Brand History o IKEA was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, the store was first used as a mail-order sales business. Five years later, the store began to sell furniture, the first Möbel-IKÉA store was opened in Älmhult, Småland, in 1958. The first store outside Sweden was opened in Norway in 1963 and Denmark in 1969, the store then spread to other parts of Europe in the ’70s, the first store opened that was opened outside of Scandinavia, was in Switzerland in 1973 which was shortly followed by West Germany in 1974. As the founder was a carpenter, he saw an opening in the market for self-assembly furniture, using catalogues and showrooms to reach as many people as possible. In the ’60s and ’70s, the brand started to take shape and “hero products” came into place. o In the next decade, IKEA started their expansion outside Scandinavia and reached further parts of Europe like; the United Kingdom, France and Italy as well as the United States. o As IKEA grows and develops as a brand, so does their products and collections, in the 1990’s Children’s IKEA is introduced, as their (IKEA) focus is shifted to meet the demands of families with children. o Coming into the new century, IKEA has explored every possibility for home furnishings as everything for bedrooms and kitchen is traversed. Brand History Pt.2 o Founded in 1943, carpenter Ingvar Kamprad introduced a new way of selling furniture into the industry, as home assembly was not frequently herd of in the mid-twentieth century o IKEA is under the holding of its parent organisation, Dutch registered, Stiching INGKA Foundation (which was named after Ingvar Kamprad). o However there has been an increase of stores, since then as in November 2018, IKEA now has 424 stores in 52 countries. o The products that IKEA sells are of a wide range from baby furnishing to indoor gardening.
