is available
and is often provided as
standard. What’s more, the
chain and hook are manufactured
from high-quality
tempered steels with a
breaking strength some five
times the nominal load.
Carrying capacities from
250 kg to 100 tonnes can
be accommodated by Profi
series air hoists, with 4 or
6 bar pressure compressed
air. As standard, sensitive,
infinitely variable speed control
allows the precise positioning
of loads, a function
that is supported by frequent
switching and extended duty
cycles. Simple operation,
sound absorption and suitability
for lube-free operation
are among further benefits
of these low-headroom,
lightweight hoists.
Low maintenance is also
a primary attribute of the
Profi series, which is insensitive
to dust, humidity and
temperature (from -20°C up
RELIABLE LIFTING
to +70°C). In addition, the
chain sprocket in the midsection
runs in dustproof,
maintenance-free ball bearings,
while the planetary
gear, which features teeth
made from tempered or
hardened high-grade steel,
is lubricated with long-life
grease.
With a heavy focus on
R&D, JDN ensures that its
range continues to evolve.
The company’s latest products
have been engineered
to offer extended service life,
simple operation and ecological
compatibility, all without
any compromise in safety or
performance. Among the latest
innovations from JDN is
a newly developed remote
control concept that brings
exceptional ease-of-use and
convenience to users. Comprising
a transmitter and
receiver, the JDN-RC (Remote
Control) is available
for both new and retrofit applications.
To ensure that users obtain
the best value for money
from their investment in
handling products, the company
can provide offsite/
onsite services including
supervision, installation,
training, inspection, maintenance
and repair. All work
is undertaken under full J D
Neuhaus personnel supervision
and is carried out in cooperation
with external certification
authorities where
required. A full spare parts
provision incorporates support
for the choice of spare
parts, compilation of spare
parts and service kits for retention
in client warehouse
and the shipping of the spare
parts worldwide.
View from the top
Bill Fennell, Chief
Ombudsman and
Managing Director at
The Motor Ombudsman,
the automotive
dispute resolution provider,
takes a look at what we can
expect for the year ahead in
the sector.
Despite the concerns of
political and economic instability
as we start another
year, it’s far from doom and
gloom. Three years ago, the
number of new cars sold in
the UK hit nearly 2.7 million
in the space of 12 months,
an all-time high. More than
500,000 vehicles were registered
in March 2016 alone,
thereby making it the biggest
ever month for sales since the
bi-annual plate change began
in 1999.
The positive repercussion
of this, is that fast forward
to 2019, and these cars will
need to have their first MOT,
which shows the potential
volume of work that could
be going through garages up
and down the country. This is
without taking into account
the older vehicles that were
already on the road prior to
this that still need to be serviced
and repaired, as well as
a used car market which is
expected to remain strong. In
addition, some motorists will
also see their initial threeyear
manufacturer’s warranty
and servicing plan expire in
2019, and may therefore look
beyond the franchise dealer
network for a reputable local
business to continue maintaining
their vehicle.
I think that the aforementioned
figures lay the foundations
for what could be a
profitable period for the independent
garage sector, and
one of the busiest in terms of
the number of cars passing
through workshops. Combined
with what is already
a competitive environment,
with thousands of garages
and MOT stations vying for
business, standing out from
the crowd has never been so
important. This means that
making a good impression on
and offline in the eyes of the
consumer is essential for the
formation of long-term rapport
and trust.
One way for garages to do
this, if they have not already
done so, is to become accredited
to an established
Chartered Trading Standards
Institute (CTSI)-approved
Motor Industry Code of Practice
for Service and Repair,
such as that offered by The
Motor Ombudsman. This allows
them to demonstrate to
both new and existing customers
that they set the bar
high when it comes to the
quality of their service and
workmanship. It also means
that the business has committed
to using Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR) to
help conclude an unresolved
issue with a vehicle owner.
The benefit of this is that it
can steer away complaints
from often costly and timeconsuming
legal action, and
is a facility that a neighbouring
garage may not have the
liberty to offer customers.
