THE BARRY family has
two new life members and a
president following Tuesday
evening’s Canterbury Boxing
Association annual general
meeting.
When Tim Barry was announced
as the association’s new
president, he stepped into a role
both his parents had previously
held. To make the occasion more
special, his first job as president
was to present a life membership
to his mother Myra Barry.
“It was lovely, his father would
have been so proud of him,” said
Mrs Barry.
She also accepted a life
membership award on behalf
of her son Kevin Barry, who is
currently training Joseph Parker
in Las Vegas. They join Tim and
the late Kevin Barry Snr as life
members, leaving just Bryan
Barry, who is a strong candidate
to receive the honour in the
coming years.
“Four out of five is not bad,”
she said.
Mrs Barry’s commitment
to boxing included being the
secretary, treasurer and president
of the Canterbury Boxing
Association, and vice-president
of the New Zealand Boxing Association.
Games could have made him
more than worthy of a life
membership many years ago.
However, the occasion was saved
so it could be announced alongside
his mother and brother’s
honours.
While Kevin couldn’t be
there to personally accept the
award, he has passed on his
congratulations.
“I’ve had Kevin on the phone
today saying how proud he is of
me for stepping up and doing it,”
said Tim.
Mrs Barry believes Tim will
excel in his new role, with boxing
flowing in his veins from a
very young age.
“His first trip to a boxing tournament
was when he was three.
He was dressed in his whites and
carrying the water bottle,” said
Mrs Barry.
As a life member, she says she
may have to start gracing more
bouts with her presence.
“I just go to the occasional
tournament these days. Now
that I’ve been made a life
member I might have to go to a
couple more,” she said.
GONE: Canterbury Country and Canterbury Metro’s annual
Craw Shield match won’t take place this year due to an
extended Canterbury B season. PHOTO: KAREN CASEY
No country competition
• By Gordon Findlater
CANTERBURY Country and
Canterbury Metro will not clash
for the Craw Shield this year after
a decision was made to scrap the
two representative teams.
The Canterbury Country
Rugby Sub Union made the decision
at a recent board meeting to
scrap both their senior and colts
rep sides this year. It’s understood
the same applied for the
Canterbury Metro senior team.
The contributing reasons for
the decision is an extended Canterbury
B season.
Canterbury Country have also
moved Ellesmere and North
Canterbury’s Southbridge Shield
and Munro Shield matches to
later in the year as opposed to
July and are finding increasing
difficulty in obtaining sponsors
and gaming machine funds.
Canterbury Country sub
union secretary Murray Dulieu
described the board’s decision as
“facing reality.”
“I’m disappointed and I
think a number of the player
and supporters will be as well.
Canterbury Country has been
around from a long time, so I’m
pretty disappointed, but it’s the
decision,” said Dulieu.
This means Canterbury Country’s
long-standing traditional
games against Otago Country
and Southland Country won’t
played this year.
Canterbury Country will still
have under-16 boys, under-18
boys and under-15 girls rep
teams, which will compete at a
South Island tournament.
In previous years, the annual
Craw Shield match between
Canterbury Country and
Canterbury Metro has been
used as a final trial match for the
Canterbury B side. However, due
to a newly-extended programme
this year, the Canterbury B side
will be selected by the end of the
club season.
