<strong>The</strong>re were rollers set round with spikes, for<br />

bruising the arms and back; there were iron<br />

scourges, pincers, and tongs for tearing out the<br />

tongue, slitting the nose and ears, and otherwise<br />

disfiglaring and mangling the body till it was<br />

horrible and horrifying to look upon it. <strong>The</strong>re were<br />

other things of which an expert only could tell the<br />

name and the use. Had these instruments a tongue,<br />

and could the history of this chamber be written,<br />

how awful the tale!<br />

We shall suppose that all this has been gone<br />

through; that the confessor has been stretched on<br />

the bed of torture; has been gashed, broken,<br />

mangled, and yet, by power given him from above,<br />

has not denied his Savior: he has been "tortured not<br />

accepting deliverance:" what further punishment<br />

has the Holy Office in reserve for those from<br />

whom its torments have failed to extort a<br />

recantation? <strong>The</strong>se dreadful dungeons furnish us<br />

with the means of answering this question.<br />
