now a ‘Safe Place’
The Westland Area Library is now a
designated Safe Place in the central Ohio
community. The building will display the
yellow and black Safe Place sign, which
signifies immediate help and safety for
youth.
It is estimated over one million youth
run away from home each year due to
abuse, neglect, family conflicts and other
issues. The Safe Place program is an
option for young people who feel they have
nowhere to turn.
Columbus’ Safe Place initiative, operated
by Huckleberry House, is part of a
national network of Safe Place programs in
37 states and the District of Columbia.
Nearly 20,000 community businesses and
organizations nationwide display the Safe
Place sign, making help readily available
for youth in need.
Meghann Hall, a second grade teacher at Prairie Lincoln Elementary School, tends to the Lincoln Village Youth and Community
Garden. The garden, which is located on the grounds at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, was a collaborative effort
between the church, the school and the community.
Let’s Get Growing
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Most students do not want anything to
do with school during summer break.
They want to have fun, decompress from
a long year and do just about anything
else that does not require being near
school grounds. Yet there is a group of
children and adults from Prairie Lincoln
Elementary who voluntarily spend their
summer days coming back.
The desire to return began to take root
last year when members of the neighboring
Westminster Presbyterian Church
proposed a collaboration with the school
to benefit the greater community.
“We didn’t have any particular idea in
mind,” said Jim Benney, a team leader at
the church. “We just wanted to do something
together that would serve our local
community.”
When educators at the school began to
brainstorm collaborative concepts, one
idea that kept popping up was the establishment
of a garden.
“We all liked the idea of starting a garden
because it served a variety of purposes,”
said second grade teacher Meghann
Hall. “Not only could we shape lessons
around the science and nutrition behind a
garden, but we could also have our kids
play a vital role in helping to feed others.”
With Principal Julie Kenney’s blessing,
the staff went ahead with forming a
garden task force. However, there was
one caveat: they had to find another place
to build the garden.
“Due to safety reasons, we could not
have our garden located on the school
property,” said Hall.
That’s when the church stepped in.
“We have a lot of free green space,”
said Benney.
With the idea and location locked
down, the task force reached out to the
Parent Teacher Association for assistance.
One member said she knew an
Eagle Scout, Conner Kennedy, who was
looking for a project and wanted to build
the raised beds. Other members said they
could help raise seedlings. But there was
another aspect they desperately needed
help with and that was funding.
That’s when Eli Green stepped in.
“Eli was our unsung hero,” said Hall.
Having graduated from Prairie
Lincoln Elementary more than two years
ago, the soon-to-be seventh grader at
Norton Middle offered his services writing
a grant for Katie’s Krops, a non-profit
organization that helps communities
informed that they had received a $500
grant to start their garden.
In May, Kennedy and his fellow Boy
Scout troops came to Westminster
Presbyterian and tore up the land to create
six beds — one for each grade level to grow
their own crops, and one for the church to
grow theirs too.
With the help of Benney’s childhood
friend and master gardener Roger
McArtor, they filled the beds with the most
growth friendly dirt and then waited for
the kids to arrive.
“We brought them all over, grade level
by grade level, and they were so excited,”
said Hall. “Most of them had never planted
a seed before, let alone used a tiny shovel,
but they were all so thrilled to pitch in.”
They planted sunflowers, cabbage, lettuce
and strawberries. They planted tomatoes
and spinach. They planted herbs like
basil, thyme and dill. And they even planted
a few native flowers to attract more
bees.
Hall said each of the students at the
school played some role in creating the garden.
“It truly has been a school-wide effort,”
she said.
As the end of the school year
approached, several students expressed
concern about the state of the garden.
“They were very worried it wouldn’t be
there when they got back,” said Hall.
SAFE PLACE
Continued from page 1
“Our youth often find themselves at our
local libraries, and adding Westland Area
Library as a Safe Place site expands
Huckleberry House’s front porch to keep
our Columbus youth safe,” said Becky
Westerfelt, executive director of
Huckleberry House.
Michele Lowe, assistant director of
Westland Area Library, said, “Westland
Area Library has been a vital part of the
far westside community for many years,
and this is another way the library can
serve the vulnerable, improve lives, and
help make the community a better place.”
Huckleberry House is central Ohio’s
Safe Place agency and has 84 partner sites,
community events
But she promised to come back and take
care of the garden (she goes twice a week,
along with fellow educator Ruth Mohr),
and so did the Boy Scouts, the local Girl
Scout troops, the church congregation, and
even Green and his family.
“We all go there every week,” said Amy
Green, Eli’s mother.
In the weeks that followed since the initial
planting, the crops grew. And grew.
And grew some more. Thankfully, said
Hall, insects have been kind to the garden.
So has the neighboring community.
“They have been wonderful,” she said.
“We lack a great irrigation system here but
they have donated at least five rain barrels
for us to use.”
Benney said when they proposed the collaborative
concept, they had no idea this
would be the outcome but he believes it
perfectly encompasses the spirit of the community.
“This is a community that cares about
each other,” he said.
