Of course that’s not exactly how it happened. Back in the ‘70s, Porsche was headed in a different direction. They needed a modern car to replace the aging 911 and to keep up with emission regulations. They wanted a new flagship vehicle with the best possible combination of a sports coupé and a luxury sedan. The result was the 928, a grand tourer with a water-cooled V8 engine. Porsche’s first production V8-powered model and the only coupé powered by a front-mounted V8 engine. The 928 was loaded with technological advances and luxurious features. It won the coveted 1978 European Car of the Year award upon introduction. It was priced far above the 911 SC ($110k vs $75k in today’s dollars). Just 57,998 928s were built during the model’s 19-year production run (25k of which came to the US).
