Rat workshops
held in Prairie
By Dedra Cordle
Katie Roush was certain she was still in
a dream.
It was late in the night when an urge to
quench her thirst roused the Prairie
Township woman out of bed. As she poured
her water into a cup, she noticed a shadowy
movement near the base of her
kitchen floor at the corner of her eye.
Drawn to the atypical disturbance, she
blinked once, twice, three times rapidly to
try to rid her mind of the vision of a foot-
Cap City Kidz, an educational arts production
company that specializes in
puppetry, brought a fun message on
serious topics to the students at Darby
Woods Elementary School on March 11.
The company, which is in its second
year, held two 45-minute presentations
at the school to address ways to deal
with bullying and make safer choices
when meeting strangers. Shown above
on the far left and right are co-founders
Frances and Tim Irvin, respectively, with
first grade students Khadijo Khalid and
Continued from page 1
long rat making itself at home in her dwelling.
“At first I thought that this can’t be happening, that
I was still in that dream state,” she said.
But Roush realized she was not dreaming.
“I backed my way out the kitchen and walked down
the hallway as quietly as I could, shut my door, put a
towel under it, grabbed my dogs and just sat on my bed
in a state of grossed out shock.”
After finally coming to the realization that it really
was a rat, she turned on her phone and got to work.
“I couldn’t sleep, so I immediately started researching
ways to get rid of them,” said Roush. “I texted my
husband and told him to bring as many rat traps home
as he could, then I called Orkin and told them to come
out as soon as they could. After they came out and told
me I had entryways into my house, I bought concrete
mix, silicon caulk, boards, anything.
The Prairie Township resident then ordered ultrasonic
pest repellers.
“I wanted them out, I wanted them gone and I
wanted them to stay gone.”
In the weeks after her first incident in February of
last year, she found seven rats total — five outdoors and
two indoors. Fortunately for Roush, she has not
encountered any more rats since fortifying her home
but the same cannot be said for many other people living
in the area.
Since being made aware of the growing rat infestation
problem last summer, the township has been collaborating
with Franklin County Public Health
(FCPH) to try to get a foothold on the issue.
“It’s not a quick fix; it’s going to be a slow process,
but we’re trying,” said Zoning Inspector Connie
Swisher.
One measure the partners have taken is to establish
a Rat Prevention and Elimination Workshop,
which is a free educational program for the community.
There, the residents learn how to identify entry
points, take steps to fix them and the means that can
be used to eliminate them. The first session was held
on March 19 with roughly 45 people in attendance.
One identifying feature of a rat problem on your
property, said Sarah Fink, a mosquito management
and vector programs specialist with FCPH, are burrow
holes under brush or alongside the foundation.
“They want to feel protected and having burrows in
these places make them feel right at home,” she
explained.
Since burrows can often be used by other animals
such as snakes or chipmunks, she suggested crumpling
up a piece of paper, placing it in the hole and
monitoring whether the paper has been displaced.
“If it is, the chances are that you have an active rat
hole.”
She suggested patching up any possible entry
points — even the easily overlooked openings like dryer
vents — with silicone caulk or steel wool and wire.
“The steel wool and wire are good options, but I
have to mention that rats can chew through hard
materials,” said Fink.
She said if fortifying the foundation, be sure to put
any sheeting at least two feet into the ground. As for
homes, she recommended rat traps with greasy, protein
rich foods like peanut butter, bacon, and Slim
Jims. She did warn the residents that they are dealing
www.columbusmessenger.com
residents more opportunities to talk with
council members about what is important
to them and how council can help. All members
of the community are encouraged to
attend. For more information, contact
Kevin McCain at 614-645-5829.
with highly intelligent and suspicious animals.
“It may take them a few days to feel comfortable
going up to investigate,” Fink said.
She said rodenticides can be used, but be mindful of
who or what is also living in your homes.
“If you have small children or pets, be aware of the
risks,” she said. “If a dog eats a rat that had been poisoned,
they’ll have eaten a rat with poison in it. You’ll
have to take them to the veterinarian or an emergency
animal hospital to be checked out.”
