LOOKING FIT: Jerome Boulle looked fresh at the
start of the Port Alfred parkrun on Saturday
KOWIE
STRIDERS
... runners with pride
The Bay Ultra was held
this past weekend in Port
Elizabeth. Sticks and
Marianne Stiglingh
competed in the 21km
event in hot humid
conditions. Marianne
finished in good time of
2 hours 5 minutes and
looked quite comfortable.
Well done to Sticks on a
great time of 1:38 to
finish 3rd in his age
group.
Our weekly Tuesday
time trial is getting
bigger each week. We
had just short of 60
runners and walkers last
week sweating it out to
achieve better times.
Welcome to all the
newcomers. Really great
to see you all.
Billy’s TIPS
Peaking is a deliberate
decision to sharpen and
rest – it does not happen
intentionally. Peaking
sometimes happens
accidently when illness,
injury or weather forces
you to rest from training.
L ADIES’ R E S U LTS
February 5: For a change perfect weather
pervaded the RPAGC course on Tuesday
afternoon and 33 players answered the call
to play the monthly Medal sponsored by Pick
n Pay.
Yvonne Hill won the Silver Division shooting
a nett 66, with runner-up Kim Gardner
counting out Mo Marsay for second place on
nett 69.
Heather van Harmelen once again found her
game coming together as she won the
Bronze Division on nett 74, narrowly pipping
runner-up Edith Knepper and also Joy Altson,
both on nett 75.
Sylvia Foster’s drive was closest to the pin on
Top Carpets’ sixth, as was Sonia Reynold’s on
Rosehill Driving Range’s eighth and Trish
Barwick’s on Wimpy’s 11th. Sonia Reynold’s
ball was nearest-for two on River Spa’s 13th.
Sonia Reynolds holed the only par three
birdie of the afternoon (eighth).
The longest drive competitions were held on
the 14th and struck by Trish Barwick and Ushi
Reneke in the lower and higher handicap
sections respectively.
The concomitant putting competitions held
on Medal day were won by Andrea Keys (27
putts) and by Launa Kirk in the Bronze
Division (31 putts)
The competition on February 19 will be an
Individual Stableford with the PA High school
Shield at stake.
PORT ALFRED MIXED
February 9: Saturday morning proved to be
hot and humid with little breeze to moderate
conditions yet 34 players turned out to play
the weekly mixed competition drawn into two
3-balls and seven four-balls in a two-to-count
Stableford Alliance.
Derek Sinclair shot 79 to nett 64 and lead his
covey of Steve Kennedy, Lynn West and Glyn
Renecle to victory with 92 points. They were
just one point to the fore of runner-up visiting
family Henri, Richard, Danie and Dan Merkel.
The longest walk and most golf was played
by Elfi Krummery, Liz Mangham and James
Weisters who just managed to card 71+5= 76
points.
Jude Lello celebrated her return to Port
Alfred by holing two clubs on the par three
8th and the 13th. Sue Kennedy birdied the
8th with Mo Marsay doing likewise on the
11th.
Henri Merkel shot a great 75 to nett 67. Other
good nett scores were recorded by Richard
Merkel, Sue Kennedy(68), Fanie Smit, Prue
Peacock (69), Chris Smuts, Steve Kennedy
and Launa Kirk (70).
Jude Lello won the bottle of wine on offer for
being closest to the pin on the par three 8th.
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday February 5: Once in a while, Port
Alfred enjoys perfect weather: warm and
sunny with light cooling zephyrs to ensure
everyone is comfortable. Such was Tuesday
morning and 49 players heeded the call to
attend KGB’s two-to-count Stableford alliance
after being drawn into 10 four-balls and three
three-balls.
Recent much needed rains have brought a
CHAMPION RUNNER: Loosening the cobwebs at
the Port Alfred parkrun, former Comrades
champion Alan Robb strode out strongly on
Saturday morning
degree of greenness back to the course as
grass once more begins to grow. This
“lengthens” the course considerably and
scores were lower than might be expected,
especially after the hard billiard table
conditions of the fairways during the recent
drought.
Nevertheless winners John Abbot, John
Crandon, Phillip van der Byl and Gavin
Richards carded an exemplary 88 points to
sweep all opposition aside. Second place
went to Neil Loundar, Bob Shaw, Peter Reed
and Andy Manson with 86 points.
Way behind were Hamer en Sukkel recipients
Brian Shirley, Dale Wisener and Barrie B
Brady who collectively found the going tough
and record just 69+5 =74 points.
Andy Manson alone holed out a two-club
(eighth) and not surprisingly there were no
individual rounds of note.
Friday February 8: Friday morning saw a
record turnout of players for the ever
increasing in popularity KGB two-to-count
Stableford alliance. This was despite hot,
humid conditions with ever increasing in
intensity westerly winds. The field of 58 was
drawn into two three-balls and 13 four-balls.
Neil Loundar along with wife Theresa plus
John Crandon and Len Bohnen carded a
creditable 90 points to win the competition.
Gavin Richards, John Abbot, Colin Armstrong
and Peter Reed were a close behind
runners-up team on 89 points.
The team of Danny and Gaby Tarpani playing
with Uwe and Vera Blunk battled the steamy
conditions to put just 78 points on their card,
the consequence of which was to be awarded
the notorious Hamer en Sukkel trophy at the
19th hole.
There were a number of two-clubs on the par
threes: Andy Stembridge, John Muggeridge,
and Theresa Loundar on the eighth and Gavin
Richards on the 11th.
The best nett rounds were shot by Heather
van Harmelen (66), Gerald Churchley, Gavin
Richards (68), Adrian White, John Crandon,
Neil Loundar, John Muggeridge, Steve Daly
(69) and Adrian Reid (70).
