32 digital transformation Engineering 4.0 und die Wirklichkeit von Modellen Engineering 4.0 and the Reality of Models „Modelle sind des Engineerings Kern“ ist wohl eine Aussage, der jeder Fachmann zustimmt. Modelle begleiten den Engineering-Prozess von der Anforderungsanalyse über erste Designentwürfe und Simulationsmodelle bis hin zu physischen Modellen und Prototypen. Die fortschreitende Digitalisierung dieses kreativen Prozesses und die Verfügbarkeit gewaltiger Rechenkraft verändern dabei die Rolle von Modellen: Modelle treiben zunehmend das Engineering (vor-)an und etablieren sich als die eigentlichen Engineering- Objekte. Modelle und die physischen Produkte gehen hier eine neue Koexistenz ein: Produkte werden anhand von Modellen realisiert und über ihren Lebenszyklus von ihrem digitalen Zwillingsmodell begleitet. Die Harmonisierung der aktuellen Modellierungspraxis über den gesamten Lebenszyklus und unter Einbeziehung aller teilnehmenden Stakeholder ist ein wichtiger Schritt, um hier neue, integrierte, modellbasierte Engineering-Prozesse zu etablieren. Gerade darin liegt aber eine der größten Herausforderungen jenseits von technischen Problemen, wie Austauschformaten, Schnittstellen oder Tools: Modelle werden stets in einem spezifischen Kontext eines Produktes und Projektes erstellt. Um die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den unterschiedlichen Stakeholdern zu unterstützen, müssen Modelle also ausreichend Kontext- und Hintergrundwissen über ihren Lebenszyklus hinweg vorhalten. Im Workshop „Modellbasiertes Engineering in der Luftfahrt“ des Bauhaus Luftfahrt mit seinen Partnern wurden weitere Herausforderungen identifiziert, die in weiterführenden Diskussionen und Kooperationen analysiert werden. Das Verständnis der aktuellen Veränderungen im digitalen Engineering in der Luftfahrt sowie der Konsequenzen und Potenziale ist ein wichtiger Schritt auf dem Weg zu einem Engineering 4.0. Engineering 4.0: Verschmelzung von Modell und Produkt Engineering 4.0: Melting model and product + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + “Models are at the heart of engineering”, as every practitioner would immediately agree. Models are accompanying the engineering process from requirements analysis over first design sketches and simulation models to physical models and prototypes. Today’s proceeding digitalisation of this creative process and the availability of immense computation power are changing the role of models: models are increasingly becoming the basis and the heart of engineering – they emerge as principal engineering entities. Models and the physical products are in a new coexistence along their lifecycles: products are realisations of models and are accompanied by their digital twin model. Harmonising the state-of-the-art modelling practice, techniques, and tool chains over the whole lifecycle is crucial to accomplish a well-integrated, model-based engineering process and to involve all participating stakeholders along the lifecycle. Here, the real challenge lies beyond technical obstacles, such as interchange formats, interfaces, and tools: Models are built and updated in a context specific to a given project and product. Therefore, they should provide substantial context and background knowledge supporting the collaboration of stakeholders along the entire lifecycle. After organising a first well-received workshop on “Model-based engineering in aviation” with our partners, we are looking forward to continue discussions in subsequent events in order to analyse the identified challenges. Understanding the ongoing step-change in digitalised aircraft engineering, its consequences and potentials is the crucial first step towards an Engineering 4.0.