She also went over other elimination suggestions,
such as dry ice in burrows — she warned not to use
these close to the foundation as you do not want CO2
coming into your home — as well as clove oil and Coca-
Cola in burrows.
“Those haven’t been proven scientifically but some
people said they have found success with those methods.”
Fink did not, however, recommend live traps.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” she said. “You run
the risk of catching a pathogen and then you have to
think about where you would release it. I mean, how
many people would be happy if they saw you release a
rat near their property?”
She also said if you are facing an infestation, only
licensed, professional help from a pest control specialist
will do.
The issue of trash left out in bags was discussed at
the workshop, especially after the public health representatives
said to use alternative means, such as thick
plastic or sturdy metal cans.
Residents said they feel the elimination of bags left
on the curb for collection, or just outside in general,
could greatly quell the rat problem.
“We cannot allow people to keep leaving garbage
bags out,” said one resident. “It’s disgusting and
attracts rats, among other things. I’ve seen them chewing
through them on multiple occasions.”
Swisher said she and Township Administrator Rob
Peters have discussed the collection issues but said it
was ultimately up to the trustees to make that decision.
During this discussion, one resident mentioned
commercial trash and faulty bins, to which Swisher
said they were also trying to address.
Due to the scale of the problem, the workshop will
be held for the community twice more in April, once on
the 1st at 1 p.m. and once on the 3rd at 6:30 p.m. It will
be held at the Prairie Township Hall, 23 Maple Drive.
Swisher said she hopes that the community will
attend the workshop and learn more about prevention
and elimination topics and then spread the word
amongst their families, friends and neighbors.
“We all have to do our part to combat the issue,” she
said. “It’s not going to take a small handful of people to
do it, it’s going to take all of us.”
As for Roush, who attended the workshop, she said
she still has lingering paranoia about her rat
encounter one year ago.
“I’ve done what I can but I still have this fear that
I’m going to come home one day and they’re chilling in
my kitchen, eating crackers,” she said. “I don’t want
that to happen, so I have to stay vigilant and make
sure my house isn’t attractive to them.”

Community concerned about speed cameras
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
As Franklin Township cracks down on speeders in the area,
several residents are taking issue with the new processing, saying
the township has turned into a speed trap.
Late last year, Franklin Township introduced a new handheld
camera system that allows them to more efficiently enforce speed
limits and reduce traffic accidents. Using the handheld cameras,
deputies have been positioned at high traffic areas where there
has been increased speeding and accidents. Among these locations
is Frank Road.
However, several residents have expressed concerns about the
new ticketing process, saying they are being unfairly targeted, and
the township is using the new system as a way of generating revenue
and not protecting residents.
Franklin Township Police Chief Byron Smith said this couldn’t
be further from the truth.
“We have two major complaints - drugs and speeding,” Smith
said. “We only have so many tax dollars to work off of and this new
system allows us to use our resources in the most efficient ways
possible. We have the highest overdose rate in the county and one
of the highest in the state, this new system allows us to focus on
these issues even more.”
Smith said on average it takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes
per traffic stop. By using a camera system during peak speeding
hours, the township is able to stretch their resources further
because officers are eliminating time on traffic stops.
The handheld camera system is used by one officer during the
school hours, which is peak speeding time, according to Smith.
Typically, the township has four officers on first shift, four officers
on second shift and three officers on third shift.
Residents are ticketed for going 10 miles per hour or more over
the speed limit, according to Smith. Several residents complained
about getting tickets for going slightly over the speed limit, something
Smith and township leadership adamantly deny.
“The township has never issued a citation for any less than 12
miler per hour over the speed limit,” Smith said. “If anyone is getting
a ticket for going less than 10 miles over the limit, please contact
me because that means there is an issue with our system. Our
system is setup to not send tickets to anyone for going less than 10
mile per hour over the speed limit.”
Trustee John Fleshman echoed this saying he would love to see
if anyone has gotten a ticket for going less than 10 mile per hour.
