Late grandmother inspires teen
bowler to successful season
• By Jacob Page
BOWLER BRAEDEN Casware
certainly has a proud supporter
looking down on him when he is
on the green.
The Hillmorton High School
student took up the sport two
years ago after his grandmother,
Irene Harvey, an avid bowler,
died in 2016.
The 16-year-old, who
plays at the Cashmere club,
had a breakthrough season,
finishing second at the
Canterbury secondary school
championships in March and
then finishing 10th in his first
tilt at the national secondary
schools championships in
Auckland a month later.
“My nana played for Halswell
in 2015 and 2016 and then she
retired, and in November of
2016 she died of cancer and after
that I heard she played bowls
and I decided I’d give it a go and
follow in her footsteps,” he said.
A total novice, Braeden has
had to learn the game from
scratch, but said he now loves
the tactics involved.
“The first season was
challenging and I was at
Halswell and they were a big
club so it was hard to make an
impression being the youngest at
the club,” he said.
“I made the switch to
Cashmere because there was a
coach who wanted to train me
there and I’ve since fallen in love
SPORT
ON THE GREEN: Braeden Casware has had a breakthrough
season since he started playing bowls after his grandmother,
Irene Harvey, died.
with Cashmere.”
He still has to keep his grades
high to keep playing.
“Dad said I had to pass NCEA
level one to keep playing, so I
had to pick up my game a bit,”
he said.
Braeden plays football for
Halswell United during the
winter, but he said bowls is his
major sporting focus.
“I really enjoy the game and
I’m improving so I’ll keep at it.”
One day he would like to
represent Canterbury and play
the game professionally.
Talented basketballers pull
off wins for Cashmere High
• By Jacob Page
CASHMERE HIGH School’s
senior boys basketball team
were able to defeat two South
Island opponents in one day last
week.
The South Island champions
ran a split squad and beat
Waimea College 70-64 at
their annual schools sports
exchange in Nelson. The
remaining players, including
some debuting year 10s, were
then able to beat Burnside High
School 100-51 in their Thomson
Trophy encounter. Cashmere
also defended the Dowson Cup,
after they ironically won it off
Burnside in 2017.
The cup is the Ranfurly Shield
equivalent of Christchurch high
Cashmere coach Paul Conner
said it was great to have such
depth in the basketball ranks,
but admits he will have “a good
headache” when it comes to
selecting his squad for the South
Island and national tournaments
later this year,
“It’s always a balancing act
between giving the seniors their
last opportunities at tournaments
and having some succession
planning for the future.
“It’s a problem, but a good
problem to have so many quality
players at our school,” he said.
Alex Wenmoth, Tyrese Kissel,
OJ Tilaia, Jack Clelland and
Jayden Olsen all made their
debuts against Burnside High
