The festival is scheduled
of ribs and hours of live music.
Sway to the music and sip a cold beverage
from the beer tent as you choose among
the five central Ohio rib vendors signed up
to dish out finger-licking goodness: Wilson’s
Family BBQ, Rudy’s Smokehouse, Fine
The festival is stocked with talented musicians
who will make you question whether
you are in London, Ohio, or the Mississipi
Delta.
Friday, Aug. 2
Local favorite Matt Rees will kick off the
music at 12:15 p.m. Friday. Specializing in
a repertoire of folk, rock and pop songs, Rees
Stills & Nash and The Byrds, among others.
The duo begins at 2 p.m.
Returning to the festival at 3:45 p.m.
semble is an exciting rock band with a full horn section that brings
a diverse combination of musical stylings to the concert stage.
Making his debut at the festival is Columbus-based Keith T-Bone
Colbert, boasting a musical style that is an evolution of modern blues
with a firm foundation inspired by the blues styles of Texas, Chicago
and the Delta. Influenced by artists like Robert Johnson, Howling
Wolf, B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Colbert’s music is a slow
rev mixing traditional riffs with a modern flair. He will take the
stage just in time for the dinner hour at 5:30 p.m.
The soulful and energetic Doug Hart Band is making its second
appearance at the festival. The Dayton-based group plays original
material along with the songs you know and love. It’s bluesy, it’s
rock. It’s a versatile blend, and it begins at 7:15 p.m.
Hot cars and cool art at the Rib and Jazz Festival
Chalk artists will bring their talent back
to the London Rib and Jazz Festival this
year, and the art is much more elaborate
than your childhood hopscotch game.
Four chalk artists from the organization
ChalkStix will draw their masterpieces on
East Second Street during the first day of
26 E. High St., London, OH
(740) 845-0745
127 E. Main St., W. Jefferson, OH
(614) 379-5407
the two-day festival. Each artist will draw
their own 8x8-foot drawing.
The public can watch the artists in action
beginning at about 9 a.m. Aug 3. The festival
continues on Aug. 4.
“My favorite question I get asked is,
‘What happens when you're done?’ My answer
is always the same: ‘It fades or gets
washed away by the rain,’ ” said Jennifer
Russell, a founding member of ChalkStix
and a member of the Ohio Chalk Art Guild.
“Street painting is temporary, but for a
minute it can be the most beautiful thing
you see that day. I think that’s why I fell in
love with it. Nothing is better than creating
art outside on a beautiful day.”
After artists paint the streets on Friday
afternoon, the festival’s cornhole tournament
will take place in the evening. The
tournament will start promptly at 6:30 p.m.
RIB & JAZZ
Continued from page 1
on West Second Street. Participants should
bring their own partner. Entry fee is $20 per
team.
The tournament is double elimination
with the winning team taking home $100
and trophies. Second place earns $50, and
third place gets their money back.
There is no early registration this year.
Sign up just before the tournament begins
at 5:30 p.m. The cut-off to sign-up will be at
6:15 p.m.
The popular London Rib & Jazz Festival
car show will take place on Saturday. The
show, sponsored by Wilson’s Printing &
Graphics, will be on East and West Second
streets from 5 to 8 p.m., with awards at
8:15.
The 2018 car show attracted more than
125 vehicles. Registration takes place from
2 to 5 p.m. Entry fee is $10.
Headlining the first night of the festival is the Noah Wotherspoon
Band, taking the stage at 9 p.m. Wotherspoon, of Cincinnati, has
been immersed in the blues and mesmerizing audiences with his
soulful guitar playing since he was a teenager. In 2015, he received
the Best Guitarist Award at the International Blues Challenge, and
the band placed second in the finals.
Saturday, Aug. 3
Old School Union will kick off Saturday’s music lineup at 12:15
p.m. and set the streets on fire. Lead singer Darchelle Williams has
been described as “the best kept secret in Columbus,” while band
members have played with greats such as James Brown, The Temptations
and Rick James, to name a few.
