Darfield look to end Coleman Shield drought
• By Gordon Findlater and
Jacob Page
DARFIELD WILL have a chance
to end a 113-year wait for the
Coleman Shield after a converted
try with the final play of the
game saw them break Springston
hearts 22-21 on Saturday.
Scott McIlroy scored his third
try of the game after a line-out
and with Sean Carston landing
the conversion from a handy
range in tough underfoot conditions,
Darfield booked their
spot against Southbridge in the
decider in spite of trailing 21-3 at
one stage.
They will meet Southbridge
in this weekend’s final after
cruising past Lincoln 33-14 with
200-game midfielder Peni Manumanuniliwa
scoring twice.
Darfield president McIlroy
scored all three of his side’s
comeback. He had hoped to sign
off in style when Darfield played
Southbridge in the 2017 final.
However, Darfield were denied
their first Ellesmere title and
McIlroy concentrated on his new
role as president while playing
for the club’s division three side.
This year he’s been back to his
best and is averaging nearly a try
a game for the premier side. A
key part to his return has been
strengthening the knee which
saw him first hang up the boots.
“I spent lots of time on the bike
in the off-season and have done a
lot of work strengthening it which
SLUSH: Both Darfield and Springston battled with the
conditions at Springston Domain on Saturday.
means I’ve been able to play 80
minutes of rugby for the first time
in a while,” said McIlroy.
The deciding moment of the
game came when Darfield won
a line-out and worked their way
towards the Springston line
with time expired. McIlroy was
handed the ball off a breakdown
and powered over the line under
the posts by his teammates, including
his twin brother Blair.
The winning conversion was
made by Sean Carston who has
spent most of the year playing in
the colts grade.
Darfield co-coach Kris Rodgers
said it was a great show of
tenacity from his team.
“It was jubilation, it wasn’t
relief. We were dominant in that
second half, we had a try disallowed
and one knocked-on over
the line so it was a good feeling,”
said Rodgers.
“We were playing all the footy,
just the points weren’t coming.
That was a clutch final line-out
for us.”
He said his team would be
keen to reverse the 27-12 defeat
they suffered at home when the
two teams met last month.
“That was a bit of a towel-up
but we have the chance to return
the favour,” he said.
It will be Darfield’s third
straight final, having lost
to Southbridge in 2017 and
Waihora last year.
Springston’s Sam Cottam scores a try.
