Chance for student to connect with China
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
TIM MARSHALL has a strong
interest in connecting people to
China.
So it is only fitting Canterbury
University’s Global China Connection
club president will travel
to Washington next month to
a global summit aiming to give
young people business and cultural
opportunities.
The 20-year-old Halswell resident
has been selected to attend
the Global China Connection
Summit in Washington, DC.
The summit runs for two days
and will include meeting with
future leaders from US universities,
speakers from Chinese and
US humanitarian agencies and
other members from GCC clubs
around the world.
It will be Mr Marshall’s first
time travelling to the event, after
being involved in the Global
China Connection club for
about two years before becoming
president in November.
“I think it is important because
they (China) are trying to
play a huge part in our economy
and we have a lot of culture relations
now.
“We have a lot of students
coming across now, I think it is
important we all have all good
SUCCESSFUL: With a strong interest in international relations,
Halswell resident Tim Marshall is going to Washington next
month for the Global China Connection Summit in Washington
DC.
strategies and ways to manage
that and understand each other,”
Mr Marshall said.
He has just started his third
year studying a Bachelor of
Commerce at Canterbury University
and is hoping to work in
international relations when he
graduates.
“Helping New Zealand business
connect with the Asian
region or vice versa. I think it is
really important we have those
strong ties,” Mr Marshall said.
He first became interested in
China about two years ago while
working with Chinese students
on a language technology project.
At the end of 2017, he
travelled to Beijing for five
weeks to research the culture
and how to increase migration
from China into Canterbury as
part of the Canterbury Mayoral
Forum.
“It is on another level, it is an
incredible place . . . the culture
of the place is totally different,”
Mr Marshall said.
The key difference that stood
out to him was the city having a
rental bicycle system similar to
the Lime scooters – where they
can be picked up and dropped
off from anywhere.
Phones were also used as a
form of payment instead of
credit cards and the agriculture
technology was very advanced,
Mr Marshall said.
He said while China and New
Zealand’s political systems are
different, the two countries have
a good connection.
Mr Marshall said businesses
such as China Southern Airlines
has been helpful to the city
and sponsoring Canterbury
University.
Have your say
on Kyle Park
CHANGES NEEDED to pave the
way for a Hornby mega-facility
to be built at Kyle Park have gone
out for public consultation.
The city council needs to
make changes to the Kyle Park
Management Plan and the area’s
reserve classification in order for
the Hornby Library, Customer
Services and Leisure Centre to be
built.
The changes would apply to
the north-east corner adjacent to
Waterloo Rd and Smarts Rd —
the part of the Kyle Park proposed
for the new facility.
The rest of the park will remain
unaffected.
It is after the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
approved having the management
plan go out for public
consultation and to reclassify part
of Kyle Park recently.
The Hornby facility and
associated car parks will make up
four per cent of the total park area.
The city council is proposing to
reclassify 1.52ha, which is 17.5 per
cent of the total part area
•Consultation runs
until April 15. To make a
