WITH ENGAGING STORYTELLING AND PHYSICAL DEXTERITY, VAMOS THEATRE BRINGS ITS
WORDLESS FULL MASK STYLE TO A STORY WHICH NEEDS TO BE TOLD, WITH SEVERAL MIDLANDS
DATES INCLUDING A SHOW AT THE LICHFIELD GARRICK THIS MONTH. AMY NORBURY CHATS
TO DIRECTOR RACHAEL SAVAGE AHEAD OF THE TOUR
VAMOS THEATRE
TACKLES MILITARY PTS
IN ITS LATEST SHOW
In 2012, more British soldiers and veterans took
their own lives that were lost on the battlefield in
Afghanistan. And since then, suicide rates have
continued to rise.
It’s a damning indictment about the strains of
military life - and particularly the difficulties faced
by ex-military as they adjust to being a civilian once
again.
“And I don’t think the true statistics are really
known,” says Rachael Savage, founder and director
of Vamos Theatre. “When you’re a veteran and
you leave the military, you often don’t want to
be associated with it and so you often don’t give
information that you’re a veteran.
“You’ve also been trained never to surrender, never
to ask for help, to constantly fight and not flight,
and when you leave the military that’s still utterly
engrained.
“Not all soldiers come back mentally scarred. Many
say their military years were the best years of their
lives and enjoy a smooth transition back to civilian
life. I’ve also heard stories of how exciting life in
the military can be. Stories telling of the adventure,
adrenalin rush, optimism, thrill. And yet thousands
have suffered mentally - as so did their forebears
from earlier wars - and continue to battle when they
return back home. They may return physically whole
but often emotionally shattered.
“The military give you the most gruelling training to
become a soldier but they don’t give you any training
to become a civilian again. That’s where I think the
statistics are warped, with the amount of people
coming back with mental health problems which
need support. The true story is probably much more
bleak.”
And it is this issue of Post-Traumatic Stress in
A BRAVE FACE’S RYAN
military and ex-military personnel which has
provided the inspiration for Vamos Theatre’s latest
show, A Brave Face, which has just started a tour
of the UK and Germany and which comes to the
Lichfield Garrick on March 30, one of several dates
in the Midlands.
A Brave Face tells the story of young soldier Ryan. In
Afghanistan, in 2009, under bright blue skies, a small
girl stands and watches the soldier. She smiles, just
like his sister…
Ryan is there to see the world, learn a trade, get a
life. Training is complete, combat is a buzz; he’s part
of a team, and knows his job. But on one particular
hot and desperate tour of duty, Ryan sees things
he can’t talk about, to anyone. And then, when he
returns home, the trouble really begins.
Vamos Theatre was set up by Rachael in 2006
as a full mask theatre company, meaning their
shows include no dialogue and the actors’ faces are
completely covered by masks. Based in Worcester, the
company tours all over the world playing at a huge
range of venues, from major theatres to care homes
and hospital wards, depending on the subject matter
of the show at hand.
“We tell stories that need to be told, and we tell
stories about people who often don’t have a voice - so
we give them a voice,” explains Rachael.
“I always have a really close emotional attachment to
the subject matter we make shows about, because it’s
got to be something I care about.”
Other Vamos shows have focused on topics including
dementia and forced adoption in the 1960s, while the
next show tackles end-of-life care. But it is A Brave
Face which is currently the centre of Rachael’s focus.
“This show I went on a real journey with, because
I didn’t think I cared about the military and I
didn’t think I was interested in the military; it’s not
something that us civilians tend to get caught up in,”
explains Rachael.
But, as it turns out, it was a subject matter
that Rachael did care about. Hugely.
“It wasn’t until I started doing the research
that I became more and more involved, and I
thought it was such an important story which
needed to be told,” she explains.
“It started with Danny Fitzsimons, a former
soldier whose parents found him hiding in a
wheelie bin in the early hours of the morning.
That just made me ask questions; why did
he think the safest place for him to be was
in a wheelie bin, and how would that make
parents feel, to find their boy like that?”
Rachael’s research led her to journalist
Matthew Green’s book, Aftershock, which
documents the stories of British military veterans
and their families seeking new ways to heal from
the trauma of war. Over the last two decades, the
UK has sent thousands of people to fight on our
behalf. But what happens when these soldiers come
back home, having lost their friends and killed their
enemies, having seen and done things that have no
place in civilian life?
“The story turned to a young man called Aron Black,
who tragically took his own life after witnessing the
death of his best mate,” says Rachael.
“I had a real transition, going from
thinking I wasn’t interested in making a
show about the military, to being really
passionate about making a show about
the military.”
Created from two years of research
with ex and serving soldiers, families
and health professionals, A Brave Face
explores Post-Traumatic Stress, an unseen
and often unrecognised injury of war,
and the impact it can have on even the
closest of families. With compassion
and fearlessness, Vamos brings its this
important story to life in its trademark,
wordless, full mask style.
“It’s a long and often painful process,” says Rachael.
“The research isn’t easy, but what drives me is my
passion for making sure these stories are told.
“A Brave Face was based on lots of different people’s
stories; the list of military, ex-military, wives and
partners, parents and health professionals who have
contributed to the show is endless.”
One such contributor is army veteran Ray Anderton,
who has acted as a consultant throughout the
development of A Brave Face, even going as far as
to sit in on rehearsals now the start of the tour is
imminent.
“I was lucky enough to meet Ray a couple of years
A BRAVE FACE COMES
TO THE LICHFIELD
GARRICK THIS MONTH
THE SHOW IS ‘A STORY
WHICH NEEDS TO BE
TOLD’ SAYS RACHAEL
ago and he really has guided me every step of the
way; he’s been a real driving force who has helped to
mould the story of Ryan,” says Rachael.
“And to have him in rehearsals is amazing; he makes
sure we get everything just right. It would be too
easy for someone from the military to come to the
show and pick fault with the tiny details which then
takes away from the real value of the piece, so having
Ray on board to make sure the details are spot on is
fantastic.”
A long time advocate of masked theatre, Rachael
believes it is the perfect medium for her hard-hitting
and emotional brand of storytelling.
“Because of the stories I want to tell, the genre of
full mask theatre really suits it,” explains Rachael.
“As an audience member you have to engage so fully
and meet the actor halfway. For me, full mask theatre
is brilliant because it makes people feel. There’s a
much deeper level of empathy, and in making people
feel, you can make them think.
“Working without words creates a personal kind
of communication, in which difficult issues can be
more easily approached. Because the words aren’t
there, each audience member creates their own
story internally and in encourages a real emotional
connection with the characters.”
A Brave Face features renowned mask actor
James Greaves as Ryan, as well as physical theatre
actors João Ricardo Aguiar, Joshua Patel, Sophia
Knox-Miller and Tessa Gaukroger. And the masks
themselves are as much stars of the show as the
actors who wear them.
“I write the story, I write the characters and give
a character outline, and then Russell Dean from
Strange Face Theatre Company makes the masks,”
says Rachael.
“Then when the actors put them on, the masks really
come to life. Sometimes we find some masks don’t
suit some actors so we have to change them around,
or that Russell’s interpretation has been different to
mine so a mask might sit on the shelf for a bit before
we find a role for it.
