McIlroy scored three tries in his side’s thrilling 22-21 win over Springston to reach the final of the Coleman Shield. McIlroy is 35 and went into “retirement” at the end of the 2017 season to take up the role as Darfield’s club president. But the big boy, affectionately known as Scones, has found a new lease of rugby life back on the field. He has been averaging a try a match this season and has obviously played a large part in Darfield’s success in 2019. Finals day for all grades is at Prebbleton on Saturday. Former chairman of the Weedons Residents Association John McKim said it’s disappointing but not surprising that Fulton Hogan has been granted the extension. “The man with the biggest chequebook always wins, and that’s exactly what’s happened here.” Mr McKim has opposed the quarry from the beginning and said he feels like they’re out of options. “The only thing we can do is object and hope the commissioners have enough sense to make sure residents’ concerns are looked after.” The Weedons Residents Association disbanded after the resignation of Mr McKim EXTENDED: Fulton Hogan will have extra time to prepare for the upcoming hearings over its proposed Roydon Quarry. The Templeton Residents’ Association is also concerned Fulton Hogan will be given an “advantage” in its preparation for the upcoming hearings over its proposed Roydon Quarry. Originally, the hearing for the quarry had to be completed within 75 working days of the submission period closing (October 10). Fulton Hogan requested Environment Canterbury and the district council extend the time frame for the hearing – it now does not have to be completed until January 23. Resident association chairwoman Jolene Eagar said she can’t understand how the extension is justified as being fair for everyone. An ECan spokeswoman said Fulton Hogan has to wait for a section 42A report to be released before it can begin working on its evidence for the hearing. The report, which will discuss the submissions on the quarry and recommend whether the resource consent should be granted or not, will be made available by September 2. Fulton Hogan will then have until September 23 to respond and provide evidence to the hearings panel. All submitters intending to use expert evidence in support of their submissions will have to provide it by October 14. Mrs Eagar is concerned Fulton Hogan already has the information from the submissions available to them to start preparing for the hearing. She initially questioned if the time frames can be extended for Fulton Hogan, why couldn’t the 15 working days be extended to allow submitters to respond to Fulton Hogan’s evidence. Any party participating in the hearing can request further time to prepare responses to the hearings panel. But Mrs Eagar said the association is not familiar with the Resource Management Act and it should have been told by ECan what it can and can’t do. MAN DONATES $100 Lincoln Isushi owner Linlin Cheng said a man came into the store last Thursday and donated $100 after hearing the business was scammed with counterfeit money. The man did not want to give his name or number but said he’d heard about what happened and wanted to help. Mrs Cheng said she was moved by the act of kindness: “What he did shows the Lincoln community really does care and support us.” It comes a week after a man and woman separately used fake $100 notes at the store. LIBRARY IT UPGRADES Selwyn libraries are receiving upgrades to their IT services this week. Due to the work being carried out, public computers and printing won’t be available at Lincoln Library today, Leeston on Thursday and Darfield on Friday. A district council spokesman said Wi-fi can still be accessed from personal devices and they apologise for the inconvenience. Public computers and printing will be available from Saturday.
