ring to report a local fire in a rural area
you will be asked your RAPID number,
so that the appropriate fire service can
be alerted.
At certain times of the year, there will
be restrictions on lighting fires. Ring
the SDC on 347 2800 or check on the
council website www.selwyn.govt.nz/
fire to check before lighting any fires.
The following steps will protect your
home and family:
• Avoid outdoor activities that generate
heat or sparks
• Remove waste from sections, around
homes and in gutters and drain pipes
• Plant drought resistant and less
flammable plants
• Cut lawns and paddocks during safe
periods
• If appropriate, maintain a reserve
water supply
• Connect a garden hose for
immediate use
• Prepare a home inventory, keep
important documents in a safe place
• Install smoke alarms
• Make and practice a home escape
plan
• Designate a family meeting place
• Signpost your property clearly with
your Rapid or street number
• Maintain clear access routes for
firefighting appliances

Leeston bus service could be axed

A TRIAL bus service could be
pulled due to low patronage.
Environment Canterbury said
its Leeston to Christchurch route
has had low usage since the trial
started in late January.
The bus leaves Leeston at 7am
and returns at 5.50pm on weekdays
and averages 28 passengers
a day.
ECan senior public transport
manager Stewart Gibbon said
unless patronage rises, current
passenger numbers are not high
enough to continue the service
long-term.
“We saw strong support from
the Leeston community for a
commuter service during the
survey process late last year. We
encourage the community to
make good use of the route now
so that it can be extended,” he
said.
Leeston Community
Committee chairman Lloyd
Clausen urged more people to
take up the service but also said
not everyone is able to use the
current bus.
He said the current service
does not accommodate all
residents.