“This mask of Ryan had a really tiny role in a
previous show, The Best Thing, but it was a mask
that I loved so much it got the main role in this show.
The masks really can take on a life of their own.”
And while it might seem the lack of both dialogue
and ability to express yourself facially might provide
a challenge for the actors, Rachael says that’s
definitely not the case.
“Actually you have both,” she explains. “When
you’re behind the mask you pull all of the facial
expressions, and often when you perform in a mask,
when you take it off your face hurts because of all of
the expressions you pull.
“There’s also a script so you also have an internal
monologue, or if there are two people on stage an
internal dialogue. We often rehearse without masks
on so we absolutely know the economy of words,
economy of movement, the changes of pace, angles
of the masks, and it’s the actors’ job to make their
internal monologue end up in the audience’s brain.
That’s the incredible link between a masked actor
and the audience.”
Inspiring original music, clever projections and
innovative design with lighting and costumes all help
to add to the fully immersive experience that is a
Vamos Theatre production.
Rachael is hoping A Brave Face will appeal to
civilians and veteran alikes and understands
that, with the subject matter at hand, audience
members who are veterans or living with military
Post-Traumatic Stress might find certain scenes
distressing. With this in mind, the company is
encouraging venues to put on Chilled Performances,
which have slight adjustments made to reduce the
possibility of triggers and provide additional support
for those who could be affected by the show.
“With A Brave Face, I want to raise awareness within
civilian society of something I was so ignorant and
naive and blasé about,” says Rachael. “And now, I
have as much respect for military as I do for doctors,
nurses, firefighters and the police.”
“As civilians, we can never know what military life is
like, and we don’t want to. We just want to sleep well
in our beds at night and we don’t worry about other
people having to follow orders and carry out actions
that they may not agree with, and living with the
guilt and shame and those traumas that are built up,
when they’re just doing their jobs.”
NEO Mint is going to be big news in 2020 according
to trend forecasting company WGSN, and we will
begin to see it trickling through in 2019. 2020 ‘sounds’
ultramodern - we thought we would have flying cars
and robots by 2020, and with AI, drones and automatic
cars, we aren’t far off. So it is no surprise this cool-toned
colour has a futuristic, technological and scientific
feel. Yet is is also fused with the green to represent
oxygenating nature and plant life.
WGSN Colour Director, Jane Monnington Boddy
says that, “Neo Mint is a shade that succinctly aligns
futuristic development with nature,” and this green
is calming and yet holds the promise of something
exciting, optimistic and new.
Neo Mint brings a breath of fresh air into interiors.
Think statement walls, bold geometric designs and
subtle accents. And you can go as bold or as soft with
it as you like - this versatile shade is definitely one to
watch.
Textural
healing
IF you want to give a scheme some ‘wow’ factor, look no
further than texture. Layering a mixture of soft fabrics -
from fluffy sheepskin cushions and chunky wool throws
to cowhide rugs - will not only draw the eye, which is
essential in a muted scheme decorated in neutrals that
could otherwise look bland, but also add cosiness.
Adding texture is all about layering, so have a few
key pieces, like a statement rug, a velvet chair, or a
leather sofa, and then add smaller accessories and soft
furnishings until the room feels complete. That way, you
can go as over-the-top or pared back as you feel, and it’s
a look which can evolve with ease.
Don’t forget that your scheme need never be ‘set
in stone’. Moving or replacing a few texture-rich
accessories is an easy way to re-energise and refresh the
whole balance of a scheme.
Designs on style
WITH MID-CENTURY DESIGN MAKING ITS MARK AS ONE OF THE MOST
PROMINENT FURNITURE TRENDS OF THE PAST DECADE, AMY NORBURY
CHATS TO EXPERT TOM WINTERTON ABOUT ITS APPEAL
You don’t need to be an interiors expert
to be familiar with mid-century modern
design. Its signature clean lines and
minimal details can be spotted from a
mile away, and it’s been the dominant
furniture trend of the past few years.
But with the saturation of mid-century
modern pieces - both original and the
much-mimicked reproduction styles -
reaching fever pitch, is the bubble about
to burst?
Perhaps, says furniture expert Tom
Winterton, although he believes there’s
still plenty of life in the trend before the
next big thing comes our way.
“I think it’s certainly reached a peak,”
says 26-year-old Tom, who oversees
the furniture department at Richard Winterton
Auctioneers in Lichfield. “It’s been such a huge trend
but give it another few years and I think we’ll see it
being taken over by something else.
“Mid-century furniture has been on the rise for the
past decade. Most of us were oblivious to what was
happening back at the start. Some dealers were
ahead of the game and bought these pieces for
peanuts compared to what they are fetching now;
you can’t pick up a sideboard at auction for less than
£300 nowadays.
“Definitely 60s and 70s furniture is selling well,
particularly well-known designer names like John and
Sylvia Reid or Hille. And a lot of pieces are being
snapped up by dealers and shipped over to America,
where there’s a huge market for it. Trade in the
States is very hot.”
Since joining the family firm in 2011,
Tom has made furniture his area of
expertise, responsible for cataloguing
and identifying the gems among
the hundreds of pieces which come
through the doors of the auction house
each month. And mid-century design
has become a particular passion.
“Everyone had a sector that they
specialised in; this was a grey area for
me for a couple of years until I saw the
gradual rise of mid-century design,”
says Tom. “I was born outside of the
time when this was the trend, and I can
see why it was so popular. The curves,
edges and exquisite design is just wonderful for the
naked eye.
“After much reading into various designers and the
history, I knew this should be my focus.”
Tom catalogued the auction house’s first specialist
mid-century sale in January last year, which included
designers such as Robin Day for Hille, John and
Sylvia Reid, Ib Kofod-Larsen, Greaves and Thomas
to name a few.
“We knew this would help the overall results as these
were household designers and brands in the 1960s
and 70s and most online searches for mid-century
modern furniture include these kind of names,” says
Tom.
As well as heading up the furniture department, Tom
can often be found following in his father Richard’s
footsteps on the rostrum, where he has developed
into a skilled auctioneer.
“Being located within the furniture department I
would always keep a close eye on the auctions, to
listen and learn,” says Tom.
“My job was to deal with customers, organise
furniture into aisles, deal with house clearances and
so on. After a few years I was getting into my role
so Dad felt the time was right to take my first ever
auction.
“A few days before my 21st birthday Dad had a
plan, which everyone knew about apart from me.
That was, to my complete surprise, to get me up and
conduct the auction. I didn’t know what to do at first,
I had to just do my best.
“I only sold 10 lots, but blimey that was one of
the longest 10 lots I have ever sold. I felt a massive
weight off my shoulders and I knew then that could
press on to be as good as Dad. It’s a great memory
and I will cherish it forever.”
While classic mid-century designs are always
appealing, Tom also has a particular fondness for
those supreme quality pieces which come through
the auction house doors.
“What makes me go ‘wow’ is the fine art furniture;
the work and the detail of the interior, it’s just
wonderful to see,” he says. “There’s always going to
be a good market for the real quality, top end pieces
and it always makes its money.”
So with mid-century bargains at auction a thing of
the past, what is the smart money on as the next
furniture trend to take over?
“I often wonder what is the next big thing,” says
Tom. “Will it be rise of period antique furniture
since its drop in prices? Some dealers think so,
buying now while it is buyable. It is a risk, but it
could pay off.
