dancing, in the summertime, with no air
conditioning. We had fun, though."
The kids Pearse instructed over the
years have gone on to take part in music
groups, spring concerts, and drama
productions. Sounding somewhat like
Richard Dryfuss in "Mr. Holland's
Opus," Pearse says "I am always blown
away by how much progress kids have
made, how great they sound. It happens
every year. There's no way of replacing
any of that in your life."
Pearse earned his degree in music
education from Ithaca College in New
York. He taught in the upstate region
before earning a Master's degree in
vocal performance at the New England
Conservatory of Music in Boston.
"That was my original plan," he
said. He then studied for his doctorate
in choral conducting and was all set
to teach college. But he found his way
to Swampscott, starting at the Stanley
School, got involved in drama, and never
left.
"I'm happy teaching high school," he
said. "All things considered, it's a pretty
rewarding life."