Township selling properties
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
Franklin Township is unloading some
property they have accumulated in an
effort to bring more funds into the area. At
a recent meeting, the board of trustees
approved the sale of several properties.
Realtor Laura Esterline gave an update
to the board about the sale of properties
the township currently possesses due to
unpaid taxes. Among these properties was
the sale of 1439 Little Avenue and the parcel
at 867 Hart Road.
The township reduced the price for the
home on Little Avenue and accepted an
offer of $34,900 and accepted an offer for
$32,000 for the parcel on Hart Road.
Also, at the meeting, the board discussed
the need for more security at township
hall.
“I would recommend we have better
security in our building,” said Bryon
Smith, police chief for Franklin Township.
“When someone leaves, we have to replace
keys. If we have a digital locking system, it
will be easier to deal with security when
we have turnover.”
Trustee John Fleshman said he recommended
some sort of badge system where
employees can scan a badge to access the
building.
Smith, as well as Franklin Township
Road Superintendent Jim Stevens agreed
to examine this more and present options
to the board in an upcoming meeting.
In other news, the board discussed
offering township employees Hepatitis A
and B vaccines.
The township plans to partner with Mt.
Carmel Hospital and setup booths to give
employees the vaccines in the coming
weeks.
“If someone can show me a ticket they got for going less than 10
miles per hour, I will pay it myself,” Fleshman said. “Speeding is
a big issue in this township and we have had multiple deaths as a
result of it. We need to address this safety issue.”
However, Fleshman said they are not enacting this new system
in an effort to generate more revenue.
“If we never write another ticket again and everyone goes the
speed limit, we would be happy,” Fleshman said. “We started
using these cameras to protect residents and have been transparent
about this entire process.”
The township has issued more than 3,800 tickets from
December 2018 to mid-March 2019. This has resulted in approximately
$104,000 in revenue for the township. As of mid-March,
these funds were broken up and distributed to the general fund,
road department, police department and a scholarship fund.
“Sixty percent of the received fines goes to the police department.
This money helps with equipment and manpower to address
the other major complaint we have,” Smith said. “Ten percent of
the money is diverted to roads, 2 percent of the money received is
put away for a scholarship fund for graduating seniors at Franklin
Heights and 28 percent of the money received goes to the general
fund to be used for community projects.”
According to Smith and Fleshman, community projects could
include a new community center for the region, sidewalk additions
or improvements, creating another community garden or sponsoring
more community clean-ups.
Each speeding ticket is priced at a flat $100 fee, according to
Smith. This, he said, is lower than the average speeding ticket in
Ohio, which starts at about $140 and goes up with an increase in
speed.
“After receiving a ticket, a person has 30 days to contest it or
pay it,” Fleshman said. “A magistrate will hear arguments for
tickets and determine
if the person
should pay the ticket,
have the ticket
reduced or thrown
out.”
monitoring system,
GOOD
By Josh Jordan
Staff Writer
A non-profit company, comprised of Ohio State University students,
is trying to make an impact on the small businesses of the
Hilltop.
Ascent wants to make that difference through lending, financial
education and advising using the resources of Ohio State.
Colin Caniglia is the CEO of Ascent and a sophomore at OSU
studying chemical engineering. He presented Ascent’s plan to the
Greater Hilltop Area Commission.
“A lot of people are distrustful of financial institutions,” said
Caniglia. “Our goal is to try to bridge that gap, be completely
straight forward and transparent with our process and try to give
as much aid and help that we can to small businesses.”
These services are not just for the Hilltop. The company’s mission
is to reduce financial inequality in all of Columbus, but they
are focusing on areas with the highest inequality including the
Hilltop, Franklinton and Linden.
“How can you trust a college student who’s coming over here to
lend money to small businesses?” asked Caniglia. “We have a
board of directors that is very competent and we model our organization
off of other organizations who have done this well in other
cities.”