In addition to The Motor
Ombudsman’s ongoing investment
in the promotion of
its accredited garage network
that businesses can take advantage
of, social media will
continue to play an important
role within the dispute
resolution
process as we
go through
the year and
beyond. With most products
and services available nowadays
at the click of a button,
consumers equally expect
an instant response when
something goes wrong. From
our own monitoring of the
digital sphere, we are seeing
many turn to Twitter, especially,
in the event of dispute.
They often use the channel as
the first port of call to publically
vent their frustration
in the hope of getting a swift
response to solve their problem
without having to pass
through a more formal procedure.
Nevertheless, although
social media is a useful tool
for answering a basic query,
or for providing an update to
a consumer as part of good
relationship management
strategy, it ultimately does not
serve as a valid substitute for
an effective internal disputes
handling mechanism.
Aside from
the use of social platforms by
consumers as a virtual mouthpiece
to attract attention, we
are encouragingly, also seeing
garages reaping the benefits
of positive marketing exposure
and interaction with
motorists, whether this is
through providing road safety
tips, running prize draws,
or promoting special offers.
With an increasing reliance
on web-based technology for
how we operate and communicate
today, I am sure that
social media will continue to
gain even greater prominence
within independent garages
for the purpose of prospecting
and preserving customer
loyalty, thereby complementing
the more traditional approaches
of advertising and
word of mouth.
Looking ahead in terms of
our own activities, The Motor
Ombudsman itself will be
focused on driving consumer
confidence even higher in the
sector using intelligence gathered
from the latest industry
trends, whilst giving peace
of mind to businesses that
they are implementing best
practice across processes
in their organisations to
deliver satisfaction and
avoid the occurrence of
disputes.
News 26
Following the recent
reports that drivers
are confused by Daytime
running lights
(DRL’s) and what the
legal requirement is for them
being fitted to vehicles, Philips,
inventor of the Daylight
Xenon HID daytime running
lights sheds some light.
Daytime running lights are
designed to make cars more
visible to other road users.
They are LED lights that are
usually incorporated into
a car’s existing headlights
and taillights. So they shine
white at the front and red at
the rear and automatically
switch on when the engine
is running and off when the
main headlights are in use –
i.e. at night.
Studies have shown that
DRLs can reduce the risk of
road accidents. Many new
cars have instruments that
are always illuminated, making
it harder to notice when
the headlights are switched
on. Daytime running lights
Philips sheds a light on it
are a useful failsafe in such
cases, ensuring the car is always
clearly visible.
DRLs have been legally required
to be fitted at the front
of all new EU cars and small
vans since 2011, but even
though some manufacturers
choose to include them at the
rear, this is not compulsory.
Typically, LED DRLs are
integrated into the headlight
clusters of a car and are usually
separate from the dipped
beam lights. The reason
they are separate, is they are
brighter than conventional
dipped lights and as such
should not be used to drive
with at night due to the increased
risk of dazzling oncoming
traffic. DRLs should
never be used as a replacement
for dipped headlights
in low light conditions for
this reason and if there are
no daytime running lights at
the rear of the car. Unless you
turn on your car headlights
when light levels start for fall,
the rear end of your vehicle
will not be illuminated at all.
If your car doesn’t have
daytime running lights, there
are various aftermarket kits
available.
Philips Daylight solution
stays on day and night. During
the day, LED Daylight
makes cars more visible and
more rapidly detectable by
the drivers of other vehicles
or pedestrians moving in the
opposite direction, which, as
a whole, increases road safety.
The system automatically
dims at night.
ENGINE TREATMENTS
COMPANY CLEANING UP
WITH DIESEL CARS
AN increase in the
number of diesel
cars entering the
independent aftermarket
is being
credited as part of the driving
force behind the significant
growth of engine treatments
specialist Tec4.
Throughout the past five
years, the company has
grown from a standing start
to £1.5m turnover, with
demand rising year-onyear
for its range of engine
treatments. In particular,
the company’s Oil System
cleaner and Diesel System
cleaner is in high demand
from independent repairers
looking to carry out preventative
maintenance on three
to four year old diesel cars,
helping customers avoid the
problems associated with
blocked EGR’s and diesel
particulate filters (DPFs).
