Laurent Fédou Winemaker BIODYNAMICS SHINE WORLD OF ORGANIC AT CHÂTEAU WINES PRÉ LA LANDE Château Pré la Lande has the WOW! factor CANARD DUCHÊNE PROMOTES ITS “AUDACIOUS CREATION” AT VINEXPO 2019 A key winemaker for Alain Thiénot since 1985, when the latter took over Canard Duchêne in 2003, Laurent Fédou was tasked with breathing new life into the longestablished brand. We asked Laurent to tell us more about his adventure in Champagne, and in particular the introduction of organic wines with Cuvée P181 Extra Brut. In 2003, Alain Thiénot asked me to bring Canard Duchêne up to more contemporary and modern standards than the style it had at the time. We created a number of new products, the first being the Cuvée Léonie, made in homage to the founder of the company, Léonie Duchêne. It’s a wine destined to restaurants and specialist stores. Among my contacts in Champagne, I had several friends who were organic winegrowers, and over the years, I pondered over the organic wine phenomenon, trying to understand it better, and in 2009, we launched the first organic wine of the Canard Duchêne brand, to underline the fact that we were audacious and modern, and to ‘brush the dust’ off our name. What are the difficulties in making an organic wine in the Champagne region? The main issue with the grapes is keeping tabs on the mildew, which requires a great deal of vigilance. It is also necessary to have good relations with one’s neighbours, because if they are not organic, they must respect the work of those who are. In terms of the wine elaboration process, we have not changed anything at all. Is the taste any different? That’s always a big question. I can’t say whether it does, but in any case, the blend of our Cuvée P181 is very different from our other wines, which is what makes it so distinctive. What would you say are the “key selling points” of Cuvée P181 Extra Brut? Firstly, it’s the purity of the wine, which is quite fresh. It is an extra brut, which gives it that pure and tonic feel. It has quite a lot of intensity… and of course, it is organic, and has also been certified vegan, as this had been another concern of consumers Hall 1 / Stand E139 Organics, biodynamics, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the four dominant factors that help Château Pré la Lande stand out from the slopes of one of the signature hills that are such a distinctive feature of Bordeaux’s Gironde wine producing region. Situated in Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux, one of the oldest appellations in the region, Château Pré la Lande, works with its predominantly limestone clay soils to make strong, expressive wines with deep colour. Château Pré la Lande, which has been producing wine since 1860, relies on those years of blending experience when bringing different plots of Cabernet Franc and Merlot together for its main wines. The Château is also responding to the threat of climate change by introducing some plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec that will also help it bring more aromatic wines its range. It also has one plot of Sémillon. The influence of the Dordogne river is key in this area of the Gironde, helping to control and create a mid climate. Michel Beaucé Château Pré la Lande Organic, and increasingly biodynamic, viticulture has been at the heart of everything that Château Pré la Lande has done since the property was taken over by Michel Baucé in 2004. It uses, for example, herbal teas and liquid manures, taken from different plants, to create its own unique bio Bordeaux mixture that it uses to work the soils and vines, all based on the lunar cycle. Highlights of Château Pré la Lande’s new biodynamic range are part of the World of Organic Wines section at Vinexpo. These include Diane, and TerraCotta, both Cabernet Franc and Merlot blends, and Cuvée des Fontonelles, a sweet Semillon wine. One of the standout features at Château Pré la Lande is how it uses traditional amphora pots and egg-shaped tanks made from Italian terracotta, that allow in small levels of oxygen which help bring out even more expression in some of its wines during ageing Hall 1 / Stand W281 vinexpodaily.com VINEXPO DAILY / DAY 4 / THURSDAY 16 TH MAY 2019 9