The board of directors includes a professor at the Fisher College
of Business at OSU, an employee of the Boston Consulting Group,
and the owner of a small business lending institution in Nashville,
Tenn.
Local leaders have agreed to continue a popular program aimed
at recognizing service members. At a recent Prairie Township
meeting, the board agreed to continue the Military Hometown
Hero Banner Program.
The program is a tribute to recognize Prairie Township residents
and graduates of Westland High School who are serving, are
veterans or died in the line of duty while serving the United States
Armed Forces.
“The program
started last year and
honors local residents
who have severed
our country,”
said Rob Peters,
Non-profit offers aid to small businesses
Ascent’s lending program focuses on micro-loans of $500 to
$5,000 with an annual percentage rate between 4 and 8 percent,
much lower than most small business loan options.
“Our target customer is a small business owner that would go
to other financial institutions, a credit card, or a bank to get their
means for funding,” said Caniglia. “We are a non-profit, so our goal
is help as many small businesses as possible to avoid lenders.”
Their team of advisors has been helping businesses in other
communities but is now making a push to receive applications for
assistance from the Hilltop.
“The goal of our advisory team is to use Ohio State as a
resource,” said Emily Hovis, a business advisor at Ascent. “We
take students who have skills in special areas that businesses
need help with, and we pair them up.”
Their advisory services can vary from financial advising to website
design, a project Hovis just finished up with a Linden business.
Ascent also offers financial education courses and has teamed
up with the Westgate Community Recreation Center and the
Greater Hilltop Area Shalom Zone to host these classes. Residents
can contact Ascent or the host sites for more information.
The commission seemed optimistic about the program and welcomed
the business to the Hilltop.
“I think what they are trying to do is great,” said commissioner
J.D. Groves. “But I hope they can take it a step further and identify
and approach businesses in the community with a specific
need.”
Township honors Hometown Heroes
Peters said. “The actual cost to create the banners was $109, so I
recommend we adjust the price to reflect the actual cost.”
The board agreed to hang up to 45 banners in 2019, as well as
make this price adjustment. However, they did make some exceptions
for residents.
“I think if someone participated last year and isn’t making any
changes to their banner, we should rehang those banners at no
cost to them,” said Steven Kennedy, township trustee. “I also think
we should continue to give participants the banners after we take
them down.”
Last year, the township kept the banners up during the warmer
summer months and took the banners down when the weather
started to change. The township is planning to display the banners
from May to August.
The banners will continue to be hung on street lamps on West
Broad Street in the township and will include the service member’s
name, image, military branch and rank.
“The spots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis,”
Kennedy said. “Currently, there are about 14 spots available.”
There are three different types of banners participants can get
- an active duty, veteran and memorial banner. An active duty
banner is designated with a blue star, the veteran banner has a
white star and the memorial banner has a gold star. Memorial
banners will be designated for those who have died in the line of
duty.
This year, the township also hopes to create a walking tour
guide with photos and information about those honored on the
banners.
“We would like to have this guide on the township’s website, as
well as in the township office,” Peters said.
For those who can’t afford a banner, but want to recognize a
service member, the township will be collecting donations to pay
for banners for families that cannot afford them. Residents also
can sponsor a specific banner if they desire.
Nominations for banner recognitions are due April 1. For more
A bi-monthly feature celebrating the
wisdom, experience and contributions of our community’s senior citizens
Senior citizens are frequent targets of scammers
Fraud is a massive problem for older
Americans.
A report recently released by the U.S.
Senate Special Committee on Aging estimates
they lose an incredible $2.9 billion a
year to financial exploitation schemes and
scams. Seniors are targeted by foreign and
domestic criminals who want to rob them of
their hard-earned retirement savings.
They are being exploited by strangers over
the phone, through the mail, and online.
Unfortunately, the committee notes, far too
many seniors are targeted by family members
or by other people they trust.
Older adults are most vulnerable to
fraud within three years of suffering a life
altering event such as loss of a loved one,
illness or while facing an imminent foreclosure.
