With a little creative thinking, you can transform a room’s decor without picking up a
paintbrush.
I hate painting, but I love change.
I love making a room look new and
fresh. It keeps the house from seeming
stale. Sometimes I’ll convince
myself that painting isn’t so bad.
After all, it’s a lot more fun if you
have family or friends who can help.
But, by the time I’ve gotten part of
a wall taped off, I remember how
much I loathe the monotonous work.
Painting and I just aren’t meant to
be. That doesn’t mean I can’t get the
new-room feel I’m going for though.
There are plenty of other ways to
spice up any room of the house and
make it into something new without
breaking your back or your budget.
access to outlets that you don’t want
to move, but that doesn’t mean everything
needs to stay exactly where
it is. Be brave! It’s a lot easier to put
a few pieces of furniture back than it
is to repaint an entire room.
One of my favorite bedroom arrangements
was when I placed my
bed diagonally in the room, with the
headboard in a corner. I was able to
set up two nightstands on each side
of the bed and still be able to use
each side. My bedroom was large
enough that the bed didn’t overpower
the space, and it looked so unique
in the new placement that it gave my
entire bedroom a fresh vibe.
Rearrange Furniture
The most dramatic way to make a
room look and feel completely new
is to rearrange the furniture. I don’t
mean move the couch 2 inches to
the right. Move it to another wall
or angle it catty-corner if you have
the space. Experiment with putting
each large piece of furniture in a
different spot in the room. You might
be surprised by what arrangement
works for you. Sofas and entertainment
centers aren’t glued to the floor.
Many homes have mounted TVs or
Bring in Light
Lighting can have a big impact on
any space. Dim lighting can make a
room feel intimate or romantic. Bright
lights make a space feel cheerful and
energizing. Some rooms you want
less lighting and some you don’t.
Cooking in the dark probably isn’t the
type of exotic cuisine you want, and
neither is turning your bedroom lights
on early in the morning and having
the light scald your eyes.
Utilize the light that is available
organically through windows or
skylights. You can do this by changing
the style of blinds or curtains that
you use. You may want heavier curtains
or a shade in your bedroom to
block unwanted sun for late sleepers.
On the other hand, light curtains and
blinds that can be easily raised for
the living areas allow natural light to
fill the space. Recessed lighting can
provide extra glow without interfering
with clean lines or causing clutter.
It’s amazing what a little light can
do to change the energy in a room.
Change Accessories
One of my favorite ways to change
up a room is by rotating out accessories.
I love seeing themed bathrooms
in my friends’ houses during
the holidays or throughout different
seasons, but hand towels and soap
dispensers aren’t the only items you
can rotate through. Artwork is often
one of the more prominent accessories
in the room — drawing the eye
with a statement piece or decorating
a wall with family photos. Updating
wall art gives the room an entirely
new look without a drop of paint.
Also consider updating bedding,
couch pillows and rugs. Try out different
color schemes or patterns to
see what fits your mood. Bring out
matching (or mismatching) candles,
change up picture frames or update
curtains. You’ll feel like you’ve entered
a whole new house.
The best part about redecorating is
that you don’t need a massive overhaul
to see a big difference. Little
changes that are within your budget
can make any room feel new. Try
adjusting just one room to see how
it makes you feel. You can even take
elements from one room and see how
they become completely different in
a new room: curtains from the bedroom
to the living room, pillows from
the spare room to the master, colored
bottles from the kitchen to the bathroom;
the options are endless. If you
still feel the desire to reach for the
paint cans, I applaud you. However, I
think you’ll find you can get the same
new-room experience by making just
a few changes within the room. Either
way, love and enjoy your space.
There truly is no place like home. ª
ON THE SUBJECT OF...
Hurricane Season
The 2019 Hurricane Season Begins June 1
A new hurricane season will begin
June 1 and last until Nov. 30.
