Stop the Thief
Over the last few months news
reports have highlighted the
risks of stealing keyless cars.
Thieves have used technology
to bypass entry systems on
these cars for many years, but
manufacturers continue to
develop keyless cars. Although
most cars are affected Which?
highlighted Ford, Volkswagen
and Nissan models at most risk.
While the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders
believe new cars are more
secure than ever, cheap
electronic technology used to
steal cars can be bought on line.
The fob just needs to be within
a certain distance of the car for
the thief to trick, unlock and start
the car. It can take less than 60
seconds and for safety reasons
the car won’t cut out when the
key is out of range.
Take action
• Lock the car and keep your keys
away from door and windows.
• Keep the key in a metal tin to
block signals
• Find out if you can switch the
key’s signal off.
