Arrest after suspicious
cemetery fire
A 32-year-old has been arrested
following a suspicious fire in
Addington Cemetery on Sunday.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand were called to the 10m x
5m bush fire at 4.50am. He was
charged with two counts of arson
and one count of intentional
damage and will appear in the
district court today. City council
manager community parks Al
Hardy said damage caused by the
fire was minimal and confined to
a small area.
Lancaster Park
demolition continues
Work is under way to remove
the rest of the Paul Kelly and
Deans stands at Lancaster
Park – the final step in the
earthquake-damaged stadium’s
deconstruction. The roofs of both
stands were removed last year. It
is expected the deconstruction
will be completed in December
this year.
New bus stops for
health precinct
Work to construct two bus
shelters and six dedicated bus
bays outside the health precinct
on Tuam St, between Hagley Ave
and Antigua St, is under way. The
work will take about nine months
to complete and temporary stops
will be in place on Riccarton and
Hagley Aves.
A $3.6 MILLION refresh of
parts of Cathedral Square is
expected to start in the coming
months.
The south-east and west
corners of the Square from
Worcester to Colombo Sts and
Strand Lane will be completed in
three phases, and include better
lighting, upgraded paving and
new trees.
The work, which will be
the first step in the highlyanticipated
Square makeover,
was approved by the city
council’s infrastructure,
transport and environment
committee yesterday.
The plans, which are expected
to make the area safer and more
pleasant, will get final sign off
from city councillors.
If approved, the work would
start in July during the low
visitor season.
A city council report said the
earthquakes and the demolition
of many of the buildings around
the Square’s fringes have left it
worn down and no longer fit for
purpose.
About 40 per cent of the
pavement is damaged and the
lack of lighting in the area
creates a sense of unease at night,
the report said.
Fifty per cent of the pavers
would be reused. It has
been designed to fit in with
$3.6M Square revamp likely
the construction of two
new buildings – Redson
Corporation’s souvenir shop and
the Spark offices on either side of
Hereford St in the Square.
The Spark building is expected
to be completed in September.
However, the work is not part
of Regenerate Christchurch’s
plan for the Square.
“This project does not
deliver the wider, unfunded
regeneration plan for the
Square and surrounds but does
test and work towards some key
elements of it within a localised
area,’’ the report said.
Phase one will create a paved
threshold strip wide enough to
provide an accessible zone in the
south-east of the Square.
Phases two and three
will involve re-paving in
the wider areas in front of
developed with Matapopore,
Phase four will look at the