It seems like we just ended the hurricane
season for 2018. For the
Orlando area, we escaped hurricane
activity last year; however, we
still have those memories of Sept.
11, 2017, when Hurricane Irma paid
us a visit.
For 2019, the projection for the
number of hurricanes is five to seven
compared with a prediction of 10 hurricanes
in 2018. But even with the lower
number, there is risk. In 1992, they
predicted a quiet hurricane season,
and that’s the year Hurricane Andrew
hit South Florida.
In 2018, Hurricane Michael hit
the Florida Panhandle, causing major
destruction. This storm formed
rather quickly after it left the Yucatán
Peninsula and headed up the Gulf
of Mexico. It slammed into Mexico
Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base as
a Category 5 (recently upgraded from
data gathered after the storm). It was
the first Category 5 hurricane since
Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Now is the time to get ready for the
upcoming hurricane season. The following
tips can help you prepare:
• Visit with your insurance agent
and make sure your homeowners or
renters policy is up-to-date. Verify
there are no gaps in your coverage
and check your replacement costs for
your dwelling and its contents. Be sure
to ask what your hurricane deductible
is so you can be prepared in case you
have damage.
• Check to see if you have flood insurance.
Your standard homeowners
and renters policies do not cover flood
or rising water. There is a 30-day waiting
period on flood insurance unless
your home is newly purchased or it is
required by mortgage.
• Make family arrangements in case
evacuations are necessary. Make a
checklist of items to take, including medications,
cash, important papers and your
checkbook, if you have to leave. Also,
think about arrangements for your pets.
• If you have a survival kit, check the
expiration dates on those items. If you
need to establish a survival kit, some items
to include are food, water, a first-aid kit,
blankets, a flashlight, batteries and some
cash. Most ATMs will not be in operation
during an emergency situation. ª
A new exploration about the NASA
space program was recently launched
in Central Florida, making cinema history
to kick off the 28th Annual Florida
Film Fest held at the Enzian Theater in
Winter Park.
Woman in Motion, which sold out
its three scheduled showings, is a fulllength
documentary about the courageous
campaign run by Star Trek’s
Nichelle Nichols to bring more
diversity into the NASA space program.
The documentary boasts the
local connection of being directed by
Todd Thompson, and Vince Scuro
served as executive producer. Both
men are Southwest Orlando residents
and longtime friends who saw the film
as something that needed to be shared.
“The film works on multiple levels:
it talks about civil rights, it talks about
women in the workplace, it talks about
the space shuttle program, it talks
about science fiction with Star Trek,”
Vince said. “There is something for
everyone in this film.”
Film in Motion
The idea for Woman in Motion
originated from the courageous journey
Nichelle, who portrayed Star
Trek’s original Lt. Nyota Uhura, made
beginning in 1977 when she learned
NASA was struggling to fill astronaut
positions in the then-new space shuttle
program. Having an interest in space,
Nichelle asked NASA the epic question
of, “Where are my people?”
since all astronauts at that time were
white males from the U.S. Air Force,
and she was equally challenged by
NASA to find recruits of all races,
sexes and cultures interested in flying
to space.
The result was her program, Women
in Motion, and her efforts for more
than four months led to more than
8,000 applicants applying to NASA,
which brought forth the first African-
American, Asian and Latino male and
female astronauts. They weren’t pilots
but scientists, teachers and from other
professions.
Nichelle’s 400-page report about
her program was what Todd and his
local Stars North production company
used to create the documentary,
guiding them to sources for footage,
interviews and the overall perspective
FEATURE
Making Movie History!
Locally Made Film Is a Hit at Film Festival
of how groundbreaking Nichelle’s efforts
were.
“The story really wrote itself, quite
honestly, and what is beautiful is
Nichelle published her final report to
document her travels, and that literally
became the blueprint for our story,”
Todd said.
His team quickly went to work in
locating people to interview (such
as Nichelle herself), visiting NASA’s
library to borrow actual launch film
footage, and producing re-creations
of key moments in the program’s history.