Tec4’s managing director,
Bob Welch, explained: “Modern
Euro 5 diesel engines
are particularly susceptible
to contamination issues. Extended
service intervals and
stop-start driving all place
a high demand on modern
oils, leading to contamination
build-up on key components
within the engine. If
left, this can lead to oil misting
through the PCV system
contaminating throttle bodies,
inlet and exhaust valves
and gas recirculation valves.
On diesel vehicles, this inevitably
leads to premature
blocking of the DPF, which
can cause significant issues
if not regenerated effectively.
“We’re working with independent
repairers to help
them integrate an engine
flush into the overall cost of
every service for customers.
Not only does this deliver a
noticeable difference in performance,
but it also saves
drivers hundreds of pounds
through improved fuel efficiency
and reduced breakdown
costs.”
To complement Tec4’s successful
4-in-1 carbon cleaning
machine the company
recently launched a new
portable DPF and exhaust
gas recirculation (EGR)
cleaning machine. Although
sales continue to increase,
Tec4 is noticing that smart
repairers are investing more
in preventative maintenance
measures such as engine
treatments
Tec4’s range is continuing
to grow with the company
offering engine treatments, a
‘Workshop Essentials’ maintenance
range, carbon cleaning
machines and associated
cleaning fluids and two new
products specifically for motorcycles.
Autoparts Garage
Equipment new
website grows
New Garage Essentials
section
proves popular
with customers
Autoparts Garage
Equipment (AGE) has
just substantially grown its
new website, GarageEquipmentUK.com,
offering workshops
a wide range of parts
and equipment, as well as a
full comprehensive service
offering, overseeing the designing,
planning and installation
The website, with a fresh,
modern feel and user-friendly
functionality, features
an Equipment section with
various product categories,
including vehicle lifts, wheel
alignment, emissions testers
and diagnostic machines.
In response to increased
growth and demand in the
market, there is a new “Garage
Essentials” category,
featuring everyday workshop
essentials from
trolley jacks to heat
induction kits, and a
Parts page featuring a
comprehensive range
of engineering spares,
featuring tyre changers
and compressors
as well as 2 & 4 post
and scissor lift parts,
from leading brands
including Beissbarth,
Rotary, Hofmann and
Ravaglioli.
There is a “Service”
section dedicated to
customer support, including
calibration & certification,
breakdowns & repairs
and installations & maintenance,
giving garages access
to AGE’s team of in-house
engineers providing specific
expertise in each area.
The site is backed up by an
invaluable reference source
for technicians, including
equipment factsheets, DVSA
advice & support and Health
& Safety information.
Finally, there is also a
section that highlights its
project management services,
providing workshop
installation support from
its multi-disciplined teams,
from concept to completion.
John McArdle, general
manager of Autoparts Garage
Equipment, said: “The
response to the
website so far
has been overwhelmingly
positive,
with a surge
in orders particularly
across garage essentials
and engineering spares
that reflects current market
demand. Garages have expressed
to us how the benefits
of having a ‘one stop’
shop are making their businesses
much more efficient.”
Located in both Glasgow
and Wolverhampton, Autoparts
Garage Equipment
is one of the largest
suppliers of garage equipment
in the UK. The company
also provides a fully
trained, qualified and certified
FLEX FUEL HAS
THE ANSWER
JUST SHY of 40m cars
on Britain’s roads
now face stricter MOT
testing as a result of
the new changes introduced
by the DVSA earlier
this year. New diesel emission
checks will be required
to make sure vehicles meet
“plate standards”. If they fail,
the repair bill could run into
thousands of pounds, which
for some vehicles will be more
than the car is worth.
Most at risk are drivers of
any diesel car from around
2006 onwards – models that
came with a diesel particulate
filter (DPF) to clean up
its emissions. The cost of reinstating
a DPF (some drivers
and not so environmentally
conscious garages removed
DPFs altogether for performance
gains and because of
the expense of replacing) or
replacing a broken one can
often be more than the car’s
residual value.
