Dear reader,
One year has passed in the blink of an eye. Since the inauguration, it has been an incredible journey
of growth, challenges and successes for the young Centre for Global Citizens.
In this first year, our Co-chairs Ban Ki-moon and Heinz Fischer and our Board members ably led
the activities spanning from Seoul to New York, from Oslo to Johannesburg, from Beijing to
Bahrain and from Vienna to Montevideo. We have reached far more than 200.000 people via our
social media activity, have actively introduced the work of the Centre to thousands of people, have
inspired hundreds and supported women and future young leaders while working tirelessly to
build our programs, forge meaningful partnerships and secure funding for the years to come.
So why do we do this? Why is it important to focus on global citizens?
Today the world is more connected than ever. We are bound together by global developments and
are confronted with challenges that affect us all. The Sustainable Development Goals are an important
depiction of that.
However, today only few leaders actively live and act with the full understanding of the implications
of this global interconnectedness - too scarce is the understanding of our shared fate as citizens of
this fragile planet.
In times of rising nationalism and populism, short-term thinking and the expectation of immediate
gains, we must do our utmost to curtail these developments and to grow and foster our future
leaders. How do we do that? With education, advocacy, leadership and mediation to support future
leaders who are truly engaged global citizens, surpassing local and national interests with a global
perspective and understanding for complexities of the challenges we face. This is imperative for all
global citizens and we believe women and youth have a special role to play in this.
Therefore, let me thank all those who are with us on this journey, as none of our work would be
possible without the support of our partners and funders. We need your inspired and generous
leadership and we thank you all for your commitment to our common goal of promoting global
citizenship.