“It makes sad to see a wonderful Georgian bureau
make only £30 at auction, whereas before the midcentury
rise you couldn’t buy one for less than £500.
“A lot of people are buying antique furniture to paint
it now, tapping into the shabby chic trend - which I
think is criminal! But that means there’ll be less items
around in original condition, which in turn could
end up improving the value of those antique pieces.”
There will be some exciting furniture lots up for
grabs this month at Richard Winterton Auctioneers’
Fine and Decorative Arts Sale on March 20 and 21,
as well as the regular three-day sales on March 5 to 7
and March 26 to 28. For more details visit
All change at The Olive Tree
LONG-STANDING LICHFIELD RESTAURANT THE OLIVE TREE HAS A NEW LEASE OF LIFE, THANKS
TO NEW OWNERS WITH A FRESH TAKE ON DELECTABLE DINING, AS AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS
The name may remain, but that’s where the
similarities end. And it seems that, in this case, a
change - to quote Sheryl Crow - will do you good.
The Olive Tree has long been a stalwart on the
Lichfield dining scene, but this new iteration has
certainly got the city’s foodies excited. And with good
reason. Gone is the Mediterranean flavour, eschewed
in favour of an innovative celebration of seasonal,
good old British produce. The restaurant itself has a
fresh new look, while the friendly team are definitely
on the ball when it comes to service with a smile.
New owners Yvonne and Matt - alongside daughter
Rebecca heading up the front-of-house operation
and son-in-law Adam taking charge in the kitchen
- are passionate about the city’s dining scene. With
years of experience in the hospitality industry behind
them, the family hope their new Olive Tree will
become one of Lichfield’s hottest dining destinations.
And they’re certainly on the right track.
Following the refurbishment at the start of the year,
J’AIME was invited along to see what The Olive
Tree has to offer. And our visit showed that the
restaurant is already making its mark.
With an early booking on a Saturday evening, we
were the first diners to arrive. But it wasn’t long
before the compact eatery started filling up, so
booking ahead is essential.
After a quick chat with Yvonne we were shown to a
cosy table for two, where menus and wine lists were
swift to arrive, along with some delicious freshly
baked bread.
At lunchtime and weekday evenings, diners can
choose from a bargain of a set menu, at £17.50 for
two courses or £20 for three. The à la carte offerings,
too, represent rather good value for money, with
starters between £5 and £6 and main dishes priced
from just £12.
With just six options for each course, the menu is
short and sweet - and to be perfectly honest, I could
have happily tried just about any dish. But decisions
had to be made, and so it was the pressed confit
chicken for me, and the mackerel duo for him.
Now, I wouldn’t normally opt for something as
run-of-the-mill as chicken when eating out. But this
30

was no ordinary chicken. Moist, tender and big on
flavour, it was a joyous mouthful. Piled atop a slice of
fruity malt loaf - a genius touch - and crowned with
a salty-sweet bacon jam and a perfectly crisp sliver
of chicken skin, it was a dish I’d order again in a
heartbeat.
My hubby was equally impressed with his mackerel
platter, which boasted a soused fillet and wonderful
smoked pâté, plus a punchy horseradish beignet,
served with caraway rye bread. A smattering of
grapefruit added a nice sharpness to contrast with
the rich pâté.
So far, so delicious.
And the main courses continued to live up to early
expectations. Torn between the sea bass and red
gurnard fillet, I opted for the latter, as well as a side
order of tenderstem broccoli at £3. And what a
choice it was. The fish was perfectly cooked, with a
beautifully crispy skin, but it was the accompanying
beef shin croquette which was the star of the show.
The crisp crumb yielded to reveal a generous mound
of melt-in-the-mouth beef, while charred savoy
cabbage and smoked potatoes added intense flavour
to a dish which packed a serious punch.
Hubby’s option of liquorice spiced pork cutlet was,
he remarked, one of the best pork dishes he’d ever
eaten. Praise indeed. A refined pork belly and
parsnip tart, braised apple, caramelised sprouts and
wonderfully light and airy crackling completed a
most satisfying plate.
Moving onto desserts, we were both taken with the
idea of the baked egg custard tart with
poached rhubarb and clotted cream ice cream and
immediately began setting out a claim to make the
pud our own. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, as the kitchen
was all out of custardy delights. Oh well, maybe next
time.
The choux craquelin - a dessert made famous in
these parts following its outing on an episode of The
Great British Bake Off a couple of seasons ago - was
my next choice. The sizeable profiterole was served
with a hazelnut praline and delicious milk ice cream
and, while the craquelin itself could have been a little
crunchier for my taste, it was a good pud overall.
Hubby’s apple parfait was rather lovely, although he
was less impressed with the other elements of the
dish, finding the gingerbread too tough and the white
chocolate smear a bit sickly.
But it was a small misstep in what had proved to be
an excellent dining experience all round.
With an innovative menu of seasonal British dishes,
elegantly presented and executed with flair, The
Olive Tree has quickly become a serious contender.
Lichfield’s foodie credentials have another rather fine
string to their bow.
Mum’s new favourite wine
ALI MOUNTJOY, MANAGER OF INDULGENCE WINE AND CHOCOLATE SHOP AT BARTON MARINA,
TAKES A LOOK AT SOME TIPPLES WHICH ARE PERFECT FOR MUMS THIS MOTHER’S DAY
Even if it sometimes seems like the ladies in our lives
have everything, at least wine is rarely an unwelcome
gift. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we
wanted to share some fantastic bottles that Mum is
sure to enjoy receiving.
Villa Angela Falerio Pecorino, Marche
The mountainous region of Marche in central Italy
is teaming with sheep and, once upon a time, the
vines would be surrounded by woolly ewes who would
come down from the hills to eat the grapes. Pecorino
very nearly became extinct but, thanks to some
clever pioneering winemakers, it has recently had a
resurgence in popularity, and we’re delighted to have
this bottle as part of our range. It offers a richer and
more rounded style than others we have tried, with
classic mineral and citrus notes, there’s also honey and
hint of nuttiness. Make like the locals and enjoy it with
a creamy and crumbly Pecorino cheese!
Aragosta Rosé 2017, Cantina Santa Maria La
Palma, Sardinia
Near the seaside wine-hub of Alghero in North West
Sardinia, Cantina Santa Maria La Palma have been
well-established winemakers for the past 50 years.
Made with the island’s leading indigenous red grape,
Cannonau, this pretty Rosé not only looks attractive,
but it tastes delicious. Named ‘Aragosta’ (Lobster), it
has distinct aromas of rose and wild red fruits. The
palate is dry but oh-so delicately fruity with refreshing,
‘snappy’ acidity. Delicious to drink alone or paired
with fish or seafood.
on the finish. Ideal with grilled fish, smoked salmon,
pasta or cured meats.
Appassionatamente Rosso Veneto 2016, Cielo e
Terra, Veneto
Staying in Veneto, this unique wine is produced
by fourth generation family winery, Cielo e Terra
(Heaven and Earth), a title which goes beyond the
family name. It also represents the family’s close tie
to their long-established roots to the region which
began when the estate was founded by Giovanni
Cielo in 1908, who planted the very first vines in the
gardens surrounding the house. The appassimento
method involves drying out harvested grapes on
straw mats for a few weeks or even several months;
a process which concentrates sugars and flavours as
well as adding complexity, finesse and balance to the
wines. This Corvina blend is warm and inviting, with
deep, concentrated dark fruit flavours with hints of
chocolate and vanilla spice. A perfect accompaniment
to a roast dinner, game and duck, rich ragu dishes or
even dark chocolate.