When the DVSA set the
deadline of 20th May 2018 for
all MOT stations to upgrade
their emissions analysers to
meet the new EURO 6 emissions
standard, it created a
degree of panic on two fronts:
for drivers, the prospect of
expensive bills and for MOT
stations, are a genuine concern
as demand for new emission
analysers across Europe
is outstripping supply. But it
is not just a ‘hardware’ issue -
many testing stations are waiting
for calibration upgrades to
their existing analysers. And
calibration is not a one off,
it needs repeating every six
months.
Whilst a work around has
been agreed with the DVSA
- meaning MOT stations can
continue to carry out tests on
existing equipment so long
as they can prove they have
placed an order for replacement
equipment before the
deadline of September 2018!
Garages are duly concerned
about being compliant by law
and so now it’s imperative
that aftermarket solutions are
made available to them to ensure
MOT stations can meet
the obligations being imposed
upon them - for their own legality
but also out of service to
their customers.
Whether the September
deadline will be met and garages
will be equipped to
measure the new emission
standards remains to be seen;
but, gas analysis aside what
choices do garage owners and
consumers have to ensure vehicles
meet the new emission
standards?
What are those choices?
It is agreed by most in the
industry that carbon deposits
are responsible for multiple
engine problems; decreased
engine performance; increased
fuel consumption and
MoT emission test failures.
1 - Chemical clean: There
is a plethora of chemical
cleaning products available
to consumers and garage
owners, but they are
not without their own
environmental impact.
2 - Replace the parts, or
replace the car! Given most
cars affected by these new
changes will be from around
2006 onwards - the cost
of labour and replacement
parts might well outweigh the
residual value of the vehicle.
3- Hydrogen cleaning has
become an increasingly
attractive option for many
reasons. There are a range
of hydrogen cleaning
manufacturers - most
emanating from the far east;
others converting welding
machines to perform a
similar function. The former
suffer from low quality build
materials, and the rigidity,
integrity and longevity
required for a garage
environment. The latter, is
not specifically designed
for the job meaning the
volume of hydrogen
produced is limited
and total run time is
in the tens of hours -
again not ideal for the
demands of the UK
MOT sector.
This year, the UK welcomed
a new entrant
to the hydrogen engine
cleaning industry, FlexFuel
Energy Development
(FFED). Today, its distribution
network includes
more than 800 centers
in France, Belgium and the
United Kingdom.
FFED uses its HY-Carbon
solution - a hydrogen decarbonizing
process - to reduce
engine emissions and fuel
consumption and increase engine
performance. By injecting
hydrogen into the intake
manifold, carbon deposits are
eliminated from key engine
components responsible for
performance and emissions -
the admission valves, the EGR
valve, the turbo and the particle
filter.
An engine treated with HY-
Carbon technology reduces
Co2 and CO emissions by up
to 50%; and significantly reduces
NoX emissions by up
to 54%.
Availability
FlexFuel Units are available
now. The lease cost of the unit
is £299 per month and garages
only need to treat two
vehicles per month to cover
the cost of the lease - anything
thereafter is profit.
No consumables, no maintenance,
no labour makes
HY-Carbon one of the most
profitable machines in the
workshop with units available
within 15 days of order.
focus Exhausts 32
More than just a
pipe and silencer
The Garage’s Richard Barnett takes a look at
the exhaust system and why it’s more than just
a pipe running from the exhaust manifold to
the back bumper.
In an aftermarket of
not too long ago, the exhausts
segment was exactly
that: exhaust pipes
and silencers.
But now it has changed,
and grown, courtesy of legislation
designed to clean up a
car’s emissions as much as
possible, but without compromising
fuel economy or
performance.
Today the exhaust system
is way, way more than a pipe
running from the exhaust
manifold to the back bumper:
It now comprises lambda
sensors, particulate filters
and catalytic convertors.
But while the whole exhaust
and emissions segment has
grown, so too have earnings
opportunities, throwing the
independent garage useful
earnings potential.
Diesel- and petrol-engined
cars have their own emissions
controls systems, and
while diesel is somewhat out
of favour there are plenty of
diesel-engined cars that need
servicing and repairing.
