Fire<br />

In all emergencies phone 111. If you<br />

ring to report a local fire in a rural area<br />

you will be asked your RAPID number,<br />

so that the appropriate fire service can<br />

be alerted.<br />

At certain times of the year, there will<br />

be restrictions on lighting fires. Ring<br />

the SDC on 347 2800 or check on the<br />

council website www.selwyn.govt.nz/<br />

fire to check before lighting any fires.<br />

The following steps will protect your<br />

home and family:<br />

• Avoid outdoor activities that generate<br />

heat or sparks<br />

• Remove waste from sections, around<br />

homes and in gutters and drain pipes<br />

• Plant drought resistant and less<br />

flammable plants<br />

• Cut lawns and paddocks during safe<br />

periods<br />

• If appropriate, maintain a reserve<br />

water supply<br />

• Connect a garden hose for<br />

immediate use<br />

• Prepare a home inventory, keep<br />

important documents in a safe place<br />

• Install smoke alarms<br />

• Make and practice a home escape<br />

plan<br />

• Designate a family meeting place<br />

• Signpost your property clearly with<br />

your Rapid or street number<br />

• Maintain clear access routes for<br />

firefighting appliances<br />

Leeston bus service could be axed<br />

A TRIAL bus service could be<br />

pulled due to low patronage.<br />

Environment Canterbury said<br />

its Leeston to Christchurch route<br />

has had low usage since the trial<br />

started in late January.<br />

The bus leaves Leeston at 7am<br />

and returns at 5.50pm on weekdays<br />

and averages 28 passengers<br />

a day.<br />

ECan senior public transport<br />

manager Stewart Gibbon said<br />

unless patronage rises, current<br />

passenger numbers are not high<br />

enough to continue the service<br />

long-term.<br />

“We saw strong support from<br />

the Leeston community for a<br />

commuter service during the<br />

survey process late last year. We<br />

encourage the community to<br />

make good use of the route now<br />

so that it can be extended,” he<br />

said.<br />

Clausen urged more people to<br />

take up the service but also said<br />

not everyone is able to use the<br />

current bus.<br />

He said the current service<br />

does not accommodate all<br />

residents.<br />