All wines are available from italsardo.com as well as
Indulgence Wine & Chocolate Shop on Barton
Marina.
Bardolino Chiaretto 2017, Cantina Menegotti,
Veneto
If Mum prefers a Rosé that’s not too dry, this vibrant,
deep pink is bound to go down a treat. Produced
along the border of the beautiful Lake Garda, Rosé
wine is known as Chiaretto, meaning ‘little light one,’
in reference to the fact that the wines are much lighter
in body and colour when compared to the more
well-known reds of the region such as Amarone and
Valpolicella. From three generations of winemakers,
this Chiaretto offers deep cherry and raspberry
flavours with a fresh hint of mint and a delicate spice
A romantic retreat
RB COLLECTION’S KIRSTY TAYLOR TAKES A LOOK AT AN IDYLLIC
YEAR-ROUND HONEYMOON DESTINATION - BERMUDA
BERMUDA IS FAMED
FOR ITS PINK BEACHES
Before my first visit to Bermuda, I had no idea
what to expect from the tiny little island dotted in
the Atlantic. Was it part of the Caribbean? Was it
American? What I discovered was that it was neither
of these.
Located around 1000 miles away from the
Caribbean, and only a seven-hour flight away from
the UK, Bermuda is a British overseas territory
which very often gets mistaken for being a Caribbean
island. Made up of 138 islands, of which the eight
largest are connected by bridges and causeways,
Bermuda is very small being only 22 miles long and
around one mile wide, so wherever you are, you are
never far away from the sea.
For those considering a truly special honeymoon
destination, and for somewhere a little different to
the norm, Bermuda is the perfect choice. As a lot
of couples choose to get married in the UK in the
summer months, destinations such as the Caribbean
don’t make great honeymoon choices as the weather
is so unpredictable. However, this time of year is
perfect in Bermuda with wonderful warm days and
nights, and hours of glorious sunshine.
Being a Bermuda specialist and knowing all about
the destination on paper, I was eager to get my first
glimpse of the island I had learnt so much about.
Upon landing, the sight of the pretty pastel coloured
houses with their white limestone roofs, made me
instantly fell in love.
I had previously visited a number of Caribbean
islands, and I recognised straight away that Bermuda
was very different indeed. It had an air of exclusivity
and elegance, and its British heritage was very much
in prominence. Red letter boxes and telephone boxes
added to the charm of the island, and the familiarity
of driving on the left hand side of the road, and
even having roundabouts like in the UK, made me
feel very much at home albeit in a much more exotic
40

manner. One of the first things I noticed was how
immaculate and pristine Bermuda was – no gaudy
billboard advertisements or graffiti, and all of the
houses that I saw looked loved and very well looked
after. I was told by a local gentleman that once
you have visited Bermuda, you will more or less be
guaranteed to return.
And return I did a few years later with my family
to celebrate a special birthday for my father. It was
amazing to see my parents and daughter fall in love
with Bermuda in exactly the same way I had some
years previous.
As Bermuda is such a small island, it is very easy to
navigate. Although cars can’t be hired (only one car
per household is allowed), the bus and ferry systems
operate like clockwork and are a great way to get
around and meet some lovely locals while doing
so. I particularly enjoyed travelling around by ferry
as getting to see all of the
little islands with their hidden
properties was wonderful, and
made me feel very envious of
whoever was living on their
own private island in such a
glorious location! I was very
dubious of my very first bus
ride in Bermuda, and as I was
travelling at school finishing
time I had no idea what to
expect. However, I needn’t
have worried as my experience
was like nothing I had ever
witnessed in the UK – teenage
school children standing up for
myself and other adults and
BRITISH HERITAGE IS VERY MUCH EVIDENT
- LIKE THESE RED PHONE BOXES
courteously offering their seats.
GROTTO SPA I was amazed! At that moment
I fell in love with Bermuda even
more.
Bermuda is a year-round
destination, with its weather
pattern being very similar to ours.
The main summer months are
from May to October where the
temperatures can reach up to 30
degrees celsius – perfect for sun
worshippers and beach lovers. For
sightseeing and sporting activities,
October to April is a great time
to visit as the temperatures
are lower, usually between 18
and 23 degrees, making for a
more comfortable experience.
Bermuda does get rain all year
round, however the showers are
usually short and sweet, and are
very much needed by the islanders for their water
sources and for keeping everywhere looking lush and
beautiful.
Famed for its pink sand, the beaches in Bermuda
really are a sight to behold, with the best ones being
located in the South Shore area. It is no surprise
that many hotels are located here, and waking up to
a view of a beautiful pink sandy beach with waves
gently lapping over the coral reefs is an image that
will stay with me for a lifetime. Horseshoe Bay is
probably the most famous beach on Bermuda and
has been voted as the best beach in the Caribbean
(even though Bermuda isn’t in the Caribbean!) on
several occasions. Here you will find everything you
need for a fun day at the beach – food and drink
outlets, water sports galore and even caving; literally
something for all the family.
41

Bermuda is an absolute dream
for golfers and boasts six world
class courses. I am not a golfer
myself, but even I can see the
attraction of playing in such a
wonderful location with ocean
views to die for. Many worldfamous
tournaments are held
in Bermuda every year, with
its mild climate making for
the perfect conditions all year
round. The rugby World Classic
tournament is held in Bermuda
every November, where fans are
not only able to enjoy watching
fantastic matches, they also have
the opportunity to mingle with
players at one of the various concerts and parties
which are held during this period. Water sports are
also very popular in Bermuda, and the America’s
Cup was held on the island in 2017.
Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda, and is the
perfect base for those who like to get out and about
and explore, and also have lots of facilities and
amenities on their doorstep. There is an abundance
of restaurants and shops in Hamilton suiting all
tastes and budgets - you will even find an M&S!
Hamilton really comes alive on Wednesday evenings
during May through to August, when Harbour
Nights takes place. Here you will be greeted with a
host of local craft and food stalls, accompanied by
a variety of live performances and entertainment;
a true taste of Bermuda which no visitor will ever
forget.
The original capital of Bermuda, St George’s,
is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. British
Colonial history and architecture is in abundance
here, and strolling along the narrow cobbled lanes
is a wonderful way to explore the area. Maybe the
ROSEWOOD, BERMUDA
BERMUDA IS SURROUNDED
BY STUNNING CRYSTAL SEA
most prominent area of St George’s is Kings Square
where you will find the oldest bank in Bermuda
dating back to 1776. Here you will also find a replica
stocks and pillory which were used in the British
Colonial days of the 1800s to punish locals for petty
crimes they had committed. A big attraction of St
George’s which I witnessed is the ducking stool,
which in days gone by was used to duck nagging or
gossiping women into the water! You can see this
event re-enacted in a humorous way overseen by
the Town Crier in his traditional costume on certain
days throughout the year – it is well worth a visit! St
George’s was one of my favourite areas of Bermuda
which I felt, like the majority of the island, has been
unspoilt over the years.