Playing their own unique Americana sound at 2 p.m. is the Charlotte
West Band, featuring Nathan Traver. Founding members Reagan
Godlewski and Nathan Travis met as commercial music majors
at Nashville’s Belmont University. From the start, they aligned on
their vision to write and perform music, blending elements from
their backgrounds in the blues with roots rock and classic country.
They have recruited a band of talented, like-minded musicians to
flesh out their sound and provide a live jam experience that complements
their studio recordings.
At 3:45 p.m., get ready to feel like you’re in church for the return
of festival favorite, InnerVision. Led by two life-long friends who
both lost their vision as infants but found God-given musical abilities
as young children, this Westerville-based group’s set list includes
contemporary Christian music, radio favorites and classics
such as “At Last” and “Unchain My Heart.”
Talented soloist Micah Kesselring will fill the festival with a big
sound, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Raised in the Appalachia foothills of
southeastern Ohio, Kesselring made his way onto the Columbus
blues music scene as a teen. He soon made his way to Memphis for
the International Blues Challenge and has been a regular finalist
on the scene since.
Enjoy the after-dinner hour at 7:15 p.m. with the talent of the
blues-influenced Blue Cats. The veteran four-man group performs
energy intensive original arrangements of favorites from their musical
hip pockets. Members have played with a wide variety of national
acts, including James Brown, Albert King, Linda Ronstadt,
Bobby Blue Bland, Johnny Paycheck and Luther Allison.
Closing out the festival is the Hadden Sayers Band. A Texas native,
Sayers is just as comfortable on a massive festival stage with
a Stratocaster in his hands as he is strumming an acoustic guitar
in your living room. Sayers and his band are masters of their instruments,
but his passionate songwriting twists rock, blues and
soul into something completely fresh. This band will keep festival
goers on their feet from 9 to 10:30 p.m.
Superheroes on the run
It will be the same Superhero fun but
with a different route and time this year as
the 5K returns to the London Rib & Jazz
Festival.
The London Kiwanis Club has accepted
the torch from Access Cowling to organize
the Superhero Run, Walk & Roll 5K. This
will be the third year for the family-friendly
run, originally started as a fundraiser for
improvements at Cowling Park.
The race will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 2,
a change from the Saturday morning start
time. Additionally, participants will begin
and end in the heart of the festival as before,
but instead run along the bike trail.
London Kiwanis President Zahid Siddiqi
said the non-profit “couldn’t resist” the opportunity
to take over a race coinciding with
the festival.
“The race is a great deal of fun for all
types of runners–serious road racers, casual
runners, walkers and even those with
disabilities,” he said. “We hope there is excellent
turnout for the race, which we hope
will also boost attendance for the festival.
Registration cost is $30 and includes a T-
shirt.
Proceeds benefit the work of the London
Kiwanis Club, which donates thousands of
dollars each year to organizations such as
the London Area Baseball Council, Raider
Rack and London Fireworks. Additionally,
the club provides scholarships to highschoolers
at London and Madison-Plains,
donates backpacks stuffed with school supplies,
funds the London Kiwanis Soccer
League, and organizes the annual Easter
Egg Hunt at Cowling Park, among other activities.
Volunteers dressed as superheroes will
once again line the route. Medals will be
awarded for the winners in each age group.
Register for the race at RunSignUp.com
(search for London Jazz & Ribfest 5K).
Forms can also be picked up from a member
of the London Kiwanis or at Wilson’s Printing
Science festival in London
Festival is a collaboration
with governments, state,
businesses, education,
non-profits and COSI
By Andrew Garrett
Staff Writer
London will be one of six central Ohio
cities to play host for events making up the
2020 COSI Science Festival.
London Mayor Patrick Closser attended
a celebration at the science and industry
center on July 9 - where he joined the mayors
of Marysville, Delaware, Circleville,
Heath, and Pickerington on stage - where it
was announced that each city was chosen as
a partner for the event.
A collaboration between local municipalities,
the state of Ohio, businesses such as
Battelle, non-profits, and education partners,
the 2020 COSI Science Festival will be
one of the largest science, technology, engineering,
and math (STEM) family-friendly
events in Ohio history, Closser said. The
festival will be free for any Ohioan.
A goal of the festival is to plant the seed
for a love of STEM studies in the minds of
youths and help develop a current and future
STEM workforce pipeline for Ohio.
