finished in good time of<br />

2 hours 5 minutes and<br />

looked quite comfortable.<br />

L ADIES’ R E S U LTS<br />

<strong>February</strong> 5: For a change perfect weather<br />

pervaded the RPAGC course on Tuesday<br />

afternoon and 33 players answered the call<br />

to play the monthly Medal sponsored by Pick<br />

n Pay.<br />

Yvonne Hill won the Silver Division shooting<br />

a nett 66, with runner-up Kim Gardner<br />

counting out Mo Marsay for second place on<br />

nett 69.<br />

Heather van Harmelen once again found her<br />

game coming together as she won the<br />

Bronze Division on nett 74, narrowly pipping<br />

runner-up Edith Knepper and also Joy Altson,<br />

both on nett 75.<br />

Sylvia Foster’s drive was closest to the pin on<br />

Top Carpets’ sixth, as was Sonia Reynold’s on<br />

Rosehill Driving Range’s eighth and Trish<br />

Barwick’s on Wimpy’s 11th. Sonia Reynold’s<br />

ball was nearest-for two on River Spa’s 13th.<br />

Sonia Reynolds holed the only par three<br />

birdie of the afternoon (eighth).<br />

The longest drive competitions were held on<br />

the <strong>14</strong>th and struck by Trish Barwick and Ushi<br />

Reneke in the lower and higher handicap<br />

sections respectively.<br />

The concomitant putting competitions held<br />

on Medal day were won by Andrea Keys (27<br />

putts) and by Launa Kirk in the Bronze<br />

Division (31 putts)<br />

The competition on <strong>February</strong> 19 will be an<br />

Individual Stableford with the PA High school<br />

Shield at stake.<br />

PORT ALFRED MIXED<br />

<strong>February</strong> 9: Saturday morning proved to be<br />

hot and humid with little breeze to moderate<br />

conditions yet 34 players turned out to play<br />

the weekly mixed competition drawn into two<br />

3-balls and seven four-balls in a two-to-count<br />

Stableford Alliance.<br />

Derek Sinclair shot 79 to nett 64 and lead his<br />

covey of Steve Kennedy, Lynn West and Glyn<br />

Renecle to victory with 92 points. They were<br />

just one point to the fore of runner-up visiting<br />

family Henri, Richard, Danie and Dan Merkel.<br />

The longest walk and most golf was played<br />

by Elfi Krummery, Liz Mangham and James<br />

Weisters who just managed to card 71+5= 76<br />

points.<br />

Jude Lello celebrated her return to Port<br />

Alfred by holing two clubs on the par three<br />

8th and the 13th. Sue Kennedy birdied the<br />

8th with Mo Marsay doing likewise on the<br />

11th.<br />

Henri Merkel shot a great 75 to nett 67. Other<br />

good nett scores were recorded by Richard<br />

Merkel, Sue Kennedy(68), Fanie Smit, Prue<br />

Peacock (69), Chris Smuts, Steve Kennedy<br />

and Launa Kirk (70).<br />

Jude Lello won the bottle of wine on offer for<br />

being closest to the pin on the par three 8th.<br />

KGB RESULTS<br />

Tuesday <strong>February</strong> 5: Once in a while, Port<br />

Alfred enjoys perfect weather: warm and<br />

sunny with light cooling zephyrs to ensure<br />

everyone is comfortable. Such was Tuesday<br />

morning and 49 players heeded the call to<br />

attend KGB’s two-to-count Stableford alliance<br />

after being drawn into 10 four-balls and three<br />

three-balls.<br />

Recent much needed rains have brought a<br />

CHAMPION RUNNER: Loosening the cobwebs at<br />

the Port Alfred parkrun, former Comrades<br />

champion Alan Robb strode out strongly on<br />

degree of greenness back to the course as<br />

grass once more begins to grow. This<br />

“lengthens” the course considerably and<br />

scores were lower than might be expected,<br />

especially after the hard billiard table<br />

conditions of the fairways during the recent<br />

drought.<br />

Nevertheless winners John Abbot, John<br />

Crandon, Phillip van der Byl and Gavin<br />

Richards carded an exemplary 88 points to<br />

sweep all opposition aside. Second place<br />

went to Neil Loundar, Bob Shaw, Peter Reed<br />

and Andy Manson with 86 points.<br />

Way behind were Hamer en Sukkel recipients<br />

Brian Shirley, Dale Wisener and Barrie B<br />

Brady who collectively found the going tough<br />

and record just 69+5 =74 points.<br />

Andy Manson alone holed out a two-club<br />

(eighth) and not surprisingly there were no<br />

individual rounds of note.<br />

Friday <strong>February</strong> 8: Friday morning saw a<br />

record turnout of players for the ever<br />

increasing in popularity KGB two-to-count<br />

Stableford alliance. This was despite hot,<br />

humid conditions with ever increasing in<br />

intensity westerly winds. The field of 58 was<br />

drawn into two three-balls and 13 four-balls.<br />

Neil Loundar along with wife Theresa plus<br />

John Crandon and Len Bohnen carded a<br />

creditable 90 points to win the competition.<br />

Gavin Richards, John Abbot, Colin Armstrong<br />

and Peter Reed were a close behind<br />

runners-up team on 89 points.<br />

The team of Danny and Gaby Tarpani playing<br />

with Uwe and Vera Blunk battled the steamy<br />

conditions to put just 78 points on their card,<br />

the consequence of which was to be awarded<br />

the notorious Hamer en Sukkel trophy at the<br />

19th hole.<br />

There were a number of two-clubs on the par<br />

threes: Andy Stembridge, John Muggeridge,<br />

and Theresa Loundar on the eighth and Gavin<br />

Richards on the 11th.<br />

The best nett rounds were shot by Heather<br />

van Harmelen (66), Gerald Churchley, Gavin<br />

Richards (68), Adrian White, John Crandon,<br />

Neil Loundar, John Muggeridge, Steve Daly<br />

(69) and Adrian Reid (70).<br />