Another favourite area of mine was the Botanical
Gardens. I had only a brief visit here but I would
have loved to have spent a peaceful day enjoying
the beautiful surroundings, colours and aromas.
Founded in 1898, the gardens are well loved by
both locals and visitors alike. I am a huge fan of
The Beatles, and I was happy to discover that John
Lennon, accompanied by his
son Sean, spent two months in
Bermuda to escape the hustle and
bustle of New York. The Botanical
Gardens were a wonderful
relaxing space for Lennon to
create fantastic hits such as
Woman and (Just Like) Starting
Over, and it was here that he saw
a beautiful freesia called Double
Fantasy, which he later named his
last album after. Local Bermudian
artist Graham Foster has created
a sculpture in John Lennon’s
honour which can be found at
the Masterworks Museum of
Bermuda Art.
For any UK National Trust members visiting
Bermuda, don’t forget to take your membership
card with you when you travel, as all National Trust
attractions on the island, including 82 properties,
can be visited for free. There are various events and
activities organised by the National Trust taking place
throughout the year, so be sure to check their calendar
before your trip.
As Bermuda is located so close to the east coast of
America, it makes for a great two-centre holiday
twinned with a visit to New York. A short flight of just
over two hours will allow you to experience a complete
contrast in two very different locations. Whether you
choose to have a whirlwind trip to New York and then
retreat to the tranquillity of Bermuda, or conserve
your energy with a stay in Bermuda prior to visiting
the bright lights and big city of New York, the choice
is yours. One thing to bear in mind is that if you are
visiting the US after your stay in Bermuda, then US
customs are cleared in Bermuda, which will save time
upon your arrival in the US.
Bermuda boasts an array of varying properties to
spend your holiday at, ranging from traditional bed
and breakfasts where afternoon tea is served on a daily
basis, through to large well known luxury hotels with
numerous restaurants and facilities. Personally, I prefer
to stay in smaller properties on Bermuda, as I have
found that the local Bermudian charm and hospitality
really shines through, and you are made to feel more
like family than a guest.
Several properties have undergone renovations since
my last visit, with fresh new modern looks but still
retaining the traditional Bermudian charm for which
they were originally loved. Grotto Bay Beach Resort
has taken advantage of their fantastic setting, and
transformed one of their beautiful caves (or grottos)
into the most wonderful spa location. Cambridge
Beaches Resort and Spa is an adults-only traditional
cottage colony which has an extremely high number
of repeat guests, who return year after year to enjoy
the peaceful location and excellent service. Cambridge
Beaches is the only property on the whole of Bermuda
which offers a private pool room - perfect for
honeymooners or couples to create memories to last a
lifetime.
In my opinion, Bermuda has something to offer
visitors of all ages. Whether you are a newlywed
couple looking for a romantic honeymoon destination,
or a family wanting a great beach holiday with water
sports and lots of exciting activities for the kids. Or
maybe a keen sporting enthusiast with a passion for
golf in beautiful surroundings, or a sightseer with a
keen interest in architecture and history – Bermuda
has it all and I hope to visit this wonderful island again
someday.
W E D D I N G S
A day to remember
KELIE AND RICH GARRATT, FROM WALSALL, TIED THE KNOT IN A FUN-FILLED DAY AT THE BOND
COMPANY IN DIGBETH, AND THEIR CELEBRATION IS PACKED WITH WEDDING DAY INSPIRATION
After nearly 20 years and two children together,
Kelie and Rich’s wedding last autumn was a truly
joyous affair, captured perfectly by award-winning
photographer Lisa Carpenter. Here, Kelie tells us
about their wedding journey...
Kelie says: “Our engagement was a long one; we got
engaged in 2002 and have been together since 1999;
we met through mutual friends who Rich was in a
band with at the time. Another friend of mine had
joined the band and I’d gone to see him play his first
gig with them at JBs in Dudley and after the gig, I
was dancing and Rich sent up a friend to ask me if
he could dance with me. I said yes and that’s where it
all began...
“In 2000 we bought our house together and in 2001
we had our son Jack and then in November 2002
after a night out when we’d been to see my favourite
band Suede play a gig in Birmingham, Rich
proposed and I said yes!”
“We always said we would go away to get married
as we didnt want a huge wedding and there was no
where local to us that we really liked. We would look
for venue ideas but nothing we saw really appealed
to us, and everything was so expensive. The years
went on and then, in 2006, we had our daughter,
Isabel. Time flies when you have children and we
were so busy bringing up our family the wedding was
no longer a priority and instead we saved our money
to go on family holidays and camping trips in our
camper van.
“Then in 2017, with our children a good
few years older and more time and money
to think about planning a wedding, we
decided to start looking properly again.
I’d started reading a couple of wedding
blogs and one day I saw an article about
a weddings in the Midlands and The
Bond caught my attention straight away.
I showed it to Rich and he liked it too; it
was completely different to any wedding
we had ever seen or been to and it looked
so unique and quirky. The photos of the
wedding at The Bond caught our eye too;
they were relaxed and fun but also very
beautiful and that’s how we found our
wedding photographer Lisa Carpenter.
That was it, we had found the perfect
venue and the perfect photographer at
the same time; we never looked at any
alternative, we knew they were the ones!
“We are both massive music fans so music
played a big part in our day. We had our
favourite bands’ names instead of the
traditional table numbers and Rich made
a seating plan from old vinyl records we
had got from charity shops.
“Our daughter Isabel suffers with really
bad hayfever so I decided to keep flowers
to a minimum and only have a flower
bouquet for myself and no flowers on the
tables. Me and my mom love to craft so
we made wool pom poms and stuck them
onto wooden skewers, popped them into glass jars
and had them as our table centrepieces. As Isabel
was my only bridesmaid, we made her a pom pom
bouquet too.
“Our cake was made by a family friend who makes
amazing cakes, it was white butter icing with a
rainbow coloured sponge inside. It was decorated
with a sprinkling of hundreds and thousands and our
cake topper was a simple ‘K & R’ with a heart in the
middle, and was made
by our daughter from
Hama Beads.
“My bouquet and the
button holes were from
Admire in Oldbury
which is a florist near
to where I work. I
wanted a mix of flowers
in bright colours and
I wanted them to be
hand tied together with
a selection of different
coloured ribbons I had
already bought. I loved
what the florist, Rosine,
created; my bouquet
was beautiful and it
lasted for weeks after the
46

wedding too.
“On the day my Dad gave me away, Rich’s best
friend Steve was his best man, my brother Alex was
an usher and one of our witnesses and our son Jack
was also an usher. Because Jack was over 16 he could
be our other witness; this made our day even more
special, having our boy sign our marriage certificate.
“One of my main memories of the day was walking
into the ceremony feeling the most nervous I have
ever felt and it completely disappearing once I saw
Rich. Our ceremony wasn’t very long but that was
our choice; my cousin Claire did a short reading
for us, we kept our vows to a minimum, we chose
three songs for the signings and we had music played
before the ceremony. Rich chose the song for me to
walk in to and I chose the song we walked out to,
which was Getting Better by Shed Seven because I
always say to Rich our life together just keeps getting
better!
“After the ceremony our photographer Lisa took us
off up to the Custard Factory to take some photos.
There was a festival on and it was amazing; some of
my favourite photos were taken there.
