Greetings everybody! This week we are going to look
at yet another one of those tiny “LBJ” birds . . . Little
Brown Jobs, for those not in the know . . . or, in
Afrikaans, VVV . . . Vreeslike Vaal Voëls . . . the
wing-snapping Cisticola.
This is one of those birds that is far more easily
heard than seen, even though they are not prone to
hiding or skulking. Why? I’ll explain shortly... The

grasslands of our area.
As mentioned, it is small and on the duller side of
things colour-wise. In many ways it looks a lot like its
cousin, the cloud Cisticola, and where the two
species overlap, confusion can occur. The underparts
are a pale tawny colour, with the back being heavily
streaked with black and dark brown, darker than that
of the cloud Cisticola. The male has a rufous crown,
whereas the female’s crown is more streaked. They
also often have a very dark spot on the lores (the
space in front of the eyes), whereas the lores of the
cloud cousin lack the black spot, or have a grey spot
at best.
The display flight consists of the bird flying ever so
high up in the air, as they utter a “see-see-see” call.
For such a tiny bird to fly so high in the air makes it
very difficult to pick up by sight, hence my comment
earlier about it being more easily heard than seen.
After a few minutes of “see-see-seeing” the territory
below, it makes a dive for the ground, making very
audible wing snaps and rattles. On occasion I have
seen them calling from a perch, but not often. You
