Die Schlange City: Berlin Planning: Poligonal Office for Urban Communication Client: N/A Status: Ongoing Learning from the Everyday The Berlin-based agency Poligonal has set itself the goal of bringing some of the more forgotten aspects of urban development and planning to the attention of urban society – on foot and with an interdisciplinary focus: “Alternative views of the city – unexpected observations and unforeseeable encounters constitute a political and democratic act for us!” And not only are urban phenomena and neglected architectures pointed out, but also architectural-historical experiments and utopias, such as the infamous motorway construction Schlangenbader Straße in Berlin. Experts and residents share their opinions and stories, give insights into their everyday lives and deal with prejudices: the previously uninteresting becomes a source of inspiration and new ideas. The Swiss sociologist and self-proclaimed pedestrian-scientist Lucius Burckhardt considers breaking down barriers of everyday perception and their associated stigmas to be an essential prerequisite for a meaningful co-creation of the urban environment. The founders of Poligonal also emphasise the educational aspect of their work: “City expeditions help in gaining a new understanding of unknown life worlds, bringing different actors together in conversation and opening up new perspectives. Such experiences are the essential foundation for an informed participation in the production of the city!” Vom Alltäglichen lernen Die Berliner Agentur Poligonal hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, unterrepräsentierte Themen der Stadtentwicklung und -planung ins Bewusstsein der Stadtgesellschaft zu bringen – zu Fuß und mit interdisziplinärer Ausrichtung: „Der alternative Blick auf die Stadt, das Zulassen von unerwarteten Beobachtungen und unvorhersehbare Begegnungen stellen für uns einen politischen und demokratischen Akt dar!“ Ergangen werden nicht nur urbane Phänomene und unbeachtete Architekturen, sondern auch baugeschichtliche Experimente und Utopien, wie zum Beispiel die verhasste Autobahnüberbauung Schlangenbader Straße. Expert*innen und Bewohner*innen kommen zu Wort, geben Einblicke in ihren persönlichen Alltag und rücken dabei festgefahrene Vorurteile zurecht: Scheinbar Uninteressantes wird so zur Quelle für Inspiration und neue Ideen. Die Alltagswahrnehmung aus ihren Schranken zu befreien, betrachtete schon der Schweizer Soziologe und selbst ernannte Spaziergangswissenschaftler Lucius Burckhardt als wesentliche Grundvoraussetzung für eine sinnhafte Mitgestaltung der Umwelt. Auch die Organisatoren von Poligonal betonen den edukativen Aspekt ihrer Arbeit: „Stadtexpeditionen helfen, unbekannte Lebenswelten besser kennenzulernen, bringen unterschiedliche Akteur*innen ins Gespräch und eröffnen neue Sichtweisen. Solche Erfahrungen sind für uns ein essenzielles Fundament für eine informierte Teilhabe an der Produktion von Stadt!“
