Striking shakshuka
The Towner Gallery have taken over from Urban Ground
in running their own café, and we’re pleased to report that
the food on offer is strikingly strong. The location on the
second floor of the building is fantastic, with floor-to-ceiling
windows offering plenty of natural light, as well as a view of the Downs in the distance.
I tried a loose leaf Earl Grey, which was subtly fragrant (supplied by the Brew Tea Company, £2.40 for
a large pot), and my guest enjoyed her Ginger Beer with Chilli (supplied by Brackland Orchard, £2.30).
The meals were where the café really impressed, however. My shakshuka – baked egg in a spiced tomato
and pepper sauce – was delicious at only £4.25. I recommend having the dish with chorizo for an extra
pound, since it adds a complementary oily tang to the rich tomato flavour.
My dining companion remarked that her smashed avocado on sourdough toast with pul biber pepper
flakes and olive oil (£5.50) was nice and lemony, with a good, non-slimy consistency. She also loved the
crispy bacon that she added on for one pound.
If you’re considering cake and snacks rather than the brunch menu, the café offers an impressive range.
Our almond croissant (£2.40) was chewy and sweet, the date flapjack (£2.50), nice and mapley, and the
brownie (£2.50), thickly chocolatey. Joe Fuller