“Our reception was wonderful, from the food, to the
toasts and the brilliant speeches made by my Dad,
Rich and our best man Steve who had everyone in
stitches. Another favourite moment was our first
dance; we had chosen our song pretty early on and
we had kept it a surprise too. We had been practicing
dancing to it in our kitchen leading up to the
wedding and Rich decided he wanted to add in a few
moves so I let him take the lead as we danced to Neil
Young’s Harvest Moon. As he twirled me around, it
was perfect. And then the DJ started and we danced
the night away… which is exactly what I said to Rich
I wanted us to do. It was like a great party with all
our favourite people, and our DJ was brilliant. The
music was so good I missed the buffet!
“We couldn’t have wished for a more perfect day, and
we are so glad we waited until now to get married.
Our kids got to see us get married and share the
day with us, it was like a big celebration of our life
together and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
A stylish ‘do
LAUREN PERKINS, FROM ANTHONY JOHN SALONS AT HEART OF
THE COUNTRY, SWINFEN, TAKES A LOOK AT BRIDAL HAIR STYLE
Most of us girls have had a vision of our wedding
day since we knew what weddings were. This also
goes for our hair. Every woman dreams of having
that amazing bridal look with their hair just how
they imagined, but there are a few things to take into
consideration.
Firstly, finding a salon and a hairdresser you are
comfortable and happy with is a must. Secure your
date and book your trial as soon as you can; this
relieves a bit of planning stress! Having a discussion
on what your vision is and what is achievable with
your hair is so important. Meeting with your chosen
stylist can help decide what will make the most of
your hair and what will suit well with any themes,
dress types and what is realistic.
During your trial decide whether you want any
flattering face-framing pieces or some softer pieces
gripped up. Also, this may clear up if you prefer a
slicker style all pulled back. Bridal hair goes through
a lot during the day so make sure whatever you
choose will last the whole day. Having your hair
done professionally makes sure it remains secure
– something no bride wants to worry about! Some
brides prefer their hair mostly down so communicate
to your stylist how you like your hair when it is down
and how you normally wear it.
During your trial and consultation let your stylist
know how many will be in your bridal party and
what they require, for example, any blow dries for
mothers or family. Timing can be crucial on the day;
we always ask what time your ceremony is and aim
to leave around an hour before for photos and time
to get into your dress. Your stylist will let you know
what time they will arrive and leave so this can be
communicated to makeup artists and photographers.
As for current trends... the ponytail is all on the
bridal runway and throughout social media, so if
your hair is long and thick enough, give this classy
elegant style a try! Soft, textured takes on the bun
are also very popular and are a timeless style that
goes with a lot of dress styles, veils and any other
hair accessories. Plaits and twists give detailing and
softness to a style, so will create that feminine class.
I think the main thing to think about - and what I
always say to my brides - is it’s all about you feeling
like the very best version of yourself. The style you
choose must represent you and your image, that way
you will feel super confident and comfortable as well
as stunning. Remember to make the most of your
stylist and, more importantly, enjoy every second of
your day!
Captured in style
SUTTON COLDFIELD WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER LISA CARPENTER SHARES HER
TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT SNAPPER TO CAPTURE YOUR BIG DAY
Things your wedding
photographer
needs to know:
What is your wedding
style?
Are you having a vintage affair?
A cool, modern vibe? Classic
and chic? Traditional? Elegant?
Steampunk?
You’ll need to find the right
photographer for your day;
you don’t want a traditional
photographer for your post
apocalyptic themed wedding
or someone who specialises in
alternative, punk weddings for
your elegant soiree.
Editing styles vary from photographer to
photographer; my advice is to choose someone
whose photos you’ll love in 30 years time.
Coverage
What sort of coverage do you want? If you want
photography all day from bridal preparations
through to the first dance, make sure the
photographer offers this in their package.
If your wedding is small and intimate, would your
photographer be happy to offer shorter coverage?
Some won’t do this on a prime summer date when
they can book a full day with another couple.
You want the full kit and caboodle? ‘Til the best man
breaks out the caterpillar on the dance floor? Make
sure that they offer extra hours’ coverage for the late
night shenanigans!
What are you like as a couple?
Are you touchy feely, do you love to laugh, are you
fashionable, cool, moody? Are you shy, reserved and
hate having your photo taken? All of these are things
your photographer needs to know. We don’t want to
ask you to do something on your portrait shoot that
you’re completely uncomfortable with.
Do you have chemistry?
I’m hoping that’s a given with your other half! But
with your photographer? We’re hoping for this as
much as you are! You’re going to be spending as
much time with us as you are with the person you're
marrying, so getting on with each other is imperative.
The best way to find this out is to meet up for a
cuppa.
Timings
As a rule, try to plan for a good one-and-a-half
to two hours post-ceremony before going into the
wedding breakfast. That won’t all be spent on
group photos standing in a line, but it will give your
photographer the chance to do those along with
confetti, details, candids, portraits and everything else
we photograph that you won’t know about until you
receive your photos and get a lovely surprise!
Those photos with the beautiful light, that’s golden
hour and it’s about half an hour before the sun sets.
If your photographer starts jumping up and down,
waving at you frantically in the middle of your
dinner, that’s probably because the light is doing
amazing things outside and they want to shoot you in
all its glory!
Do us a favour and put your spoons down. I know
the pudding tastes amazing but you’ll be so glad you
let it go cold when you see the photos. Better still,
plan that ten minute golden hour shoot into your
timeline.
Things your wedding photographer wishes
you knew:
Engagement Shoots!
A brilliant way to get to know each other a little
better; I love an engagement shoot and it makes
your portrait sessions so much easier on the day.
Most photographers offer them as add-ons and
occasionally as part of a package, I’ve never had a
couple regret it, all have said it’s been a massive help
to make them more comfortable on the day and you
get photos together at this really exciting time in your
lives.
Makeup and hair
Go for the pros! Your photographer will happily
recommend the best in the business and you’ll look
stunning from morning ‘til night. You may be a
whizz with a blusher brush but the professionals use
the best products and if you choose the best people,
your makeup won’t move through the tears, the
cuddles or the dance floor sweat!
We don’t mind you asking to see examples of
our work
This is important! A photographer that takes
beautiful golden hour portraits isn’t necessarily the
best photographer for your winter wedding with a
4pm ceremony. You need someone that can show
you examples of a wedding that is seasonally similar
to yours.
Don’t book a friend with a good camera!
If my friends get married, they ask me first, would
I prefer to be a photographer or a guest. I always
choose guest! It’s hard to do both and while it’s a
wonderful thing to be able to do, photographing
a friend or family member’s wedding, I guarantee
they’d prefer to enjoy it as a guest.
If they don’t do this for a living, don’t risk ruining
your friendship for the sake of a few bucks. Go with
the pro.
Which leads us to... the biggie...
Budget
I get it. Weddings are bloody expensive and
photography can top that list after the venue’s
been booked and the foods been ordered. It’s been
said before by a thousand and one amazingly wise
photographers though, once the cake’s been eaten
and the dress has been worn, once the hangovers
wear off and the wedding bubble pops, you’re left
with just one thing from your day.
Photos.
Don’t scrimp on the one thing that can last a lifetime.
Wedding photographers charge anywhere from
£500 to £5,000. Have a good look around and take
into consideration their experience, their
equipment and, of course, the quality of
their photos.
