EDITORIAL<br />
Can we stay curious when the heat is rising? Rokia Traoré, Guest Director of this<br />
month’s Brighton Festival, suggests we try. Rather than knee-jerk react, take whatever<br />
steps we need to stay calm and open. Find things we have in common – also, then,<br />
wherever possible, celebrate differences.<br />
Wise counsel, applicable in any setting? Don’t shut down, in fear and anger, she says, but<br />
hang on to your (dictionary definition no. 1) ‘strong desire to know or learn something’.<br />
(Definition no. 2 is the other sort of curiosity – ie ‘an unusual or interesting object or<br />
fact’ – which Michael Blencowe embraces with vim, via the <strong>Lewes</strong> toad of 1898…)<br />
I found plenty to be curious about in this issue. Did you know, had Charles I worn<br />
disposable nappies, his first one would probably, just about now, have biodegraded?<br />
Have you ever heard of a ‘Knotty Object’? (Over to Dr Rob Phillips…) Ever wondered<br />
what goes on behind closed doors of the rabbit warren that is Star Brewery? (I have.)<br />
Do you have the slightest idea how researchers at Herstmonceux Observatory Science<br />
Centre might spend their days? Our ‘The way we work’ portraits may – or may not! –<br />
enlighten.<br />
Perhaps you personally knew maker and teacher Ralph Levy, of The Handmade House,<br />
who sadly died suddenly in January. This month sees a retrospective of his work. While<br />
Chloë King bows out – of <strong>Viva</strong>, and <strong>Lewes</strong> – with a beautiful piece looking back on her<br />
(nearly) whole life spent in the town.<br />