Scammers scour various sources
gathering this information and approach
the victim offering comfort and solutions to
their problems.
Beware of phishing emails used to collect
usernames, passwords, Social Security
numbers, and other personal information.
No legitimate organization will ever ask for
your password or other personal information.
The benefits of aging
Many people think of growing older in a
negative light.
Although there are some side effects of
aging that one may wish to avoid, people
may find that the benefits of growing older
outweigh the negatives.
Seniors are a rapidly growing segment
of the population. With so many people living
longer, it’s time to celebrate the perks
of getting older rather than the drawbacks.
Here are some benefits to growing old.
•Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of
youth give way as one ages, and older people
have less negativity and higher selfesteem.
Qualities like self-control and
altruism can contribute to happiness.
•Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to
discounts on meals, museum entry fees,
movies, and other entertainment if they’re
willing to disclose their ages. Discounts are
available through an array of venues if one
speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel
perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane
tickets and more.
•Reasoning and problem-solving skills:
Brain scans reveal that older adults are
more likely to use both hemispheres of
their brans simultaneously something
called bilateralization. This can sharpen
reasoning skills.
•Less stress: As people grow older, they
are able to differentiate their needs from
wants and focus on more important goals.
This can alleviate worry over things that
are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize
how little the opinions of others truly
mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling
less stress about what others think of
them.
Growing older may involve gray hair or
wrinkling skin, but there are many positive
things associated with aging.
Are You Considering Moving To A Smaller Home?
Are you considering moving to a smaller home or maybe one that is more “senior friendly”?
Have the hardships of Ohio winters made you vow to never shovel another snowy
sidewalk? Studies have shown that more than 85% of adults over 65 would like to stay in
their home as they age. What you have to examine carefully is whether the decision to stay
put is practical and feasible.
To Move or Not to Move
Deciding to stay at home or move to a more supportive environment can be a difficult and
emotional decision. Older adults who relocate usually do so as a result of retirement, the
loss of a spouse or health changes.
If you are a homeowner and are considering moving, here are some points to consider:
• Does your house need major work in the next few years (a new roof, windows or doors,
furnace, exterior updating)?
• Will the layout accommodate you as you get older? Are there too many stairs and no
main-floor bathroom?
• Does the community lack the resources you need, such as adequate health care,
shopping and public transit? Accessible public transportation is vital to independent
living. Could you stay in your current home if you or your spouse could no longer drive?
• Is there smaller, less expensive but suitable housing in your neighborhood, so you can
remain near friends and relatives?
“Ask yourself many questions about the physical practicality of the house and of your plans
to stay in it,” says Toronto author P.J. Wade in Have Your Home and Money Too (John Wiley
& Sons, 1999).
“As you age, so does the house. Will it age well? What do you really love about living there?
Make a list of your needs and desires. Could you satisfy those needs and desires and
perhaps others as well with other housing?”
Assess the cost of major repairs and modernizations that may become necessary over the
next 10 years. These upgrades – and any resulting increases in property taxes – must be
factored into your budget when you’re deciding whether to stay or move.
“As we age, services become more important,” Wade goes on to say. “Assess your chosen
community and the variety of services it has to offer when you are analyzing whether to age
in place.”
Making Due with Less
It isn’t always feasible to move a lifetime of memories with you. With proper planning, you
can be sure to select the most meaningful items and eliminate the rest. If you haven't used
something in a year or two decide if you really need it. It may be more difficult to part with
collectibles, so concentrate on paperwork. Consult your tax adviser to see how long you
must keep tax records and receipts and toss everything else. If you continue to store your
children’s belongings years after they have moved out, ask them to help you pare these
down to a few precious items.
Tips for purging the excess:
• Hold a garage sale to get rid of extra belongs and earn cash to help may finance your
move.
• Consider working with a consignment shop to sell gently used items.
• Donate items to family, friends and charity --- particularly nontraditional charities that
service fire victims, immigrants or the homeless.
• Consider holding an auction to sell furniture or large items of value.