Modern diesels might be
cleaner than their predecessors
but keeping emissions
down has led to increasingly
complicated ways of tackling
the problem, including the
use of AdBlue.
But could the drive to reduce
diesel emissions be
causing more problems than
good? Mark Blinston, commercial
director of BM Catalysts,
says selective catalyst
reduction (SCR) might not
be as good as originally imagined.
“SCR systems work by a
process of a diesel exhaust
fluid (DEF) being injected
into the exhaust system.
As exhaust gases travel between
the diesel particulate
filter and the SCR, the DEF
(most commonly ‘AdBlue’)
that has been added to the
mix works by reacting with
the base metal coating of the
catalyst, converting harmful
NOx gases into less harmful
by-products, nitrogen and
oxygen. The DEF used in this
process is comprised of urea
and deionised water, otherwise
known as a less concentrated
form of ammonia.
Whilst DEF is a non-hazardous
liquid, its gases, under
the wrong circumstances,
can be extremely harmful,”
Blinson says.
“The function of SCR
technology can only be fully
utilised under appropriate
conditions, such as the optimal
operating temperature
of around 350-450°C being
achieved, by which it can
help reduce NOx emissions
by as much as 95 percent.
“However, when placed in
conditions such as built-up
urban areas comprised of
low speeds and heavy traffic,
this isn’t always possible,
which can lead to further
complications aside from
NOx pollution. It is possible
that under such circumstances
of low efficiency, the
ammonia which is continually
injected into the system
may not be used entirely
leading to what is known as
‘ammonia slip’. This is where
excess ammonia exits the
system and is expelled into
the atmosphere, thus further
adding to pollutant levels.”
Blinston cites government
figures that suggest the
amount of ammonia in the
atmosphere increased 3.2
percent between 2015 and
2016, the time when Euro
6 was introduced, and that
SCR – designed to cut pollution
– might be creating
more.
“As SCR technology continues
to become the go-to
choice in new diesel vehicles
for its proven NOx reducing
capabilities, it begs the question
of what impact the rise
in ammonia pollution is going
to have on both us and
the environment. It is clear
that whilst positive changes
such as the steadily declining
atmospheric NOx levels are
taking shape, there are other
factors that also need to be
taken into consideration before
it’s too late,” Blinston
says.
While the exhaust system
was simply a pipe from the
33 FOCUS Exhausts
manifold to the rear of the
car, today’s set-ups are way
more complicated, involving
a multitude of sensors
working together to enable
both reduced emissions but
performance as well. Problems
can begin, though when
a fault is mis-diagnosed because
fault codes might not
be putting a sensor in the
frame but it is changed anyway,
or technicians replace
the sensor because that is
required, but without discovering
what caused the sensor
to play up.
“Sensors in general are a
growing feature of the modern
vehicle, as a multitude
of these electronic devices
are now called on to work
together to ensure the engine
is functioning to its optimum
efficiency and nowhere is this
more evident than in the area
of its exhaust control and
emission levels,” says Elta
marketing mananger Tim
Brotherton.
“In-depth analysis conducted
by our Techassist
support service indicates
that two issues regularly
arise: the first is misdiagnosis
– where fault codes do not
point directly to the sensor itself,
but it is changed anyway
– and the second, the correct
decision to replace the sensor,
but without addressing
the underlying issue that
might have caused it to fail
in the first place.
“To make things more difficult,
there are generally six
or more EGTS in the typical
exhaust system, so there
are several opportunities
for technicians to fall foul of
these potential problems.”
In the more traditional
sphere of replacement exhaust
systems, Klarius has
recently announced a list
of new products launched
in the last year. The list includes
not only exhaust systems,
but catalytic convertors
and diesel particulate
filters which, the company
says, are available with nextday
delivery.
German cars have created
a noticeable demand spike,
with exhaust mountings for
2014 VW Passats and Golf
Mk7 1.6TDis calling for replacement
systems.