The festival will be held in early May
2020 over four key dates, but will feature
STEM events in the community throughout
the year for central Ohio, including London,
Closser said. Currently, the events or exhibits
which London will specifically host
have not been announced, but last year’s interactive
events included everything from a
chemistry-themed scavenger hunt, to a special
exhibition presented by NASA.
The festival will culminate in an event
called the Big Science Celebration and will
be held on a Saturday at the Scioto Peninsula
surrounding COSI. It will have more
than 130 different booths featuring handson,
experiential learning opportunities and
activities.
Other news
•The London Rib and JazzFest is scheduled
for Aug. 2 and Aug.3. The festival runs
from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each day.
•Council adopted legislation that allows
for the city’s safety service director approval
to enter into an agreement by which the city
of London will pay West Jefferson $112,000
per year for building inspection services.
The city recently terminated its agreement
with Clark County, which was performing
the same services for the “same deal,” according
to Closser.
According to Closser, the contract should
continue to pay for itself with permit fees
and the savings from not having to pay
salaries and benefits as would be the case
were the city to have its own department.
• Sue Mosier introduced herself as the
city’s new treasurer. Appointed by the Republican
Central Committee, Mosier takes
the place of former treasurer Jason
Schwaderer. A life-long Madison County
resident, she has lived in London for over
40 years. Mosier is recently retired from her
position as Child Support Administrator at
The Ohio Department of Jobs and Family
Services. Prior to that, she worked for
Huntington Bank for 15 years, where she
advanced to assistant branch manager and
worked in mortgage lending. Mosier took
the oath for the office on July 3.
Work’s payoff can come in unexpected form
Job satisfaction and long-term career goals were not on the mind
of my mother as a 14-year-old graduate of the Austrian school system
looking for employment in post-World War II Vienna.
Yes, age 14 is the graduation age (they do things differently in
Europe) and no, it was not an easy task to find a job amid the ruin
and rubble of a city recovering from the bombing brought about by
the war.
Going shop-to-shop, she asked, inquired and begged for a position
to earn money to help her family, not unlike thousands of other
teenagers and adults displaced by years of Nazi and Russian occupation.
She finally found employment–on a production line stuffing cotton
into stainless steel lighters. Later she sold knives at festivals
to country folk who believed the company’s “will never lose its
sharpness” hype, then served travelers at an outdoor restaurant,
often working 80 hours a week.
My mother was 19 when four nations patrolled quadrants of the
city. My father was serving in the Army at the time and, while it
was not love at first sight–my mother was, and still is, an independent
woman–they fell in love and got married.
After coming to America, getting settled and raising me, my
mother went back to work at a restaurant on Parsons Avenue in
Columbus near a railroad complex.
You might not think of Parsons Avenue as a destination spot for
fine dining. (The building is still there today, albeit boarded up and
in a terrible state of disrepair.) But at one time, Johnson’s Restaurant
served the movers and shakers of Columbus, including mayors,
lawyers and a young Jack Nicklaus.
Tables were covered in linen, well-maintained fish tanks functioned
as living portraits of sea life, and a special Japanese-themed
room featured low-level seating. Waitresses like my mother were
dressed in white uniforms and knew many of the customers by
name, always addressing them formally as Mr. or Mrs.
While the restaurant still served railroad workers during the afternoon
rush at a lunch counter on the opposite side of the building,
dimmed lighting and elevated seating areas were hallmarks of the
finer dining area.
Although located outside of the downtown loop, Johnson’s was
still considered one of the city’s “fancier” establishments and tips
reflected that status. It was not uncommon for my mother to receive
a $3 tip, considered high for the time.
This brings me to the crux of my story.
I asked my mother the other
day, “What was the best tip you
ever received while working as a
waitress?” Her response surprised
me. “25 cents.”
She told me that one evening a couple came in. The
man was dressed in clean, but older overalls and the
wife was dressed in a plain, but pressed dress.
She was timidly clutching a small handbag and a
handkerchief.
They were seated, looked over the menu and selected
the most inexpensive meal–ham steak, which was obviously
an extravagant dinner for them.