Explore all Your Options
Many options are available if the escalating cost of homeownership is a primary reason for
your move.
• Inquire about government programs that may help relieve the financial burden. In
Franklin County property tax payment plans allow older and low-income homeowners to
establish payment arrangements that fit their budgets and possibly leave more income
for daily living. Call the Franklin County Treasurer’s office at (614) 525-3438 for more
information.
• You may qualify for home renovation grants or loans to help with needed repairs. For
more information call the City of Columbus at (614) 645-8526 or your city’s development
department.
• Using the equity in your home to make needed repairs or modifications might also be an
option. Check with you current mortgage lender or the Better Business Bureau for tips
on selecting these services.
Moving a houseful of memories can be overwhelming, but careful planning can offset much
of the stress. Seek advice from other seniors who have recently moved. View this as
another adventure to add to your impressive list of lifetime achievements.

Crafting an effective cover letter
A strong cover letter may not
guarantee you land a good job,
but a poor cover letter may guarantee
you won't. On its own, an
effective cover letter can catch
the eye of hiring managers
tasked with finding worthy candidates
among stacks of applications,
while a poor cover letter
may ensure hiring managers
never even glance at an applicant's
resume.An effective cover
letter should be concise, conveying
an applicant's work history
and goals in a few paragraphs or
less.
The following are some additional
ways men and women can
craft effective cover letters:
• Address a specific person when
possible.
• State your purpose early on.
• Explain why you are a qualified
candidate.
• Exhibit some knowledge about
the company to which you're applying.
• Be cordial in your closing
An effective cover letter can go a
long way toward making a
strong first impression on a
prospective employer. Men and
women should look at their cover
letters as their first opportunities
to connect with a company
and write their letters accordingly.
Update your skills in a secure job industry
The last several years have seen a series of
economic ups and downs. Managing careers
amid such instability has been challenging
for many individuals, but professionals looking
for more security can take steps to find
careers that promise more long-term stability.
Focusing a job search on industries that have
shown strong growth and the ability to ride
out waves of economic turmoil can tip the
odds in your favor. Certain industries have
better long-term employment outlooks than
others, and men and women looking for more
stability should consider these industries
when pondering their next career moves.
Accounting
Thanks to ever-changing financial policies
and greater scrutiny placed on lending practices
and bookkeeping, accounting jobs remain
solid career choices. Jobs in accounting
can range from entry-level to more advanced
(and more lucrative) positions requiring certification
or a secondary education.
Medicine
Financial health does not safeguard people
against illness, and health services are
needed regardless of the state of the economy.
That makes medical careers some of the most
coveted and stable around. Healthcare professions
can be lucrative, and careers in medicine
are not restricted to doctors or nurses.
Clinicians, medical imaging personnel and
medical laboratory technicians
also are needed. The
Make sure your resume doesn't cost you a job
Many a night's sleep has been lost
worrying about an upcoming job interview.
Questions like "Will I make
a good impression?" or "Am I qualified
for the job?" can make for a
restless night's sleep on the eve before
a job interview.
Writing a resume is another aspect
of the job hunt that can stoke your
nerves. Men and women may pour
over job timelines and skill summaries
for hours in an effort to ensure
they have included the right
mix of information to get noticed.
Though resume writing has
changed considerably over the
years, some conventional wisdom
about resumes still prevails, and
how closely potential applicants adhere
to these rules goes a long way
toward determining if they earn a
chance at an interview.
* Me, myself and I: While the resume
should showcase your professional
accomplishments, it also
should showcase how your skills relate
to the job you're applying for.
This way the company understands
you have researched the position
and are in tune with what they're
looking for in an applicant.
* One document for all responses: A
resume is not a static document. It
needs to change depending on the
job you're applying to. Although
there will be certain information
that can remain the same, update
the skills and other information
based on each position.
* One page is best: Applicants were
long told to keep their resumes concise,
limiting the document to just
one page. However, if your experience
is extensive or one page cannot
contain a long job history, don't be
afraid to submit a two-page resume.