Vince’s lengthy career in film
production in Orlando meant he
was Todd’s go-to person for not only
advice and getting props for the recreation
scenes, but also finding hardto-locate
film footage.
“We spent a lot of time just hunting
down footage, such as an appearance
on Good Morning America of
Nichelle in June 1977 that wasn’t easy
to find,” Vince said. “Her final report
was our source to find out where was
she during her travels for the campaign,
which is where we found her
appearance on GMA.
“We kept running into closed doors
until a Hail Mary came, and someone
came through with the footage.”
The projected date for the documentary’s
release was to coincide with Star
Trek’s 50th anniversary in 2016, but
missing the deadline actually allowed
History at Florida Film
When the Florida Film Festival
reached out to Todd about Woman
in Motion, the original plan was for
it to be part of a spotlight vignette.
However, hours later, the request was
sent for Woman in Motion to premiere
as a first-look showing on the festival’s
opening night. That led to three soldout
screenings and rave reviews by
audiences and critics alike.
“The response was incredible, and
I’m still getting complimentary emails
from people who saw it,” Todd said.
“It’s also the first time in Florida Film
Fest history that the opening night
movie sold out three showings. I think
it was a great opportunity to get the
audience’s reaction to the film.”
Vince added that audiences weren’t
expecting the $4K-quality film and
Skywalker Sound-produced sound
mixing that Woman in Motion offers.
“Theatergoers were blown away
by the film quality and sound, which
were the main reactions I got from
people,” he said. “I think Todd and
the team have elevated what documentaries
are supposed to be. It’s not
just historical tell-all; it’s a ride and an
experience.”
The plan is to release the film in
theaters worldwide, but its appearance
at the film festival allowed Todd,
Vince and Stars North to tinker with
the film a little more before presenting
it to national and international
audiences.
Both agreed though that what
Woman in Motion depicts most of all
is the belief that anyone can make a
difference in the world — like a film
actress with an interest in space wanting
to see diversity in the skies.
“You don’t have to be a pilot or a
scientist to make things happen, as
Nichelle shows,” Todd said. “As long
as you stick to your beliefs and are out
to do something good, you will prevail,
and Nichelle proves that.” ª

The Best
Things are heating up for another
summer season, and, thankfully, the
new Bruster’s Real Ice Cream in
Windermere is there to keep things
cool and very tasty.
After officially opening last month, the
Bruster’s location, owned and operated
by Anna Wytiaz, brings ice cream,
yogurt, sorbet, sherbet and Italian ices
to Windermere and all of the Southwest
Orlando area.
Operating for more than 30 years,
the Bruster’s franchise is known for its
more than 140 flavors, made fresh every
day, right in the store. For Anna,
who was raised in the Windermere
area, Bruster's is both a family and community
affair.
In a recent interview, she shared
that her parents visited a Bruster’s in
Pennsylvania — both where the ice
cream company originated and near
where her parents are from — and it
made a big impact.
“My family and I are big foodies,
so when my mom had the Chocolate
Raspberry Truffle ice cream, she said,
‘We have to get this franchise and bring
it to Windermere.’”
The couple liked it so much, they
bought the franchise more than 10
years ago, but did not open a store right
away because of their busy schedules
and they were waiting for a prime location
to come available. Meanwhile,
K&R Photography
Taylor Burr, a senior at Bishop Moore Catholic High School, serves one of Bruster’s
Real Ice Cream’s banana splits.
after graduating from Florida Gulf
Coast University, Anna worked at Publix
Super Markets’ corporate office, until
she left to focus solely on the ice cream
business.
“We were waiting for the right location
to come along, and we found the
perfect place, because this is a community
I grew up in my whole life,” she
said. “So I took the lead and worked
on opening up the franchise, and here
I am.”
But Anna isn’t only the owner of
Bruster’s, she’s also an ice cream maker.
