Soft Skills Checklist
For Gen Z

Welcome
Welcome back to
Sekolah Pelita Bangsa
We had fabulous activities at Sekolah
Pelita Bangsa in term 3 where student
were given myriad opportunities to play,
collaborate and perform at their best
whether during Intramurals, Chinese
New Year Celebration, Buddy Reading
times or Global School Play Day.
Kindergarten students also had
the opportunities to visit some local
community places in our city.
In Term 4, we will celebrate literacy or the
importance of reading in our lives with
“Literacy Week” and “Vocabulary Parade.”
We would encourage our students to love
reading and to keep reading as a source
of enjoyment, self-development and
knowledge for the rest of their lives.
It is disheartening to learn research
data (2016) from the OECD PIAAC
(Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development Programme for
International Assessment of Adult
Competencies) that typical Indonesian
adult with university degree, has lower
literacy proficiency than adults in every
other OECD country who only completed
High School. We encourage parents to
also cultivate the love of reading at home
and motivate students to read at home.
“If you want your children to be
intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you
want them to be more intelligent, read
them more fairy tales.” ― Albert Einstein
Warm Regards,
ECE CORNER | PARENTING TIPS
How to Teach Toddlers and
Preschoolers Self-Control
Adapted article from KidsHealth
By learning self-control, kids can make
appropriate decisions and respond to
stressful situations in ways that can
yield positive outcomes.
For example, if you say that you’re not
serving ice cream until after dinner, your
child may cry, plead, or even scream in
hopes that you will give in. But with selfcontrol,
your child can understand that a
temper tantrum means you’ll take away
the ice cream for good and that it’s wiser
to wait patiently.
Here are a few suggestions on how to help
young kids learn to control their behavior.
Up to Age 2
Infants and toddlers get frustrated by the
large gap between the things they want
to do and what they’re able to do. They
often respond with temper tantrums.
1. Distract your child
Try to prevent outbursts by distracting
your little one with toys or other
activities. (Think about it, this is how
many grown-ups enable themselves
to resist snacking on unhealthy treats.
They divert themselves with another
activity or option.)
2. Give it a name
Name what you’re trying to teach. Say,
“We are growing your self-control muscle!
See, you can wait like a big kid!”
3. Time out
For kids reaching the 2-year-old mark, try
a brief timeout in a designated area — like
a kitchen chair or bottom stair — to show
the consequences for outbursts and teach
that it’s better to take some time alone
instead of throwing a tantrum.
4. Kudos
Sing your child’s praises when he does
show self-control.
Ages 3 to 5
1. Adjust time outs
You can continue to use timeouts, but
rather than enforcing a specific time
limit, end timeouts once your child has
calmed down. This helps your child
improve his sense of self-control.
2. Build your child up
Help your child believe in his selfcontrol
ability. Say, “I bet you can wait
five minutes until we get home to have
something to drink. And I bet you can
do it without complaining.”
3. Reward your child
Praise your child for not losing control
in frustrating or difficult situations.
Make a big deal of his success with our
Printable Self-Control Award Certificate.
Soft Skills Checklist for Gen Z
By Carole Donaldson
The Gen Z workforce has captured the
attention of Learning and Development
teams and for good reason. This
younger generation of workers is rapidly
becoming the majority in the workplace.
Over 60 million Gen Zers are about to
enter the U.S. workforce.
Employers are concerned it will be more
difficult to train these young adults than
previous generations since many of
them do not have as much exposure to
social interactions. This is consistent
to the findings of a national survey by
APPrise Mobile, that finds Gen Zers are
not savvy at social communications.
While this newer cohort of workers offer
new technical skills, perspectives, and
eagerness to learn, managers agree that
they need to further develop “the basics”
of soft skills, like conflict management,
communication, and relationship
building. Today’s young workers are also
increasingly likely to have significant
weaknesses in several key soft skills.
They have less experience working with
others and lack the exposure to build
these skills that are nurtured over time.
So, what are the soft skills necessary to
help Gen Z develop into future leaders?
Ten Soft Skills for Gen Z
Here is a list of ten soft skills, compiled
by members of the Forbes Coaches
Council, to help you create a learning
path and onboarding program to ensure
their success
1. Empathy
2. Ability to Influence Peers
3. Emotional Intelligence
4. Curiosity and Positivity
5. Active Listening
6. Humility
7. Communication Skills
8. Creative Problem-Solving
9. Resilience
10. Observation Skills
Source: https://thetrainingassociates.com/blog/soft-skills-gen-z/
Young people entering the workforce
are eager to contribute to a team and
organization. Providing the essential
soft skills will help them integrate into
the work environment and prepare them
to be future leaders of tomorrow. Take
advantage of this opportunity to ensure
your Gen Z workforce of learners is
offered a solid foundation of skills early
in their career – to build a professional
path to success.