When it comes to French
cars Klarius has announced
centre pipes for the Renault
Kadjar, systems for Clios of
all generations and Citroen
C3 and DS3, along with catalytic
convertors for the Peugeot
206.
Exhaust systems for Volvo
XC60 and XC90 models have
been introduced, along with
silencer boxes for the Saab
9-3.
“Klarius can help distributors
and stockists to dynamically
profile components for
models new and old, providing
equal availability for
popular and niche components
to ensure speedy deliveries
and vehicle repairs,”
the company says.
50% MONTHLY INCREASE IN MOT TESTING ANTICIPATED
THE UNITED KINGDOM sold
in excess of 2.6 million new
cars in 2016 and the aftermarket
sector is bracing
itself for an anticipated 50
per cent monthly increase in MoT
testing over the next few months
as those vehicles are due their first
MoTs.
In addition to record numbers
of new vehicles needing their first
MoT imminently; in December last
year the DVSA revealed that 32 per
cent of vehicles - nearly 1.2 million
- failed the new MoT testing standards
because of dangerous defects.
Additionally, the number of diesel
vehicles failing the new emissions
standards quadrupled from 58,004
between May 20 to 19 November
2017 to 238,871 for May to November
2018.
Diesel cars fitted with a particulate
filter (DPF) that emit visible smoke
of any colour now automatically fail
their MoT, while petrol cars that
emit blue or visible black smoke for
more than five seconds when idling
also fail. Granted, petrol vehicles
didn’t perform as badly as diesel,
but the numbers failing due to emissions
are still staggering - 292,468
in 2017 against 505,721 in 2018.
How can garage owners and
consumers address the growing
emissions problem?
There are of course a number
of solutions on the market to help
reduce the carbon build up in key
engine components that are responsible
for an increase in pollutants
being emitted.
One increasingly popular solution
to the carbon build up is hydrogen
engine cleaning. FlexFuel Energy Development,
a French headquartered
company, which entered the UK
market last year is seeing rapid take
up of its hydrogen cleaning solution
- Hy-Carbon.
Hy-Carbon reduces engine emissions
and fuel consumption and
increases engine performance. By
injecting hydrogen into the intake
manifold, carbon deposits are eliminated
from key engine components
responsible for performance and
emissions - the admission valves,
the EGR valve, the turbo and the
particle filter. Independent engine
tests post cleansing show up to 50%
less emissions; the return of engine
power and reduced fuel consumption.
Is hydrogen cleaning just for
older vehicles?
Hy-Carbon will also have a large
impact on relatively new, low mileage
vehicles. An independent report
conducted by UTAC, the official automotive
testing lab for the French
Government, and certified by the
European Union, a 2018 Volkswagen
MkVII Golf with 10,000 km on
the clock saw a significant reduction
in harmful emissions.
FlexFuel now has around 50 outlets
offering hydrogen engine cleaning
across the UK, and demand is
increasing.
What do the garages say?
One recent customer, Offmore
Road Garage, has treated in excess
of 30 of its regular customers vehicles
with Hy-Carbon and increased
its turnover over previous months
by at least 10 per cent. Customers
are publicly acknowledging the
difference the treatment has made
in terms of engine responsiveness,
quieter engines and significantly improved
fuel economy.
One customer, David Hill comments:
“I drive my Audi A5 diesel
on a regular round trip to Liverpool
– about 212 miles. My economy was
around 53-54 mpg. Offmore Road
Garage suggested a HY-Carbon treatment
given the age of my vehicle and
it having done 140,000 miles. Following
the HY-Carbon treatment, on
the same round journey to Liverpool
I returned with figures of 63mpg –
an 8.5% improvement. Genuinely, I
was surprised at the improvement
not only to my fuel economy, but the
engine feels more responsive and is
less noisy.”
focus Batteries 34
it’s a hard
knock life
. . . for batteries
Batteries have got to be robust and hardy to cope
with the demands from a car, The Garage’s Richard
Barnett looks at just how hard their life can be.
The power behind
so much of a car’s
functions is the battery,
but its role
has become more
important as electronics
had played an increasingly
large role in how that car
performs, whether it’s supplying
power to the engine
management system or the
electronic power steering, or
keeping the entertainment
systems running as they
should.