* Failing to be selective:
You need
not include your
entire job history
on a resume, especially
if certain
past positions you
have held are
completely irrelevant
to the position
for which you
are applying.
Don't be afraid of
job gaps, either.
Many of today's
recruiters understand
that the changing economy
can make it challenging to maintain
steady employment.
* Overembellishment: Do not embellish
your skills. Always be open
and honest on your resume. You
may be asked to prove you can perform
certain tasks, and if you cannot
back up what is included on a
resume, you will have wasted your
time and the time the interviewer
spent discussing his company's
opening with you.
* Imperfections: A resume is a reflection
of you, so one with typographical
errors or a poor layout is
never acceptable. Ensure your resume
is as professional and errorfree
as possible. Have a friend or a
proofreader look it over before distributing.
* Paid positions: Internships or volunteer
work are perfectly acceptable
to include on a resume,
particularly for younger applicants
who may not have a wealth of professional
experience. Include a mix
of information on the resume that
will reflect your versatility.
wardrobe transformation
without breaking the bank,
the fashion experts at Marie
Claire advise adding separates
to build around a base
suit. Find a suit that is flattering
to your figure and
make it a workplace staple.
Then purchase coordinating
pants, sweater sets, shirts,
another skirt, and accessories
that can be mixed and
matched with elements from
the suit to create different
looks. If your budget allows,
purchase another suit in a
different color so you can continue
to build wardrobe possibilities.
When selecting base pieces,
opt for neutral colors of tan,
gray, black, and blue so that
these items can be worn repeatedly
without being noticed.
Accessories and blouses
can offer pops of color when
necessary. A nice
handbag or pair of
shoes can quite easily
add color to an otherwise
monotone ensemble.
When selecting items
from the rack, look for
those that fit well but
aren't too constrictive
or racy. Inquire with
your new employer's hiring
manager or human resources
department to find out if the
workplace has any restrictions
on wardrobe. There
may be employee guidelines,
particularly in certain industries,
such as law or education.
If no such restrictions
are in place, keep skirts to
knee-length and avoid particularly
low-cut tops. Save
more revealing items for
nights out with friends.
Many employers have
adopted dress-down days as
perks for their employees. Although
you may be invited to
dress more casually, avoid
dressing for a day at the
beach or hanging around the
house. Opt for trouser-style
jeans that are free of rips and
embellishments. If athletic
shoes are allowed, make sure
they are clean and not the
pair you wear while tending
to your garden. Avoid graphic
T-shirts that feature potentially
offensive or suggestive
messages. In more conservative
companies, dressing
down may be opting for
khakis instead of suits. It is
important to know the difference.
Pets of the week
Jennifer is a 10-year-old collie looking for a
quiet retirement home. She does have arthritis
in one knee and will need to find a home
where her family is knowledgeable about her
condition and can help her thrive. She may not
be able to chase a ball like she used to, but
she still has tons of love left to give. Jennifer is
available for adoption at the Franklin County
Dog Shelter.
FYI: 614-525-3647 or www.franklincountydogs.com
Arthur has been at the shelter since February.
He’s a 4-year-old puppy, eager to take long
walks with you and then cuddle up on the
couch and watch TV. Arthur is easy going and
prepared to meet his forever family and leave
the shelter behind. Adopt him from the
Franklin County Dog Shelter.
FYI: 614-525-3647 or www.franklincountydogs.com
Sugar Cookie is a lovely gal. She came in
from a rather rough life on the streets with an
eye injury. Cookie lost her eye but is getting
along just fine without it and is really looking
forward to a home of her own. She would do
best as an only cat in a quiet home. Cookie is
available for adoption through Colony Cats
and Dogs.
FYI: www.colonycats.org
These furry friends are
available for adoption
at local rescues and
shelters
Champ is a 2-yearold
beagle mix who
loves to play with
other dogs. He loves
toys and snuggling
on the couch. Champ
enjoys going for
walks and car rides.