On Saturday, February 9, Ms. Mediana,
Ms. Mutya, and Mr. Deden participated in
Teacher's Training titled "How To Make
Thinking Visible" by Hendro Widjaya.
He exposed the workshop participants to
various activities which helped them bring
their ideas into realization.
Ms. Medi along with Ms. Nani continued
on to the next training session "Showing
Students What Success Looks Like"
by Neil McRae.
Through this conference teachers gained
new insights on teaching strategies and
deeper understanding of education field.
On Saturday, February 9, Ms. Reni, Ms.
Mediana, Ms. Mutya, Ms. Nani, Ms. Nina
and Mr. Deden attended ANPS Teachers
Conference 2019 at Beacon Academy
Kelapa Gading Jakarta. The 1 st topic was
“From being stuck to making things stick:
teaching so students remember”.
They learned how emotion is a learning
process in itself and how human brain
worked to our way of thinking with ANPS
keynote speaker Dr. Ben Schmidt.
For the 2 nd session Ms. Reni continued
on individual training and learned the
strategies to teach special additional
needs students with Mr. Gareth Steed.
With Mr. Gaylord Anderson she learned
how to use mind mapping and other
strategies to enhance retention of
what has been taught.
For the last session Ms. Reni and
Ms. Mutya had sharing session on
how teachers need to build strong
relationship with students during
class meeting. It was important to
really get to know our students to
reach a successful learning process.
[ Games In Reading : A Teaser For Reading In Secondary Class ]
Ms. Darlina attended her 2nd ANPS
Teachers Conference 2019 at Beacon
Academy on Saturday, February 9.
Besides "Knowledge & Emotions" by
Ben Scmidt and "How To Include Humor
In Lesson" training, she also went on to
individual session of "Games In Reading:
A Teaser For Reading In Secondary Class"
Although it is quite challenging for
teachers to maintain and improve
motivation among Secondary Class
students, but through games and fun
activities (which are still a favorite
activity for everybody) we can get
objectives done with less work but
still learn a lot of things.

EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
ANPS Teachers Conference 2019 ANPS Teachers Conference 2019
[ Engaging Students’ Emotion for Better Learning and Better Being ] [ Reliability as a spectrum; How technopreneurs learn ]
On Saturday, February 9, Ms. Nani
participated in ANPS Teachers
Conference 2019 at Beacon Academy
Kelapa Gading Jakarta.
Aside from "Knowledge & Emotions" by
Ben Scmidt that she attended with all the
other teachers and "Showing Students
What Success Looks Like" by Neil McRae
she attended with Ms. Mediana, Ms.Nani
went to 2 other indivual sessions:
The 1 st workshop led by Ms. Amelia
Febriani., M.Si talked about what aspects
to consider in creating a lesson plan.
Beside paying attention to individual
learning style and keeping a fun
environment for learning, it is important
to tap into student's emotion in order
to create a lasting and meaningful
impression on their way of thinking
and character development.
The 2 nd workshop by Mrs. Cyntia was
about "How to Determine the Right
Learning Strategies for Children"
Through this workshop Ms. Nani learned
about the 'Cattell-Horn-Carroll Theory'
that described cognitive abilities profile
and 8 specific areas of cognitive abilities.
In order to determine the best teaching
and learning strategies in the classroom,
we need to:
1. Understand children’s individual
cognitive ability profile and group
behavior of children that are in
the same category
2. Understand age level
3. Evaluate learning activity
Overall, this event has been a valuable
learning experience.
On Saturday, February 9, Mr. Deden
participated in ANPS Teachers
Conference 2019 at Beacon Academy
Kelapa Gading Jakarta.
Aside from "Knowledge & Emotions" by
Ben Scmidt and "How To Make Thinking
Visible" by Hendro Widjaya. Mr.Deden
went on to 2 other indivual sessions:
The 1 st workshop was "Reliability as a
spectrum – A 21 st century skill, beyond
the classroom" by Periachi Periadevi
and Amanda Tan.
This workshop aimed to help students
further develop their analytical and critical
thinking in response to current issues
happening around the world.
Students were encouraged to investigate
resources such as newspapers, websites
or articles and determine their reliability
using 'reliability meter' method.
This skill is quite crucial for 21 st century
learners, as they are often exposed to
various resources that are not always
reliable in nature.
The 2 nd workshop "How Technopreneurs
Learn" by Fransiska Oetami (Co-founder
and principal of Clevio Coder Camp)
aimed to help teachers design fun and
engaging teaching activities through
games and technological devices.
This event helped me gain new insights
and strategy to apply in the classroom.

[ How To Include Humor In Learning ]
EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT
Professional Development Day
[ Sekolah Pelita Bangsa ]
There were sessions that discussed
and reviewed topics to improve
students' skills and character.
Other activities includes maintaining
teacher's motivation and teamwork
through team building games.
We believe this 'PDD' would bring
positive outcomes, not only for our
students, but also our teachers.
Sekolah Pelita Bangsa dedicated one
day of workshop on February 4, 2019
to enrich the quality of our teaching.
May this PDD further improve and
solidify our teacher's spirit, team
work and passion for education!
On Saturday, February 9, Ms. Nina
participated in ANPS Teachers
Conference 2019 at Beacon Academy
Kelapa Gading Jakarta.
Ms. Nina and Ms. Darlina were
participants of the 1 st workshop
presented by Mrs. Mansi Srivastava
about how to include humor in lesson.
Laughter leads to better learning and help
lighten the mood. When the students are
in a good mood, they tend to participate
more. She shared some strategies on
how to make lessons more interesting.
Ms. Nina continued on individual training
and attended the 2 nd workshop led by
Mr. Hugo and Mr. Pram who talked about
understanding the deliverance of digital
learning. It is important to prioritize the
learning aspect instead of the technology.
The 3 rd workshop by Mrs. Cyntia and
Ms. Made talked about enhancing
awareness in special needs students.
They emphasized self-awareness using
positive psychology approach such as:
1. Signature strength in learning
By encouraging the child's signature
strength, they would be more aware
and engage more in lessons.
2. Counting blessings
Simple way of counting blessing is to
write down 3 good things that happen
to ourself that day. It would recall
gratitude, well-being and self-potency.
