Defensive
game fails to
prevent loss
• By Jacob Page
SELWYN UNITED will look to
rediscover their attacking mojo
at home against FC Twenty11 this
Saturday after a 2-0 loss to Cashmere
Technical in the Mainland Premier
League.
After beating
Nomads 6-4 in the
opening round a
fortnight ago, it was
the attacking third
which failed to fire
for Chris Brown’s
side.
“A couple of
Chris Brown
errors in defence led to us conceding
goals but it was the forward third that
just didn’t click for us,” he said.
“We usually have one game like
that a season so hopefully it’s out of
the way now.”
With the second round game
against Ferrymead Bays cancelled,
Brown said the defensive plans were
used against Cashmere Technical a
week later.
“I thought defensively we were far
more organised and worked hard.
“THe boys were high on confidence
after the first win . . . but I think they
can stand up and be happy with how
they played against Tech but also we
know we missed a chance to get some
points.”
Brown praised his two centre
backs, Jack Allatt and Jayden Booth
for their commitment in defence.
Leeston-Southbridge take title
A MASTERFUL innings
by Rupert Young steered
Leeston-Southbridge to the
country cricket one day title on
Saturday.
Leeston-Southbridge’s opening
batsman Young read the
conditions perfectly at Rangiora’s
showpiece ground,
Mainpower Oval in making a
composed unbeaten 81 runs,
earning him man-of-the-match
honours in the 79-run win over
Southbrook.
The heavy loss continued
Southbrook’s woeful record
in championship games, with
still just the 2011/12 title in its
clubrooms trophy cabinet.
Southbrook won the toss
and elected to bowl first in the
much-anticipated CRV Ambreed
Country Premier One
Day Competition final.
Brook seamer Alex Simpson
got rid of Canterbury A batsman
Joel Harden cheaply
before Sam Ermerins – who
enjoyed the best season of his
career – ripped through the
combined side’s quality top order.
Ermerins claimed the key
scalps of Harry and Ben Chamberlain
along with ex-Dutch
international Tim Gruijters,
before Darryn Boyle knocked
over Ben Donkers, reducing
them to a precarious 72/5.
Meanwhile, Young was batting
serenely at the other end,
and soon had much-needed
help from Liam O’Sullivan who
SPORT
made a handy 49 off 68 balls.
Canterbury Country batsman
Young – younger brother
of Central Stags star and fringe
Blackcap William Young –
carried his bat throughout the
Leeston-Southbridge innings,
making 81 not out off 114 balls
to lift his team to a solid 225/7
in their 45 overs.
At the change of innings, the
’Brook, with its powerful top
order, were comfortable to be
chasing 226 runs to win the
title.
But they got off to a horror
start when Matt Brine was
involved in a mix-up with
fellow opener and skipper
Tom Rodden and he was
run out third ball of the
innings.
It was the first of three runouts
in the Southbrook innings
on a day where Leeston-
Southbridge’s fielding was of
the highest order.
The match appeared to
hinge on the partnership of
Canterbury opening batsman
Jack Boyle and Canterbury l
egend Shanan Stewart, who
came together with the score at
1/2.
After a cautious beginning,
SELWYN TIMES
SUCCESS:
Leeston-
Southbridge
were crowned
Canterbury
Country
Premier one
day champions
at Mainpower
Oval, Rangiora,
on Saturday.
the pair were soon finding the
gaps and the boundary with
regularity.
Boyle was dismissed for 31
when he shuffled down the
pitch to Donkers and was
bowled off his pads, bringing
Simpson to the wicket.
Simpson and Stewart put on
68 runs before they fell in quick
succession to the off-spin of
Gruijters.
The ’Brook then collapsed
spectacularly to be all out for
146 in the 38 th over, sparking
jubilant scenes as Leeston-
Southbridge celebrated a welldeserved
trophy.