The battery’s life is a tough
one, and motorists (and,
let’s face it, workshops) only
get into battery mode when
one needs replacing.
All too often workshops
bodyswerve the idea of a
battery health check, and
for no apparent reason other
than laziness, yet motorists,
whose desire to be left
stranded is even less than it
used to be, would surely be
grateful to know their car’s
battery is on its last legs and
that the right course of action
would be to replace it.
According to Banner Batteries,
product technology
is unsurprisingly) being
driven by environmental
concerns just as much as
the car’s power demands,
be that greater comfort and
convenience, or a reduction
in emissions as well as improved
fuel economy. From
the latter car makers continue
to introduce more hybrid
vehicles and with that has
come a change in the make
of the car battery aftermarket.
“In essence vehicles can
now be categorized into being
micro hybrid, mild hybrid
and full hybrid,” Banner
says.
As car battery demands
have changed, batteries
have evolved and today absorbed
glass mat (AGM)
and enhanced flooded battery
(EFB) types don’t hold
the mystery they did several
years ago. That means
storage, handling and fitting
needs to be approached differently
– AGM batteries,
for example, will recharge
completely in three hours, a
result of having a large plate
surface and low internal resistance,
but that charging
means using a smart or intelligent
charger – a constant
current charger must never
be used, Banner advises.
With the rise of AGM and
EFB types, the need to fit exactly
the right replacement
– and not a loose approxi-
mation – becomes more
important than ever. If the
wrong type is fitted it will
have a shorter than intended
life but, equally importantly,
the workshop could damage
its reputation by not supplying
the correct type. And
when those batteries are
replaced the active energy
management system should
be re-set because an old battery
has different charging
from a new one.
With more and more electrical
demands placed on a
car’s battery (including stop/
start systems) the need to fit
the correct-specification battery
is more important than
ever and, as Yuasa points
out, it’s no longer a quick ‘fit
and forget’ task, and instead
becomes time-consuming.
In some cases there’s the
quandary of finding the battery
and once found can take
some time to fit – in the Audi
Q5’s case, up to 90 minutes,
Yuasa says.
Using the Yuasa look-up
facility workshops can be
sure they are fitting a battery
of the correct specification
via fit.yausa.com. Putting in
the car’s registration number
or VIN will show which
type should be fitted, along
with fitting instructions, battery
location and estimated
fitting time.
The rise of the stop/start
system has brought its own
problems to the aftermarket,
especially because only
batteries designed specifically
for that purpose should
34, 35, 36 Batteries.indd 1 04/02/2019 10:53

35 FOCUS Batteries
be fitted, and when that battery
is replaced, the battery
management system should
be re-set.
Good news for the aftermarket
comes from cars
without stop/start systems,
because in this case there is
always the possibility of selling
an upgrade. Yuasa says
it’s important for workshop
staff to ask the customer
what sort of driving they do,
and roughly how many miles
they cover every year – for
those doing shorter (under
20 minutes) journeys a higher-specification
replacement
is advised, Yuasa says.
But while traffic is getting
heavier and journeys
shorter, just how much call
is there for cars with stop/
start systems? According
to Hella 90 percent of cars
built now have the feature.
And for those cars that have
the system over-ride feature,
the number of drivers activating
it has reduced as they
becoming more accepting of
the green-principled technology.
To extend the battery life
of cars with a stop/start system
requires a form of monitoring,
and Hella’s Intelligent
Battery Sensor gives precise
measurements of current,
voltage and battery temperacontinued
ture to ensure the cars electrical
system is functioning
at its most efficient levels.
“At the heart of a start/
stop system is an absorbed
glass mat (AGM) battery.
Developed to cope with the
increased demands of these
systems, an AGM battery
can be called upon to make
350,000 engine starts during
its service life, as opposed to
just 30,000 for a traditional
SLI (starter/lighting/ignition)
battery. For less demanding,
‘entry-level’ start/stop applications,
enhanced flooded
batteries (EFB) have been
developed as a more cost-effective
solution,” Hella says.
