Between the years 1956–1959 Harold Geneen was senior
vice president of Raytheon. After that, he was the
president and CEO of ‘International Telephone and
Telegraph Corp.’ (ITT), from the year 1959–1977. Geneen
grew the company from a medium-sized business with
$765 million sales in the year 1961 into an international
conglomerate with $17 billion sales in the year 1970.
Under his management, ITT became the archetypal
modern multinational conglomerate. Furthermore, in the
year 1977 Geneen retired as CEO and president of ITT. He
was the chairman of the board until 1979, and stayed on
the board for four more years.
