Call for vigilance
crossing rivers
•From page 1
The man’s ute was taken by the
river.
“I imagine it’s well under water
now,” Mr Chatterton said.
It was believed the man was
crossing the river to go duck shooting.
The rescue mission took around
30min.
A rescue helicopter was unable to
come in and help with the rescue
due to fog, in spite of this Mr Chatterton
said it was a good result and
they were able to get the man out
of the river with no injuries. His
clothing had also kept him warm.
“It was very challenging conditions,
he was lucky we got there
when we did.”
He said it wasn’t an ideal situation
and people need to be vigilant
when crossing rivers at this time
of year.
“It’s important to assess the situation
first and check out the conditions
of the river before you go.”
It comes after a number of river
incidents in the Canterbury region.
Kayde Anderson, 9, from Dunsandel
died when the ute he was in
with three men rolled several times
in the Clyde River, near Erewhon
Station, two weeks ago.
Four people had to be winched to
safety by a rescue helicopter after
their two vehicles became stuck in
the Waimakariri River on the same
day.
Budding architects put their skills to the
test at the very popular World of Bricks
school holiday programme at Lincoln
Library. Children spent the day creating
art with mosaics and having fun time.
THE ROLLESTON Residents
Association desperately needs
a new leader or else it will
cease to exist.
The current chairwoman
Leonie MacLachlan (right)
is stepping down after the
association’s annual general
meeting next month.
“I have enjoyed my time as
chairperson, where I have met
and worked with like-minded
people. It has been a very busy
period for me, as I am a marriage
celebrant and also work,
therefore I will not be seeking
re-election,” Mrs MacLachlan
said.
The association is allocated
funds each year
by the district council
to use in the Rolleston
township.
Its 2018/2019 discretionary
fund budget for the last
financial year was $44,605.
The 2019/2020 budget is due
to be allocated but can’t be if a
new chairperson doesn’t step
forward.
Mrs MacLachlan said after
three years as chairwoman, she
still plans on being a member of
the association.
“I feel our community
deserves residents’ input as to
where to spend our discretionary
fund, but unfortunately without
a chairperson our association
will no longer be able to run.”
The association has undertaken
many major projects in
the community.
One of the biggest to date
was to fundraise for and help
build the Rolleston community
centre which opened in 1999.
The committee at the time was
driven to provide a community
space for Rolleston groups to
The association has three subcommittees
– one for the annual
How to choose a quality early
learning centre for your child
Choosing an early learning centre
for your child is a big decision but
fortunately, research shows that children
benefit from quality, loving, stimulating
and supportive early childhood centres.
The benefits of early learning centres
We know that quality childhood
education can have a great effect on
children’s social skills, communication
and language, giving them a head start
when beginning school. Research shows
these skills can also set them up for
academic success later in their adult
lives.
All qualified teachers have three-year
early childhood degrees and diplomas.
They provide a wide range of experiences
that extend children’s abilities, giving
them opportunities for physical, mental
and emotional growth.
ADVERTORIAL
Choosing an early learning centre
We recommend you shop around. Jump
online – what’s in your community?
There are many different types of
early learning centres. Find out their
differences and locations - do you need a
centre close to home – or work?
There are many types of financial
support. WINZ can help subsidise
(conditions apply) and most centres offer
20 hours free from three years.
Get personal recommendations from
other parents and if you’re interested in
a centre, request a copy of their last ERO
(Education Review Office) report.
Visit your short-listed centres with
your child through an appointment
or simply drop in. The benefit to an
appointment is that centre staff will be
expecting you, will show you around and
answer any questions you may have.
Take time to absorb the feeling of the
centre. Are staff interacting respectfully
and engaged with children in the centre?
Are there good play resources available?
Are children fully engaged? Talk to
the staff about what you want for your
child, any concerns you have, and listen
carefully to their responses.
BestStart Educare has been operating