Every day, seven days a week, she uses
Bruster’s Real
Ice Cream that
makes the store a
community affair.
Bruster’s exclusive mixes and makes all
the batches from scratch in a laborintensive
process. The waffle cones are
also made fresh daily.
Interestingly, Bruster’s is part owner
in its own dairy plant, so she said the
company controls the ice cream quality
“from cow to cone.”
Along with the ice cream, Anna is
especially proud of the Bruster’s cakes.
Cakes can be custom-ordered with a
24- to 48-hour notice. Anna added that
Bruster’s does a lot of other fun treats, as
well. Notably there is the Dino Sundae,
which comes with a scoop of ice cream,
chocolate syrup, rainbow sprinkles and
a big dinosaur cookie. There is also a
Dirt Sundae with fine Oreo crumbles
and a gummy worm. And on Thursdays,
if a customer arrives with their own banana,
they get half-off of their split.
Speaking of those banana splits, they
come with a scoop of chocolate, vanilla
and strawberry, along with a fresh pineapple
topping, fresh strawberries, sliced
bananas, chocolate syrup, whipped
cream, a cherry and a pretzel rod.
“We get a little bit of the salty flavor
with the pretzel, and all of the flavors
combined are so good, because
you have the pineapple, the vanilla,
the chocolate and the strawberries
— and the bananas, of course,”
Anna said.
It is clear she is a lifelong fan of ice
cream. As a child, she was a fan of the
Birthday Cake flavor, but as of late she
loves the graham cracker flavors, more
specifically the Graham Central Station
and Strawberry that is made with fresh
berries.
Actually, trying to pin her down on
a favorite is not an easy task because
of how many unique and tasteful flavors
Bruster's has to offer.
“They all taste so good, and I go
back and forth,” she said. “Once I try
something, I’m like, ‘Never mind, this is
my favorite.’”
Her enthusiasm is also why she loves
the ice cream business so much. On
opening day, as she was watching
kids gravitating to the Cotton Candy
Explosion with Pop Rocks in it or adults
enjoying the Sea Salt Caramel, she was
struck by how it seems everyone loves
ice cream. It puts them in a good mood,
and that includes furry friends who get
a free doggie sundae when they visit
the store.
“Handing an ice cream cone to a
child and seeing them so happy, and
their eyes get so big ... It is a great feeling,
and I feel really fortunate to be a
part of this business,” she said.
Anna also said she looks forward to
taking part in school functions, birthday
parties and even working with community
groups to teach them about the
operation, and opening up the store for
a tour.
“I was raised completely in this community,
and I love having my business
here, where it can also grow with the
community.”
n Protect yourself against
measles
With the increase in measles
cases across the U.S., officials of
the Florida Department of Health in
Orange County urge Floridians and
visitors who have not been immunized
to get vaccinated. Although
measles was thought to be eradicated
in the U.S. in 2000, the disease
has reappeared in recent months
in the form of outbreaks in several
states. The Centers for Disease
Control and Health Protection defines
a measles outbreak as three or
more cases. At the time of print, two
measles cases had been reported
to the Florida Department of Health.
Measles is an acute, highly contagious
viral disease. Although it is usually
considered a childhood disease, it
can be contracted at any age and is
spread through the air by breathing,
coughing or sneezing. The symptoms
of measles generally begin approximately
seven to 14 days after a person
is exposed to the virus. Symptoms
include fever, runny nose, cough and
rash. Anyone who has these symptoms
should contact his or her health care
provider. There is no specific treatment
for measles.
In Florida, children should be immunized
against measles with the
combination measles, mumps and
rubella vaccine (MMR) and should
receive two doses, with the first at 12
to 15 months of age and the second
at 4 to 6 years of age.
Adults should be vaccinated with
at least one dose of the MMR vaccine,
with a second dose recommended
for those at higher risk.
People with underlying health conditions
should discuss with their health
care provider to determine the need
for additional booster doses.
