New format for Combined
Country rugby competition
Sports reporter Jacob Page looks at how the new format for the Combined Country
rugby competition will affect teams
ELLESMERE RUGBY teams
will kick off a new, shortened
Combined Country competition
format on Saturday.
The structure was signed off by
all three sub-unions, including
Ellesmere rugby manager
Michael Sheat.
The 22 teams from across
Ellesmere, Mid-Canterbury and
North Canterbury have been
split into three
pools based on last
year’s rankings
and geographical
balance.
The aim is to
prevent teams
Michael
Sheat
playing three
games in eight
days like they
did last year,
while also ensuring club rugby
is completed before the start of
August.
There are eight teams in pool
A, with seven teams each in
pools B and C.
Each team will play seven
round-robin games before the
playoffs start with the quarterfinals.
Teams in pool A will play the
seven other teams in their group,
while teams in pools B and C
will play six games against teams
in their own group, plus one
The top two teams in each
pool will progress to the quarterfinals,
with the final two wild
card teams decided by which has
the most competition points out
of the remaining 16 teams.
The Combined Country final
will be played on June 1.
After the final, each sub-union
will break into their traditional
club competitions, with
Ellesmere teams competing for
the Coleman Shield.
WITH SENIOR country rugby
kicking off, here’s how the
Ellesmere teams are shaping up
ahead of the season
•Waihora
Waihora will look to replicate
their stellar season last year,
which saw them win both the
Combined Country trophy and
the Ellesmere competition.
Co-coach Joff Mooar said
he expects his team will have a
target on our backs.
“We’re not being complacent
. . . the trophies may be in our
cabinet but they’re only on loan,”
he said. “We had 18 debutants
that we put through last year
and have only lost four of last
year’s squad.”
Mooar said the return of
utility back Leon Simpson would
give his team added depth and
some speed.
Ellesmere representative Matt
Saunders will offer plenty at
either centre or first-five.
Mooar said there will be
some fresh faces in the forwards
PROVIDES:
INSULATION
playing for the B side last season.
He said the pack will rely on
the loose forward combination
of Will Hurst and Tyler Koning
once again, especially with the
retirement of 290-game stalwart
Gareth Pietzner at the end SHOWERS of last
season.
Darfield were runnersup
in last year’s Ellesmere
competition, and new backs
coach Kris Rogers believes they
can get their hands on some
silverware this year.
“We have four sets of
brothers in the squad this
year, but we also have a good
mix of youth and experience,”
he said.
