ON THIS MONTH: THEATRE True Copy Subversive and enigmatic Photo by Koen Broos True Copy explores the nature of authenticity in art through the story of Geert Jan Jansen, in a Brighton Festival show at the Attenborough Centre. Produced by Belgian theatre group Berlin, director Yves Degryse tells me that Geert was known at the time as the “master forger of the century”. Jansen had been producing forgeries for 25 years before being discovered in 1994 after a spelling mistake in one of his certificates alerted the authorities. Picasso himself unwittingly provided a certificate of authenticity for one of Geert’s creations. The seeds for True Copy were sown in Berlin’s 2014 work, Perhaps All The Dragons. Geert was one of thirty people interviewed in filmed monologues: audiences could select five of the stories to watch in a one-on-one performance around one round table. Geert and Berlin then discussed making a new project together, to explore his story further. “[In True Copy], we made the choice to put him on stage in the way he [worked] during those 25 years, which means without any other voices. Which means he gets the time and the space to tell the story. For Geert it’s about the hypocrisy of the art market. There are many art galleries who knew what he did. “He lived in a castle in France: he had 18 different rooms there. He had one room for Picasso, one room for Matisse, and so on. This was his ideal way to work. So we made replicas of three of these studios. There, you can see him working. He explains how he does these forgeries. He also agreed that we could sell one of his forgeries per evening.” An opportunity to buy a famous forgery is just one atypical aspect of the subversive and enigmatic show. Yves is keen to preserve some mystery about the performance, but is happy to reveal that there is live camera work on stage that documents the work in the artist’s studios. He is keener to discuss the themes of True Copy, such as Geert’s thoughts on how someone’s perception of a painting changes when they learn it’s a forgery. “Why is the truth so important? You stand in front of a painting by Van Gogh in a museum, and you are touched by it. Then somebody whispers in your ear that it’s not the real Van Gogh, it’s a forgery by Geert Jan Jansen. The value, your emotional value decreases, the financial value decreases, everything decreases actually, the moment you know it’s not the real one. Why is that? If an expert says it’s the real one, can we accept it as the real one then?
