18 Wednesday July 24 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Darfield High School Community News—Term 2, 2019 Review Mid-Winter Party On Friday 28 June, we held our annual International Mid Winter Party. It was great to get together and celebrate surviving Term 2 and spend time together, especially with some of the students who are finishing Darfield High School at the end of the term. As well as our International students, we also had the French exchange students, and about 25 Kiwi friends and host brothers and sisters. Everyone enjoyed the pizza and ice cream, before it was time to turn down the lights and dance the night away. Year 12 Market Day SELWYN TIMES Page 2 The Year 12 Commerce class put all of their planning, organising and creating together for Market Day, during Term 2. In groups, they decide what product they want to create, while integrating a community focus. Then, for the following four to six weeks, they craft their business plan based around their product by selecting personally suited management roles and evenly contributing to the business plan based on their strengths. Weekly meetings are held to ensure they are on track to meet their time goals. About one week before Market Day, after finishing the business plan, it is time to create their product. Market Day products included Beeswax Wraps, Bottle Poppers, Succulents in Jars and Decorated Mugs. Cultural Diversity Day This year we celebrated Cultural Diversity Day with international and domestic students representing Thailand, Austria, Japan, France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands and China. Each table had an interactive activity for visitors to have a go at, including general knowledge quizzes, language-based challenges, and practical activities. It was great to see the visiting domestic students eagerly engaging in the activities, and lots of smiles all round. Careers Expo The annual Careers Expo had 23 representatives participating, this year, from local Universities Lincoln and Canterbury, to institutes like the Aviation Institute, the Defence Force, Camp America and the Sport Institute. This is a great opportunity for students to find out more about what is required academically and gives them an opportunity to speak to the representatives from a variety of organisations. NZ Defence Force Tasks A group of Year 10 students spent a session with the New Zealand Defence Force. They were placed into groups and a leader for each group was identified. They then had to complete a task that was set by the NZDF. The exercises are based around gaining confidence in one's ability to lead a group. The exercises are mental problems, and NZDF coach the leader through how to deal with the changing group dynamics as the exercise unfolds. Then, once the round is over, the individual groups are given a chance to give constructive feedback to the leader: something they thought went well, and something to improve upon. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday July 24 2019 19 Darfield High School Community News—Term 2, 2019 Review Cross Country Success Page 3 Outdoor Education The Year 12 Outdoor Education Tramp to Tarn Col prove to be a massive and demanding journey for the students, that tested them all at stages along the way. Tramping a huge 10-hour day tested them all but also brought them together as teamwork, support and encouragement were essential to make it possible to conquer the massive challenge that awaited them. It will be a shared adventure that won’t be forgotten as, with such challenge, comes massive growth. Following their success at the Canterbury Secondary Championships, Nathan Carter and Isla McPherson travelled to Timaru to compete in this year’s New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships Isla competed against over 89 Year 9 girls, finishing in 26th place. Nathan competed in the two kilometre AWD race and won! This was a fabulous result following his success at a previous NZ cross country event and last year’s road race at the New Zealand Athletic Championships. Emerging Leaders This year’s Emerging Leaders Conference was held at Christ's College. It is an opportunity for Year 12 students to broaden their knowledge of what a good leader is and how to act like one. An inspiring and thought provoking day for the future leaders of Darfield High School. Yubetsu Scholarship Our three Yubetsu scholarship students have recently returned home, with their Japanese buddies. They travelled to Tokyo, Japan on 26 May. Hayden de Burger, Niamh Guy and Max Whyte have been based in Yubetsu, with their host families. They have been attending school, making new friends and adjusting to the new culture. Welcome home.