In mid-July, the sign designation the
garden as the ‘Lincoln Village Youth and
Community Garden’ will arrive, as will
those who voluntarily return to take care of
it. There are many plans to expand the garden,
but for now they are just looking forward
to what it can and will do for those in
the community.
“It’s a great way to start to make a difference
in the world,” said Eli Green.
of Police SWAT Team and Canine Unit,
and Columbus Division of Fire will be on
hand.
Former NFL player Antoine Harris addresses participants in the football skills camp
held at Bishop Ready High School on July 13.
Giving back to the Westside
By Hannah Poling
Staff Writer
Former NFL player Antoine Harris
wanted to give back to the westside community
and he did so by hosting a skills
camp for children at Bishop Ready on July
13.
Harris was born and raised on the westside
of Columbus. He attended Hiltonia,
went to West Mound, and then went to
Bishop Ready for high school. After high
school, Harris went to the university of
Louisville where he went on a scholarship
for football but also got a degree in communications.
He played professional football
with the Tennessee Titans in 2005 and
2006. He played with the Atlanta Falcons
from 2007-2009. Finally, he played for the
Philadelphia Eagles in 2010 and 2011. He
played the position of safety and corner
and was also a special teams captain.
Harris began holding his free football
skills camp on the westside in 2009 and
continued through 2011. However, playing
professional football and raising a family
elsewhere in the United States, Harris had
to cut the camp for a while.
“When I lived in Atlanta, it was hard for
me to get back when my kids were
younger, so I took a break from having the
camp for a while,” said Harris. “Now, my
kids are older, and we travel a lot, so I felt
like it was time to start doing the camp
again.”
More than 100 kids in grades K-8 preregistered
for the camp this year and
approximately 40 walk-ins were anticipated.
According to Harris, he wants to continue
holding this camp annually. Currently
the camp is a one-day event however,
Harris wants to see it grow.
“Ideally I would like to do this every single
year and I would like to make it into a
bigger thing after this year,” Harris said.
Harris said that the purpose of the
camp is to give back to his hometown and
pass along his football knowledge to kids
interested in the sport.
“For me, it is a way to bring the westside
together,” said Harris.
In order to make this camp a success,
Harris partnered with Jerome Buckner,
president of the West Mound Stars. Harris
used to play little league along with
Buckner for the Stars in the late 80s and
early 90s. The two have been friends since.
According to Buckner, giving back to the
community has always been something
Harris has been passionate about.
“It was just something that he wanted
to do. He’s always been someone who wanted
to give back,” said Buckner.
This camp was not only intended to
teach these young students about football
but also about life and paying it forward.
“It means a lot because there is nobody
out here on the westside that’s doing it.
The west is starving out here, so things
like this is very beneficial and hopefully we
can continue to do it and support our community,”
Buckner said.
Many of the parents of the participants
were also impressed with Harris’s commitment
to donating his time in order to help
the community.
“That’s pretty awesome,” said Donald
Cook. “He is a local guy in a local community
giving back to everybody in this area
and to the kids. So, to donate his time is
very generous of him.”
Parents and participants were also
excited to participate in a unique camp this
summer.
“This is our first time coming so we are
just excited for camp. My son’s all about
football this year so we are just excited to
be here,” said Emily Morgan.
Columbus police get tools to help save lives
Sudden cardiac arrest is the third leading
cause of death in the United States.
In Columbus, over 600 residents suffer
from sudden cardiac arrest outside a hospital
setting each year. That equates to nearly
two incidents a day. Currently only 12
percent of these 600 victims recover from
their sudden cardiac arrest event.
Speedy response time to a sudden cardiac
arrest is crucial to the victim’s survival.
If an Automated External
Defibrillator (AED) delivers a shock within
the first three to five minutes after a person’s
heart stops, the odds of survival are
60 percent to 70 percent.
While the Division of Fire EMS has an
excellent response rate on average of under
St. James Lutheran Church, 5660
Trabue Road, Columbus, will host its 36th
annual Brats and Crafts Festival Aug. 2-4.
Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, 11:30 a.m. to
9 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday.
eight minutes, the Columbus Division of
Police often responds more quickly.
Equipping CPD cruisers with AEDs can
increase the likelihood that an AED is used
within the crucial time window that will
increase chance of survival.
“Although police response will not
replace EMS responding and transporting
the victim to the appropriate healthcare
facility, increasing our first responders’
access to lifesaving equipment will act as a
force multiplier in our community,” said
councilman Mitchell Brown.
Council approved legislation to purchase
30 AEDs to be placed in Columbus
Division of Police cruisers. The division has
already outfitted 36 vehicles with the
devices. The same response protocol will be
used to ensure the units outfitted with the
devices are dispatched to incidents of sudden
cardiac arrests in addition to EMS personnel.
These 30 additional AED units will
be dispersed in precincts with the highest
volume of calls related to sudden cardiac
arrest. The success of the pilot program
will be evaluated after one year, and may
be expanded if proven successful and funding
is available.
“I commend the Columbus Division of
Police for embracing an initiative that
enhances their skill-set as first responders
in order to save lives,” said Brown.
