Bermuda is an absolute dream for golfers and boasts six world class courses. I am not a golfer myself, but even I can see the attraction of playing in such a wonderful location with ocean views to die for. Many worldfamous tournaments are held in Bermuda every year, with its mild climate making for the perfect conditions all year round. The rugby World Classic tournament is held in Bermuda every November, where fans are not only able to enjoy watching fantastic matches, they also have the opportunity to mingle with players at one of the various concerts and parties which are held during this period. Water sports are also very popular in Bermuda, and the America’s Cup was held on the island in 2017. Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda, and is the perfect base for those who like to get out and about and explore, and also have lots of facilities and amenities on their doorstep. There is an abundance of restaurants and shops in Hamilton suiting all tastes and budgets - you will even find an M&S! Hamilton really comes alive on Wednesday evenings during May through to August, when Harbour Nights takes place. Here you will be greeted with a host of local craft and food stalls, accompanied by a variety of live performances and entertainment; a true taste of Bermuda which no visitor will ever forget. The original capital of Bermuda, St George’s, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. British Colonial history and architecture is in abundance here, and strolling along the narrow cobbled lanes is a wonderful way to explore the area. Maybe the ROSEWOOD, BERMUDA BERMUDA IS SURROUNDED BY STUNNING CRYSTAL SEA most prominent area of St George’s is Kings Square where you will find the oldest bank in Bermuda dating back to 1776. Here you will also find a replica stocks and pillory which were used in the British Colonial days of the 1800s to punish locals for petty crimes they had committed. A big attraction of St George’s which I witnessed is the ducking stool, which in days gone by was used to duck nagging or gossiping women into the water! You can see this event re-enacted in a humorous way overseen by the Town Crier in his traditional costume on certain days throughout the year – it is well worth a visit! St George’s was one of my favourite areas of Bermuda which I felt, like the majority of the island, has been unspoilt over the years. Another favourite area of mine was the Botanical Gardens. I had only a brief visit here but I would have loved to have spent a peaceful day enjoying the beautiful surroundings, colours and aromas. Founded in 1898, the gardens are well loved by both locals and visitors alike. I am a huge fan of The Beatles, and I was happy to discover that John Lennon, accompanied by his son Sean, spent two months in Bermuda to escape the hustle and bustle of New York. The Botanical Gardens were a wonderful relaxing space for Lennon to create fantastic hits such as Woman and (Just Like) Starting Over, and it was here that he saw a beautiful freesia called Double Fantasy, which he later named his last album after. Local Bermudian artist Graham Foster has created a sculpture in John Lennon’s honour which can be found at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art. 42
For any UK National Trust members visiting Bermuda, don’t forget to take your membership card with you when you travel, as all National Trust attractions on the island, including 82 properties, can be visited for free. There are various events and activities organised by the National Trust taking place throughout the year, so be sure to check their calendar before your trip. As Bermuda is located so close to the east coast of America, it makes for a great two-centre holiday twinned with a visit to New York. A short flight of just over two hours will allow you to experience a complete contrast in two very different locations. Whether you choose to have a whirlwind trip to New York and then retreat to the tranquillity of Bermuda, or conserve your energy with a stay in Bermuda prior to visiting the bright lights and big city of New York, the choice is yours. One thing to bear in mind is that if you are visiting the US after your stay in Bermuda, then US customs are cleared in Bermuda, which will save time upon your arrival in the US. Bermuda boasts an array of varying properties to spend your holiday at, ranging from traditional bed and breakfasts where afternoon tea is served on a daily basis, through to large well known luxury hotels with numerous restaurants and facilities. Personally, I prefer to stay in smaller properties on Bermuda, as I have found that the local Bermudian charm and hospitality really shines through, and you are made to feel more like family than a guest. Several properties have undergone renovations since my last visit, with fresh new modern looks but still retaining the traditional Bermudian charm for which they were originally loved. Grotto Bay Beach Resort has taken advantage of their fantastic setting, and transformed one of their beautiful caves (or grottos) into the most wonderful spa location. Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa is an adults-only traditional cottage colony which has an extremely high number of repeat guests, who return year after year to enjoy the peaceful location and excellent service. Cambridge Beaches is the only property on the whole of Bermuda which offers a private pool room - perfect for honeymooners or couples to create memories to last a lifetime. In my opinion, Bermuda has something to offer visitors of all ages. Whether you are a newlywed couple looking for a romantic honeymoon destination, or a family wanting a great beach holiday with water sports and lots of exciting activities for the kids. Or maybe a keen sporting enthusiast with a passion for golf in beautiful surroundings, or a sightseer with a keen interest in architecture and history – Bermuda has it all and I hope to visit this wonderful island again someday.
