On Mondays there’s a weigh and pay steak evening (from 6.30pm), on Tuesdays it’s pensioner's specials all day. Wednesdays is Mediterranean cuisine at the Pig (with the normal menu available) and on Thursdays you can build a gourmet burger evening. Fridays there are always meal specials on offer and on Sundays it’s the Pig’s famous roast lunch. Specifically for visitors to the show, on Friday April 5 they will have music with Peter Drennan, while the next day, on Saturday April 6 there is lunchtime music with Claude Samuel. On the evening of April 19 there will be music with John and Charlie. Don’t miss out on the Stock Market Pub Party on the evening of March 29. For reservations call 046-625-0673 The Ploughman Pub is situated in the grounds of the Historic Bathurst Agricultural Museum, adjacent to the showgrounds. First established as a member’s pub for the volunteer folk who built the museum, today it is a warm meeting place for interesting Bathurst locals and visitors alike. A cosy eclectic inside bar or a spacious outdoor area is available for you to relax, unwind and let the lay lines run through you (you are aware that Bathurst is the centre of the universe, right!). There is also Pike’s Post, a large old-school, barn style venue available for functions. The Ploughman Pub also has a daily menu, Friday special, and Sunday is braai-day. March 28, 2019 ADVERTISING / NEWSDESK: (046) 624 4356 Find us on Facebook Talk of the Town 15 Historical society celebrates year of achievement 60th birthday celebrations among highlights This has been a year of achievement for the Lower Albany Historical Society (LAHS). The organisation recently celebrated its 60th birthday and refurbishment of the Toposcope beacon in Bathurst is almost completed. As outgoing chairman Heather Howard reported at the recent AGM, this restoration has been a remarkable community effort, with funding from the LAHS itself, Rotary Port Alfred, Historic Bathurst, the Lions and a family of settler descendants. Not only has the original design been followed, but extra cairns now display the names of chiefs and a king who were in the region at the time of the 1820 Settlers’ a r r i va l . Howard paid special tribute to Dave Hawkins “whose hard work, enthusiasm and faith in this huge project never wav e r e d ”. LAHS members, whose numbers increase each year, have enjoyed regular outings including a trip to historic sights of Grahamstown, a visit to Bathurst to inspect the new work at the Toposcope and at the Agricultural Museum as well as at a Christmas picnic. There was also a fascinating weekend in Cradock led by the redoubtable Bugs Wilmot. Speakers have talked on old wrecks, Clumber Church restoration, Rhodes University history, a trip from Hogsback to Healdtown, and a favourite speaker Bartle Logie ser ved Toasted Marshmallows and Obies, the title of one of his popular books. After the AGM’s elections, having served three years in the chair, Heather Howard handed over the baton to the new chair Gwynn Crothall who will head the same team of executive committee members: Delia Bava, Joy Billing, Sue Gordon, Suzette Grist, Dave Hawkins, Heather Howard, Avonne Pickering, Sally Poole, Margaret Snodgrass, Yvonne Surtees and Doug Sutherland. After the meeting, in the guest spot was a “regular”, Professor Pat Irwin, who is writing a book about the very significant Battle of Grahamstown. With illustrations, he filled in the background and then described in graphic detail the two hours of fighting which took place there almost 200 years ago to the day, in April 1819. Members of the LAHS meet monthly on the third Thursday of each month, either in the Don Powis Hall at Settlers Park to hear a guest speaker, or to enjoy an historical outing.