This pilot is one of the recommendations
made in May by the HeartSafe Columbus
St. James to hosts its annual Brats and Crafts Festival
The event will include authentic
German food and beer, and live German
polka music and dancing featuring Ken
and Mary Turbo Accordions Express. An
1860s-era “base ball” game will be played
Saturday at 3 p.m. featuring the Ohio
Village Muffins and the St. James
Lutheran Strikers. The weekend concludes
with a mime/juggling Sunday school program,
the Columbus Maennerchor and the
traditional German Worship Service on
Sunday afternoon.
Taskforce. Comprised of first responders,
healthcare professionals, and community
advocates, the Taskforce submitted recommendations
to improve Columbus’s survival
rate from sudden cardiac arrest. Over
the coming year, Brown will continue to
implement these recommendations with
the goal to double Columbus’ survival rate
from sudden cardiac arrest.
In addition to the deployment of AEDs,
the Columbus Division of Police has also
committed to annual Hands Only CPR
training for every member of the division.
The division projects that all 2,200 members
will receive training by the end 2020.
to find her forever family. Venus is available for
She will need lots of
exercise, tennis balls,
and attention to wear
her out. Because July
can be sometimes
rough at play, she will
require kids over the
no other dogs or
Voodoo is a 2-year-old pit bull. Action is his middle name. He has a
‘let’s go’ lifestyle that will keep you motivated to get outside and move.
Voodoo has tons of energy, and just like the sun, he’s burning and
working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He can run for miles,
chase a ball for hours, and still want to play at the end of the day. If you
think you can keep up with this one, meet Voodoo at the county dog
shelter.
July 28, 2019 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - PAGE 7
Reading is a passion for many people.
But even avid readers may not know just
how far back their love of reading stretches.
According to the American Academy of
Pediatrics, children who find pleasure in
reading have the potential to become lifelong
readers. In addition, studies have
shown that reading to children can help
kids become familiar with sounds, words
and language, helping them in their earliest
stages of cognitive development. So
adults who love books might be able to
trace their passion for page-turners to
those times their mothers and fathers read
aloud to them as youngsters.
Parents who want to their children to
learn to love reading can rely on various
techniques to accomplish that goal.
•Make reading a routine. Routine is a
necessity for parents, helping children
learn when it’s time to eat, play and go to
sleep, among other things. Parents can
include reading to their children as part of
their daily routines. As noted, doing so will
promote language skills and cognitive
development while also acclimating children
to books and providing valuable time
Back - to - School
Establishing a love for reading at a young age
for them to bond with their parents.
•Create a distraction-free reading environment.
When reading to children, parents
can create an environment with little
to no distractions. This allows kids to focus
on their parents’ voices as well as the story
they’re being told. Parents can turn off the
television and the radio when reading to
their kids. In addition, moms and dads
should leave smartphones or tablets in
another room so they aren’t distracted by
alerts or tempted to check for incoming
messages or emails.
•Read aloud together. Some children
may shy away from reading if they struggle
in their initial efforts to read. That does not
mean kids won’t ultimately enjoy reading,
it just means a little more effort may be
required on parents’ part to help kids overcome
any issues they have. Reading aloud
to children can help little ones learn how to
become good readers, as they will learn
how to pronounce words and form sentences.
Kids who know how to read can be
encouraged to read to their parents, which
can instill self-esteem.
•Let kids pick their own books. When
reading to youngsters, whether they’re
babies, toddlers or already in school, parents
can let sons and daughters choose
their own books. Children might be especially
enthusiastic about reading if they’re
allowed to choose their own books and stories.
Ohio Christian’s Emergency and Disaster
Management Program
When Cayla Allen (’21) first started her college
career at Ohio Christian University, she
wanted to be a teacher. Later on, she switched to
an emergency and disaster management degree.
After receiving a degree, students are qualified to
work in areas ranging from local non-profits to
large, international organizations.
One benefit of the Emergency and Disaster
Management program is the hands-on experience
students get in the field.
“I have served on two disaster relief deployments
through OCU with The Salvation Army;
Reading can benefit children from the
earliest stages of their lives all the way
through adulthood. Parents can take various
steps to foster a love of reading in their
children.
PAID ADVERTISING
Ohio Christian’s Emergency and
Disaster Management program
one in Puerto Rico (2017) and one in Florida
(2018), which were my favorite experiences,”
Allen said. “Secondly, I have taken several trainings
through The Salvation Army, certifying me
in different areas.”
The professors in this program are very dedicated
to educating their students and helping them
achieve their goals.
When asked about the staff at Ohio Christian,
Allen said, “My professors here at OCU are some
of the most qualified and experienced people I
have ever met, and I hope I never take for granted
what they have provided me with to get where I
am today and where I will be in the future.”

classifieds. Determining
the value of their service
or product is advised by
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
not offer “employment”
but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories
designed to help
their clients establish mail
order selling and other
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
license ID or credit card
numbers. Also beware of
ads that claim to guarantee
loans regardless of
credit and note that if a
credit repair company
does business only over
the phone it’s illegal to request
any money before
delivering its service. All