It’ll all be reflected in their price and
you get what you pay for. You might get
lucky at the lower end, but if you don’t,
it’s too late for regrets.
We get booked up pretty early too so
start your search as soon as you book
your date and make sure you don’t miss
out on your perfect snapper! And if you
think it could be me - drop me a line!
Now, pop that fizz and celebrate, it’s
wedding time!
JILL HARTLEY, CO-FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF NERO E BIANCO EXCLUSIVE FASHION AND BRIDAL
BOUTIQUE AT BARTON MARINA, GIVES US A RUNDOWN ON 2019’S HOTTEST WEDDING STYLES
This year is an exciting year for Nero e Bianco as our mother of the bride or groom and bridal ranges are bigger
than ever. With that being said, we thought it was time to launch something extra special for our lovely customers
- online bookings. At neroebiancobridal.co.uk, as a bride or mother of the bride or groom you can book your
free appointment with us to allow us to find you an outfit you’re sure to love on such an important day.
We wanted to show you a couple of our stunning wedding dresses and mother of the bride or groom looks so
you can get an idea of the styles we offer, although more can be viewed on our website, or feel free to pop into
store before booking an appointment to browse the extensive collections.
Mum’s the word
Being a mother of the bride or groom isn’t an easy job.
It means that you’re important and need a beautiful look
that shows you off more than the wedding guests, but less
than the bride herself.
Nero e Bianco are experts in all things mother of the
bride or groom, with years of specialist experience in
the field. One of our favourite looks for the upcoming
wedding season is this exquisitely styled outfit; a simple
dress featuring lace embroidery, paired with a long-line
jacket. This look is delicate yet empowering and will
make you feel confident and beautiful when you watch
your loved ones tie the knot.
Short and sweet
This dress just exudes beauty with its floral bodice
and netted skirt. An enchanting dress that is
extremely detailed with its intricate design and yet
looks minimalistic in style. It’s a simple, but classy
and sophisticated dress for your big day. This shorter
style is popular among brides-to-be this season!
56

Sheer perfection
This is another delicately
embroidered floral dress for
you brides-to-be, however this
time it features a sheer halter
neck that we just love. This style
makes it easy to transition from
day to evening so you can dance
the night away with your new
husband. It’s a modern look that
looks gorgeous from every angle
as you walk down the aisle.
Modern mum
Finally, we have this stunning mother
of the bride or groom dress that is
simply divine. Incorporating a floral
pattern, a dip hem, cinched waist,
square neckline and open back, this
dress has absolutely everything you
could ever want. It’s particularly
perfect for weddings abroad or in the
height of summer here in the UK.
It’s a fantastic dress as it can make
ladies of all shapes and sizes feel
utterly beautiful and confident. Again,
this dress is great to see you through
the whole wedding day, from day to
evening. You need a comfortable dress
where you don’t have to compromise
The new neutral
MOVE OVER BLACK, GREY AND NAVY, THERE’S A HOT NEW
NEUTRAL ON THE BLOCK FOR SS19, SAYS AMY NORBURY
IF the SS19 catwalks were dominated by any single
shade, it was brown. On paper it might sound like just
about the least sexy hue imaginable, but wait a moment;
50 shades of chocolate, coffee and caramel made for a
delicious neutral palette across a plethora of designers’
shows.
From perennially chic at Burberry - as expected, given
the fashion house’s adoration of all things beige - to pale
as the milkiest latte at Jil Sander and in spicier hues at
Alberta Ferretti, it appeared in abundance and made
for painfully sophisticated impact. No longer rooted in
the '70s, brown is now a quintessentially modern hue -
and head to toe is how the internationally sleek will be
wearing it this season.
Richer and more textured that the flat tones of everfashionable
black, brown shades are eminently wearable,
super flattering and easy to incorporate into your
wardrobe for just about any occasion. So if your attire is
stuck in neutral, make sure brown’s where it’s at.
The prominence of brown shades also taps into the
season’s trend for all things utilitarian; the theme
marched through the collections to a resounding
approval from the fashion press. From patch-pocket
trousers at Givenchy to utility shirts at Burberry and
Fendi’s combat pants, functional fashion is here to stay
with shades of oatmeal, stone and toffee adding a 2019
twist.
Look out for sharp tailoring, crisp lines and tied-waist
belt details, as well as sizeable pockets in jackets, skirts
and trousers - practical and stylish.
And while its reputation might be on the bland and
boring side, that doesn’t mean brown can’t be seriously
sexy; form-fitting pencil skirts in the buttery-softest
chocolate leather, camis in wisps of deep espresso silk
and lace, and skyscraper barely-there heels in mahogany
hues add that requisite touch of spice.
Casting call for medical TV show
A Birmingham-based TV production company
is looking for candidates to take part in a new
show aimed at treating people with extreme skin
conditions, which starts filming this month.
Full Fat TV, the company behind Channel 4’s
Body Coach with Joe Wicks, are making the series
for Quest Red, which is part of the global TV
broadcaster Discovery Network.
The programme is inspired by the massive popularity
of Dr Pimple Popper, an American dermatologist
from California who has her own series on TLC.
The show will feature a world class, award-winning
dermatologist who works mostly for the NHS but
also has a private clinic in Harley Street. She will
be treating people with all types of extreme skin
conditions.
In the age of social media, there’s never been a
worse time to have an uncontrollable, unsightly skin
condition but there’s a whole host of people living
with angry rashes or eruptions, debilitating acne,
large lipomas, growths, cysts, crusty, flaky, scarred
skin or other extreme undiagnosed conditions on
the face or body. In many cases their confidence is
shattered, their personal or professional lives are on
hold and some have even been forced into isolation.
Series producer Donna McLaughlin said: “Despite
this, the NHS doesn’t offer treatment for skin
conditions considered to be cosmetic and those they
do treat often have long waiting lists. For example,
current waiting lists for the Midlands area are up
to 24 weeks so this is a brilliant opportunity for
someone who might otherwise not be treated, can’t
afford to go private or doesn’t want to wait that
long to get the help they need pretty quickly and if
selected, their consultation, procedure and travel cost
would be covered.
“Filming is scheduled to start in early March and
although it’s a serious medical programme, there will
be a transformational element as we will be helping
people not just with the way they look but also giving
them back the confidence they may have lost due to
their condition and with it, a new lease of life.
“Our expert treats many skin conditions but are
we particularly keen to hear from people with
large lumps that need surgically removing - big
cysts, lipomas and growths. We also want to feature
more unusual or rare conditions that are visually
shocking to look at and are targeting specific
diseases like folliculitis, hirsutism, hyperhydrosis,
neurofibromatosis, rhinophyma, hidradenitis
suppurativa, erythromelagia, hyper keratotsis,
seborreic keratosis and intertriginous dermatitis.”
Anyone interested in taking part can contact the
production team on email at skin@fullfattv.co.uk,
phone 0121 272 5841 or WhatsApp 07526 238856.
Spectacular results as lens operation does away with need for glasses
When she realised she had a pair of reading glasses in
most of her coat pockets, former school teacher, Pat
Gardiner decided she had to do something about her
eyesight.