“However, without an
IBS unit, even these batteries
would fail. It is only
through this device and via
the vehicle’s battery management
system, that they can
be regulated to provide the
necessary power to restart
the engine, while minimising
their demand on the alternator,
which is how these
start/stop systems both reduce
fuel consumption and
harmful exhaust emissions.”
The
market
now and
in the
future
DESPITE THE technology employed in
modern batteries they still have a finite
service life, which means demand is strong
but more complicated than it used to be.
“We had a very successful year for
battery sales, with more than one million
automotive batteries sold for the fourth
consecutive year,” says Euro Car Parts
marketing director Helen Robinson.
“Key to this has been significant
investment in training, to empower our
branches to be able to advise repairers on
battery products and source the right parts
instantly. We also offer the largest range of
replacement battery products in the UK,
with off the-shelf availability of products
from Bosch, VARTA, Exide, Lion and more.”
Changes in battery make-up will continue,
and as the car parc becomes more
complex, so do the batteries those cars
are fitted with. Says Robinson: “As more
AGM and EFB batteries are developed, we
work closely with leading manufacturers
to ensure we continue to provide an
unparalleled supply to repairers. If a battery
is not available in branch, our nationwide
Prior to joining Scania, Simon
worked for John Lewis
Partnership, spending 11
years in Engineering and five
years as Head of Fleet Engineering
with the award-winning
transport team which
pioneered the large-scale
use of dedicated gas-fuelled
trucks in the UK.
“Simon’s appointment
brings a wealth of experience
to our team,” says
Kevin Lanksford, Scania’s
National Fleet and Specialist
Sales Director. “Sustainable
transport operation is a
particular focus area for our
municipal customers, and
Garage management specialist appoints
‘New Business Development Manager’
Simon’s knowledge of operating
quiet, clean vehicles on
a renewable fuel source is
virtually unparalleled within
our industry. Scania offers
the widest range of alternative
fuels on the market
today, and the specialist vehicle
aspect of Simon’s role
Garage TechMan, the garage
management specialist,
has appointed Gavin Sparks
to the newly-created role of
New Business Development
Manager to help further develop
the company’s profile
within the automotive aftermarket.
Gavin joins the company after
spending 16 years as Senior
Sales Manager with MAM
Software, but was drawn to
the opportunities presented
by both the speed of development
and the sophisticated
functionality at TechMan.
The pace of progress taking
place within the company
means that TechMan is constantly
bolstering its offering
with new, innovative solutions
which help to streamline
overall efficiency in workshops
all over the UK.
Leo Freebairn, National
Sales Manager at TechMan
commented: “Gavin is a high
profile appointment for us,
with a great industry reputation.
“He’s armed with all the
tools needed to help the business
develop existing relationships
with the UK’s major
garage networks, national
chains and parts suppliers
in order to further establish
TechMan in the marketplace.”
Gavin’s extensive industry
experience means that he is
well-placed to oversee Tech-
Man’s commercial development.
He joins at an exciting
time for the business, as
the reputation of the system
amongst leading independent
garages and the number of
customers continues to grow
rapidly.
TechMan is supported by an
established full-time team of
UK-based developers. There’s
also in-house training and
customer support capability
from staff with first-hand independent
garage experience.
will involve the introduction
of power sources such as hybrid
and plug-in hybrid into
municipal applications.
“As such, his appointment
represents a key step in our
work to drive the shift to
more sustainable transport
solutions. On behalf of the
entire Scania team, I wish
Simon every success in his
career with us.”
Simon Gray’s entire working
life has been spent in
transport. Prior to John
Lewis Partnership, he spent
ten years working for Royal
Mail on the service side of
its business. “I started my
career in transport with
Royal Mail and feel privileged
to have been part of a
major change programme
at John Lewis Partnership,”
comments Simon. “I now
look forward to sharing the
knowledge I have gained over
the years with Scania’s customers.
The sustainability
challenges our industry faces
today are hugely significant
and I very much look forward
to helping introduce Scania’s
innovative and proven technologies
into the municipal
marketplace.”
