Podcast tells rebarkable stories
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Julia Evans
FIRST THERE was Humans of
New York – now there is Dogs of
New Brighton.
Heritage New Zealand outreach
worker Michele Hollis has released
the pilot episode of her podcast
series – Dogs of New Brighton –
which shares the lives of canines at
the beach and their owners.
“Almost every day I’ve walked
on the beach, mostly with Jess
(her 12-year-old bearded collie
huntaway cross), but I’ve been
thinking for months and months
about how dogs bring people
together in New Brighton,” she
said.
“Christchurch is a dog city, but
New Brighton is the dog capital of
Christchurch.”
Ms Hollis said every dog has a
story. She takes a little inspiration
from the Humans of New York
phenomenon, a photoblog and
book of street portraits and
interviews collected in the Big
Apple.
“It’s great to tell stories. They
talk about regular people, this is
regular dogs,” she said.
Ms Hollis said walking along
the beach with a dog opened
conversation channels that were
otherwise closed – something
which should be celebrated.
“You find out how they got
the dog, what kind of breed it
is, all those wonderful stories.
You realise how many diverse
experiences people pack into their
lives,” she said.
“You find actually people are
really interesting and most people
are really lovely.”
Jess is the show’s co-host.
“She’s a retired working dog.
We rescued her from a stockyard.
There was a meatworks just
outside of Wellington . . . the
shepherd just walked off the job.”
Ms Hollis said Jess is “starting
to slow down” but will still do
anything for food, including cohost
a podcast.
“She’s a very even-tempered
dog and is particularly attached
to me. She loves going to the
beach and just hanging out.”
The pilot episode of Dogs of
New Brighton features Shanti,
a papillon from North New
Brighton, and her owner Su
Jorgensen, an organic hairdresser.
“Shanti only has three legs
because she was hit by a car
before her new owner got her
. . . at the hairdresser. Shanti will
come and jump up and sit on
your lap,” she said.
The pilot was a success and
now Ms Hollis is waiting to hear
back from PlainsFM about a
fortnightly Monday slot.
“I want to celebrate our
distinctness . . . New Brighton is a
place that’s got a lot going for it.”
However, Ms Hollis said while
the first few episodes will focus
on dogs from the Brighton area,
there will be some from across
the city. “I’ve already got my eye
on a few people who bring their
dogs in from across town.”