She didn’t want to continually wear glasses, didn’t
fancy contact lenses and was too old for laser surgery
so Pat, one-time Head of English at Fairfax School in
Sutton Coldfield, started to research other options. “By
coincidence one of my gym buddies told me about lens
replacement - she had had the procedure done and was
delighted with the results,” she said.
Along with her husband Max, Pat attended an
information event at Spire Eye Centre and discussed
the various ways of correcting her vision with
consultant ophthalmic surgeon Mr Daniel Calladine.
He explained: “The natural lens becomes less flexible
with age, and less able to change shape to focus on
reading for example. The distance vision can also
become blurred if the patient’s glasses prescription
keeps changing. In Mrs Gardiner’s case I was able to
use an ‘extended range vision’ lens, that allowed her to
see both distance, middle and near vision for reading
without the need for glasses afterwards.
“As well as correcting long and short sightedness, the
lens is also able to correct astigmatism and problems
with reading vision.”
Now working as an association visitor for the Motor
Neurone Disease Association, Pat said: “To be honest, I
was uncomfortable for a day or two as my eye felt a bit
gritty and my vision was occasionally blurred. However,
when the second eye was done my sight was clear and
focussed from the moment I removed my eye patch and
I was home in time for lunch!”
Keen skier Pat is now looking forward to her next trip
to the slopes, knowing she won’t have to make the
dreaded ‘glasses or goggles’ choice. She has already sent
almost 20 old pairs of glasses to Oxfam and is certain
she will be sending many more as they continue to turn
up in ‘the strangest of places’.
“Based on my experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to
recommend Mr Calladine and the Spire Eye Centre for
this procedure. I can honestly say the results have been
spectacular.”
Daniel Calladine is hosting a free information evening
on clear lens exchange surgery, at Spire Eye Centre,
Spire Hospital, Little Aston, on Wednesday, March
27, from 6pm. To book your complimentary place call
Life in the fast lane
J’AIME’S MOTORING EXPERT AND RESIDENT RACING DRIVER MARTIN PLOWMAN
DRIVES A TESLA MODEL S COURTESY OF TESLA MOTORS IN DIGBETH TO SEE IF HE
CAN BE SWAYED INTO BECOMING AN ELECTRIC CAR CONVERT
As a petrol head, going electric is a bit like being a
steak lover trying to go vegetarian. It just doesn’t
sound very appealing! But electric cars are slowly
but surely becoming mainstream, and their eventual
takeover is inevitable. Elon Musk, the eccentric
American entrepreneur and visionary has been a
leading pioneer of the electric car revolution, as the
owner and co-founder of Tesla Motors.
What's it like to drive?
The whole experience of starting the car is a little
surreal at first. You put your foot on the brake, pull
down on the right lever to select Drive and... nothing
happens. There's no noise, no rev of the engine
as it roars into life. Then as you gently press the
accelerator the car starts to creep forward smoothly.
Your brain can't connect the movement of the car
with the lack of noise, but you find yourself start
to become more aware of your surroundings and
external sounds that usually get drowned out by the
engine. I found it quite refreshing.
I took the car for a spin around the busy streets near
Birmingham’s Bullring. It was the perfect place to
test the car in stop-start traffic and see first hand the
amazing autopilot technology that is on tap with all
Tesla models. It has 12 Ultrasonic sensors capable of
detecting roads, other cars and potential hazards as
well as a 360-degree camera, all of which is claimed
is ready for fully autonomous driving, as soon as the
software and legislation catch up to the available
technology. I engaged the assisted autopilot feature in
the heavy traffic and, although I was hesitant to trust
it at first, it worked remarkably well. The car kept in
its lane, kept a safe distance to the vehicle in front,
slowed down when needed and even recognised
a dangerous corner thanks to Tesla's self-learning
capabilities. Theoretically, you could take your hands
off the wheel if you wanted to and let the car do its
thing (disclaimer: It is strongly recommended to keep
your hands on the wheel at all times to override the
car as it is not yet fully autonomous!).
The car has a very firm but smooth ride. Its rigid
chassis gives direct feedback. It has a tremendous
amount of grip mainly thanks to its very low centre
of gravity, and it's All-Wheel-Drive drivetrain. All of
the battery packs are located on the floor of the car
which, combined with high-performance tyres and
state-of-the-art traction control, means that it is very
hard to wheelspin or lose control.
The Tesla is a car that feels great just cruising around
on your daily commute, but I, of course, wanted to
65

get a taste for what it could do if
you pressed the 'not-so-loud' pedal.
The standard 70D configuration
puts out an equivalent of 330BHP
and 387lb/ft of torque, while the
P100 spec puts out a staggering
450kW, approximately 600bhp! The
acceleration is just unreal, there is
no lag or power curve that you get
from a combustion engine. Power
is instant and constant. It sucks you
into the back of your seat, not giving
you a second to catch your breath.
Its 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds will
out-drag even the most exotic of
supercars and that alone justifies its
starting price.
In my opinion the Tesla is an extremely underrated
high-performance car because its looks don't exude
aggressive supercar styling. But as the old saying
goes, ‘never judge a book by its cover’; trust me when
I say that this thing can shift faster than any sports
car in the same class that I have ever driven.
The product is second to none in my opinion,
and just 20 minutes of driving around rush hour
Birmingham was enough to make me go home and
google how much money I could sell my kidney for
on the black market to see if I could afford one!
Safety is another huge selling point for Tesla.
Because a Tesla doesn't have a heaping lump of
metal at the front powering the car, it has ample
loads of space for extra energy-absorbing crumple
zones for head-on collisions. The low centre of
gravity I mentioned earlier also makes the car very
resistant to rolling over in a side impact and the
autopilot technology? That helps to prevent you from
clumsy accidents by distracted drivers.
Now for the reality check. What is holding back the
electric car market?
There are two significant hurdles that the electric
car market, in general, has to overcome if they are
to engage the mainstream car buyer. The first is,
naturally, cost to purchase. Most electric cars have
quite a substantial up-front cost to buy the car - the
base Model S starts around £65,000 before extras
- which is mostly down to the fact that Lithium
batteries and energy recovery technology are still
costly to manufacture. Once car makers figure out
a way to produce batteries cheaply than the vehicle
costs will drop.
The second and most important hurdle to overcome
is the limited infrastructure of vehicle charging
stations compared to the vast network and volume
of petrol stations. The latter is something that Tesla
has grappled with both hands and may just be the
key to Tesla’s long-term success. With more than
12,000 charging stations strategically located around
the world, they are continually investing in their
infrastructure. This gives an awful lot of freedom
to Tesla owners and makes cross-continent trips
possible, whereas other brands have to struggle their
way from charging point to charging point.
Back in 2012, I took part in a cross-America sixperson
team drive for Men’s Health magazine
driving a Ford Focus Electric in an attempt to
make the fastest drive from New York to
California in an all-electric vehicle. Back
then the Ford Focus only had a tiny 90-
mile range and would require a three-hour
charge. They were 90 hard-fought miles
using extreme eco-driving with a few
slightly illegal drafting tactics to get the
job done! Fast forward eight years and the
Tesla Model S boasts a range of 335 miles
of ‘normal’ driving, while Tesla’s Super
Charger will give you 170 miles in just a
30-minute charge.
Electric cars are taking over - and fast.
Don't be scared, petrol-heads, they're a
good thing! I promise.
