Hotel Neptun, one of the most famous in Mecklenburg
Last year, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was the official
partner region of the ITB Berlin. We asked Harry Glawe
– the region’s Minister of Economics, Employment and
Health, how this has benefited the region.
Our presence at the world’s
largest travel trade fair, which
we co-organised together with
many partners from the region,
has already borne fruit. Our goal
was to gain more publicity on the
international stage by presenting
ourselves as a friendly, modern
and open-minded region—and we
succeeded in this. The opening
night alone was a huge success
and opened new doors. In terms of
media coverage, we have reached
our best result in the history of this
trade fair.
How is tourism developing in
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern?
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the
most popular tourist destination
of the Germans and is becoming
increasingly attractive for
international visitors as well, not
least thanks to the ITB Berlin. Our
region has the highest tourism
intensity of all German states.
Recently, we have launched a
tourism strategy for the region in a
bid to offer an even higher-quality
service, more internationality and
stronger cross-links between our
services.
How is Mecklenburg-
Vorpommern presenting itself at
this year’s ITB?
A total of 19 exhibitors, among
them tourist associations and hotel
partners, present Mecklenburg-
Vorpommern to visitors from the
tourism industry and to potential

holidaymakers across an area of
500 square metres in hall 6.2a. We
present new attractions, such as the
“ManufakTour”, a tour leading to 20
designers and artisans in Western
Mecklenburg, or the impressive
holiday architecture on the island of
Rügen. On the public days, we offer
our visitors regional beer tastings,
photo specials and more.
What are the three “key selling
points” of Mecklenburg-
Vorpommern?
The triad of 2,000 kilometres
of coastline, 2,000 lakes and
2,000 castles delights many of
our holidaymakers. Numerous
festivals are held on the coast in
the summer, the lakes attract water
sports enthusiasts and the castles
form the scenery for a variety of
events. In many palaces and manor
houses, guests find stately sleeping
accommodation, whereas others
are the venues of world-class music
concerts or exclusive exhibitions
BUSY YEAR FOR
MECKLENBURG-
VORPOMMERN TOURISM
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s
tourism calendar is crowded this
year. As well as big events such as
the Hansa Sail or the Warnemünde
Seen Zeek, the region is hosting
the Rügen Spring Hike in April,
featuring some 60 hiking tours; the
94th International Bach Festival is
being staged in Rostock from 10
- 19 May and there will be events
to mark the 600th anniversary of
Rostock university, and the 800th
anniversary of the city itself.
For art lovers, KunstOffen, held
from 8 - 10 June, will feature the
work of 800 artists and artisans.
The Wismar Port Festival will
take place 13 - 16 June, while
MittsommerRemise on 23 and 24
June will see mansions opening
their doors to the public. From 15
June to 29 September, the region
celebrates the 29th Summer
Festival with a series of concerts,
while the Warnemünde Week in
June is expected to draw around
700,000 people to one of the
biggest international sailing events
in Germany. And on 29 August,
a million visitors will come to
Rostock for the Hanse Sail, the
largest maritime festival in the
region.
FROM PRISON
TO HOSTEL
The former juvenile detention
home in Wismar near St. Mary’s
Church will be turned into a hostel
comprising 30 rooms on three
floors, most of them being for two
to four guests. Work will begin in
the summer, and the opening of
the heritage-protected building
is scheduled for 2020. The hostel
will be run by well-known German
globetrotters Anne-Juliana and
Stefan Bunkelmann.

ARCHITECTURE
TOURS
“Inselbaukunst“ (Island
Architecture) is the title of the
new, year-long campaign by the
Tourismuszentrale Rügen, which
is dedicated to the architectural
highlights of Germany’s largest
island. Focus will be on resort villas
and piers of the island as well as on
architect Ulrich Müther, a visionary
who designed modernist spaceinspired
buildings, particularly
seaside restaurants. Architectural
gems will be presented through
exhibitions, events and guided