He was kept tethered
all the time by his
previous owner so Champ can be a little shy
around people when you first meet him. The
good news, he warms up quickly. Champ is
up for adoption through Colony Cats and
Dogs.
FYI: www.colonycats.org
Donny (aka Spazzy)
is a young man who
is looking for his forever
home. When he
was a kitten, he used
to be full of so much
energy, he was nicknamed
Spazzy. He is
shy when you first
meet him but he
warms up quickly. He enjoys cuddles and
chasing his brother and sisters. Donny needs
some space because he is a big boy. He is
good with other cats and older kids. Snap up
this sweetie and adopt him from Friends for
Life Animal Haven.
To cap off the end to another successful
season on the hardwood, the Special
Olympics basketball coaches in the
South-Western City Schools District held
the first skills competition on March 6.
For more than an hour, the athletes who
played on the Special Olympics basketball
squads at Central Crossing, Franklin
Heights and Grove City High School
showcased their talents at specialized
events such as the Spot Shot, Speed
Dribble, 3-Point Shot and Target Pass.
Erin Henschen, one of the coaches at
Franklin Heights, said judging from the
reaction of the athletes and their fans,
they hope to make this skills competition
an annual event. Here were some of the
scenes captured during the competition.
Top right, The cheerleaders from Franklin
Heights had much to cheer about.
human life after aliens win
community events
The thread of hope in the aftermath of
an extraterrestrial attack is predominant
in invasion movies. In most, if not all of
these films, the humans overcome insurmountable
odds by successfully fighting off
these technologically advanced beings and
then come together to rebuild a more perfect
world. With the latest product in this
disaster sub-genre, however, that thread is
burned and there is no hope to be found in
the cinders.
In “Captive State,” we witness the aftermath
of an invasion where the aliens have
won. Brief clips of news footage shows a
valiant fight after the initial event, but the
humans falter in the face of a more
advanced species. To lessen the threat of
complete annihilation, the governments of
the world reach a treaty with the aliens
wherein they work for them in exchange
for the promise of “human unity.”
In the years since the signing of the
treaty, government leaders and their families
and friends have profited immensely
by creating surveillance networks to catch
any suspected unity dissenters. Gone are
the days when people would willingly
share their private lives and in its place is
a hyper-surveilled state where every single
moment of your life is tracked and monitored
by the police, the government and our
apparent alien overlords.
Income inequality has also reached its
highest levels to date (the film is set in the
“near” future) and the less fortunate work
for minimal gain with little hope of upward
mobility. Among those in the latter wealth
bracket is Gabriel Drummond (Ashton
Sanders), a teenager who lost his mother
and father during the initial invasion, and
most recently his brother, who was one of
the leaders in a defeated underground
resistant movement known as Phoenix.
Because of his familial ties, Gabriel is
more vigilantly monitored but he takes
risks here and there because of his desire
for a better life. While trying to make a little
bit more money on
the side one day, he
discovers that news
reports of the demise
of Phoenix have been
greatly exaggerated.
Now, he has to decide
whether to follow in the footsteps of his
elder brother Rafe (Jonathan Majors) and
fight against the aliens and their government
supporters, or eke out a life under a
state of hyper-surveillance and unequal
rule.
“Captive State” is a film that mines elements
from previous invasion movies while
also making it feel relevant to today’s
world and original in the world movie. The
problem is there are too many ideas and
not enough coherence to follow them
through. While Gabriel is technically the
main role in this film, it splinters into
points-of-view from a cop of dubious loyalties
(played by John Goodman) and various
members of Phoenix as they try to pull off
an attack. While these POV’s are interesting
— if you ever wanted to see how “terrorist”
cells work, this would be the film to
watch — they create a muddling effect with
the overall movie, making it feel far more
tedious than it actually is.
If you’re looking for an alien invasion
movie that is action packed and full of
witty repertoire, “Captive State” is not it.
In fact, there is barely any humor or levity
to be found within. But if you’re interested
in seeing a movie in this sub-genre that is
original albeit muddled, it might be worth
a watch in the future on a streaming service.
