Pier repairs
on budget
• By Matt Slaughter
THE NEW Brighton Pier repair
came in $2 million under budget,
a new report shows.
The repair of all 17 of the pier’s
support columns cost $7.84
million, $2 million less than
the $9.88 million originally
budgeted.
Coastal Ward city councillor
David East said the repairs took
16 months – It reopened in May
instead of the scheduled March.
But Cr East said getting the
work completed as quickly as it
was, had been impressive.
Two cyclones and some difficult
scaffolding positioning had
slowed the project down.
“It’s fair to say the work was
extremely challenging and they
were working in quite a dangerous
and challenging environment.”
The repair was done in stages,
so different parts of the pier
remained open for most of the
project.
“They kept the pier open as
much as was possible for people
to use and they accommodated
fireworks displays and a few other
things as well,” Cr East said.
“It was a pretty cooperative and
challenging sort of exercise.”
The completion of this and
other projects like the New
Brighton beachside playground
were positive signs, he said.
‘Warrant of fitness’ issue for tug
Maritime NZ
holds up
launch date
• By Louis Day
TUG LYTTELTON will not
be able to carry passengers as
planned because it has not been
given a ‘warrant of fitness.’
A Maritime NZ spokeswoman
said the surveyor was yet to issue
a certificate of survey for the
vessel.
“This is similar to a warrant of
fitness for a car. Maritime NZ are
also assessing the Tug Lyttelton’s
maritime
transport
operator plan,
this document
contains the
operator’s
safety
procedures.
The next step
Mike Bruce
in this process
will be to visit
the site to assess
their understanding of the plan,”
she said.
The tug’s first passenger
cruise in three years was
originally scheduled to take
place in December but was
news online at www.star.kiwi
DISAPPOINTMENT: Tug Lyttelton’s highly-anticipated first passenger cruise in three years
is now unlikely to take place until October.
pushed back to January and then
February.
However, it is now looking
unlikely to happen before this
season ends in April.
Tug Lyttelton Preservation
Society head stoker Mike Bruce
said passenger cruises are now
likely to take place at the start of
the next season in October.
The society is now struggling
financially because it has not held
a passenger cruise in three years.
Said Mr Bruce: “We are under
extreme pressure. We are going
for some grants, some of the
members are supporting us but
we have just got a bill for our
public liability insurance for
$6000, we just don’t have the
money to pay for it.”
But the setback has not
dampened Mr Bruce’s
hopes of getting the tug going
again.
“You pull your head in, you
be nice and polite, you help
where you can and you just get
on with it. We will get there
eventually,” he said.
