We need to reconnect to Source of Life
An alarm goes off in the middle
of the night, not activated by an
intruder, but serving as a
warning that the battery level is
l o w.
This is caused by the
continual power outage. If our
“spiritual battery” ever gets low,
we need to take heed of the
warning signs.
The Bible is no longer seen as the
source of our daily bread and is left far
too often on the shelf to gather dust.

General valuation
open for objection

Members of the Ndlambe Ratepayers Forum (NRF) met
with the general valuation service provider and
Ndlambe municipal officials last week.
The following was forthcoming from the meeting:
The general valuation has been completed and is
available for inspection and objection.
Valuations have been performed using recognised
valuation methods with the comparative sales method
being used predominantly where possible. This would
include all the residential properties and vacant land.
Commercial properties are valued by capitalising the
expected incomes based on information provided to
the valuers by various owners and property managers.
These incomes were capitalised using the yield
expected by investors.
Properties that have little to no sales, such as
schools, churches and hospitals, are valued using a
depreciated replacement cost.
Anybody can object to a property’s value, but this
must be done for each individual property on the
prescribed form. Each objector and property owner will
be notified of the outcome of the objection.
Any errors, over and above the objections, will be
corrected by the valuators through supplementary
valuations as required. This is necessary to provide the
affected ratepayers with the opportunity to object to
the new value.
In Port Alfred, there were some calculation errors in
the West Beach Drive, Greenmantle Drive and Francolin
Road areas and these are being addressed.

Source of Life and pursue spiritual
growth. “Never be lacking in zeal, but
keep your spiritual fervour, serving the
Lord” (Romans 12:11).

K9 Hero Rescue –
why everyone
should be involved

Our first experience of a retired service dog was with a nervous
ex-service dog who came to retire at Retreat 2 Eden.
As we began to understand her, we realised just how great the
need is to be involved in K9 Hero Rescue. Some service dogs
retire due to physical reasons, some emotional and some due to
old age. Most of them cannot simply be rehomed the minute
they retire. A bridging programme is needed to prepare them for
life in a “normal” environment.
These K9 Heroes lay their lives down daily to protect you and
your family – to track down criminals, sniff out drugs and
explosives, rescue people, guide people, track and take down
poachers and follow leads at crime scenes – all areas where
humans would fall hopelessly short in.
These dogs have not asked to be there, yet they sacrifice
themselves daily to be of service to mankind. For this reason, it
is not only the service dog industry’s responsibility to see that
these dogs have a good retirement – it is every one of our
responsibility to give back to these dogs at the end for their
years of service to us.
It was with this in mind that Retreat 2 Eden began the K9 Hero
Rescue bridging programme.
Upon arriving at Retreat 2 Eden, a K9 Hero is assessed in
terms of personality, emotional and physical well-being. Once
settled, the process of retraining the dog begins to facilitate
adjustment to a normal environment – this includes socialisation
and emotional assistance while living within a family unit of
humans and dogs. When the K9 Hero is ready to be re-homed,
the screening of a potential home begins where the right home
for the K9 Hero is chosen.

If you look very carefully at the shops on the right of
the picture with this weeks’ column, you can almost
see that only the facades have changed.
In the years 1960 onwards, the shops started to
modernise, removing water troughs and hitching
posts. There were still areas where wagon’s could park
around the market square.
The roads too, were mainly sea sand, which is the
underlying, shifting base, even today.
