Suspected drink drivers<br />

drink drivers were<br />

Diamond <strong>Harbour</strong><br />

Facebook page.<br />

4x4 vehicles being driven<br />

up the rock wall at the<br />

Diamond <strong>Harbour</strong> wharf<br />

car park.<br />

Her children believed<br />

the drivers were drunk.<br />

Mrs Heaton-Caffin told<br />

she did not think she had<br />

enough evidence to report<br />

the incident to the police.<br />

But Sergeant Lovrich<br />

said people should<br />

report this kind of<br />

incident to police<br />

so they could be<br />

the best judge.<br />

“That’s the frustrating<br />

thing, people<br />

see something<br />

and they start gossiping<br />

about it on<br />

Facebook instead<br />

of reporting it to us. By<br />

reporting directly to us we<br />

can get an accurate judgement<br />

of offences as they<br />

occur and from there we<br />

can prioritise resources,”<br />

he said.<br />

Mrs Heaton-Caffin said<br />

she posted about the incident<br />

on Facebook to see if<br />

anyone else saw anything.<br />

“My children told me<br />

they were driving their<br />

cars right up against<br />

the side of the car park<br />

which made the rocks fall<br />

down on to the car park.<br />

They said both kids were<br />

drunk,” she said.<br />

Another resident said<br />

on the Facebook page they<br />

saw the suspected drink<br />

drivers leaving the car<br />

park in “an awful manner.”<br />

Sergeant Lovrich refused<br />

to comment on speculation<br />

made over social<br />

media but condemned<br />

drink driving as a serious<br />

offence.<br />

“If you are going to<br />

drink find a sober driver<br />

to get you home.”<br />

Call for end to double cruise ship days<br />

AKAROA residents are<br />

calling for an end to<br />

double cruise ship days<br />

after 6568 cruise ship<br />

passengers and staff<br />

docked in the town last<br />

Thursday.<br />

This was the largest<br />

cruise ship day since the<br />

start of December when<br />

7060 people arrived.<br />

Akaroa also had to<br />

accommodate 4312 cruise<br />

ship passengers and staff<br />

on Monday when they had<br />

a triple cruise ship day.<br />

Akaroa Civic Trust<br />

secretary Rosie Davidson<br />

said the town was bursting<br />

at the seams during the<br />

recent double cruise ship<br />

visit.<br />

“When you have a<br />

population of 640 people<br />

and you have a good 6000<br />

people landing on your<br />

doorstep it is just chaos,”<br />

she said.<br />

Mrs Davidson said<br />

Beach Rd was congested<br />

with tour buses and the<br />

wharf was “heaving with<br />

humanity.”<br />

One local business<br />

owner who wished to remain<br />

anonymous told the<br />

passengers and staff visited Akaroa last Thursday.<br />

private toilets.<br />

“This Australian passenger<br />

had used our toilet in<br />

spite of me telling him to<br />

use the public bathrooms<br />

across the road and had<br />

left mud all throughout<br />

the bathroom.”<br />

Banks Peninsula<br />

councillor Andrew Turner<br />

said discussions were<br />

ongoing to reduce double<br />

cruise ship visits in future<br />

seasons.<br />

“My understanding<br />

from relevant management<br />

at Christchurch NZ<br />

is that progress has been<br />

made in reducing double<br />

cruise ship days in the<br />

future.”<br />

Cr Turner said<br />

Akaroa did not have the<br />

infrastructure to cope<br />

with 6568 cruise ship<br />

passengers and staff at a<br />

time.<br />

“They [double cruise<br />

ship days] don’t work for<br />

the passengers, they don’t<br />

work for the businesses<br />

and they don’t work for<br />

the community, they are<br />

just not an ideal situation.”<br />