While their clothing was in stark contrast to diners
around them, my mother realized this was a special
outing for the couple and still treated them with the
same care and attention as her regular customers.
When they were finished, the man called my mother
over.
He turned to his wife and said, “See, I told you I was
places
Linda Dillman
going to bring you to a nice place.”
He then turned to my mother
and thanked her before handing
her the quarter and saying, “Here,
honey, this is for you.”
When I heard this story, I
cried. My mother did, as well.
It amazed me that here was a
woman who lived through a war,
lean times trying to find a job, a
move across the ocean and employment
in the service industry
with a foreign accent, but her best
memory of work was a 25-cent tip.
My mother made the day for
that couple, but they gave her a
memory for a lifetime.
Linda Dillman is a Messenger staff writer.
Creature film is back with some bite
Want to see apex predators on the big screen? Are
you not interested in watching them singing and dancing
and, you know, getting along with others? If so,
might I suggest the recently released “Crawl” to whet
your ravenous appetite?
If you’re like me, you miss the abundance of mindless
creature features that filled the summer blockbuster
slate in the 1990s and early 2000s. These films were
fun, simple, stupid and exactly what you wanted to see
during these long and hot months.
Unfortunately, like most species on this planet, this
genre became endangered and then practically extinct
due to human activity, or inactivity to be more precise,
at the box office. But unlike the former, powerful people
in charge may be looking to bring the latter back to life,
a welcome respite from the constant stream of comic
book adaptations, sequels and reboots. Though some
the reel deal
Dedra Cordle
may
not be thrilled with this potential bit of news, I say it is
cause for a generic celebration. Let the creature feature
reign!
In “Crawl,” the primary focus is on a competitive
swimmer named Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario) and
her strained relationship with her father Dale (Barry
Pepper). For reasons not well explained, these two had
a falling out several years ago and have been in minimal
contact since despite living a short distance away.
CREATURE
Continued from page 1
After a disastrous swim meet that could
imperil her scholarship at the University of
Florida, Haley is given two more pieces of
bad news: the first is that the strong tropical
storm has turned into a Category 5 hurricane
and the second is that her sister has
not heard from their father in days.
Despite knowing the perils of not getting
out of dodge during a weather event of that
magnitude, Haley travels back to their
hometown to search for their missing father.
When she arrives at his last known
residence, she finds their beloved dog Sugar
(Cso-Cso) frightened and all alone. Knowing
that he would not willingly leave the
pet behind, she takes the pooch with her to
their childhood home where they discover
his truck, tool belt and phone, but no estranged
father.
With a growing sense of unease, Haley
searches the house until the only place left
is their labyrinthine crawl space. Navigating
its dark curves, errant wiring and the
occasional rat and spider, she quite literally
stumbles upon the body of her partially
mauled and unconscious father. Not knowing
what caused his injuries, she uses a
makeshift tarp to try to drag him to safety.
But just as they nearly reach the stairway
to safe haven, a massive alligator strikes
from the shadows, leaving the humans
trapped in a maze of darkness that is
quickly being flooded with water.
Though the setting for this film is a
dank crawl space filled with murky water,
it isn’t hard to see the action that is taking
place: the use of light from director Alexandre
Aja (of “Piranha 3D” fame) and cinematographer
Maxime Alexandre put bigger
budget action films to shame. With this
usage, the trickery of light, it creates a
sense of heightened tension as the alligator
could literally be lurking anywhere. That is
not to mention the use of measuring tapes
as an awakened Dale uses it to calculate
how fast the water is rising, or him slipping
back into coach mode as he tries to coax his
daughter to make a swim for safety.
Like the creature feature films of the
past, and unlike the lesser versions on
SyFy, you find yourself rooting for these
characters to succeed and survive despite
their long odds. And a bonus is that they
don’t make too many stupid decisions unlike
their counterparts of yore.
So if you’re looking for something fun
and original and straightforward to see this
summer, consider “Crawl” as an option. It’s
a lean film that features decent jump
scares, an excellent use of light, and it constantly
taps into the fear of what is lurking
beneath the water’s surface or around any
dark corner.
Wally Biernacki and his partner, Lis Balson, both from Orono (Ontario-Canada) enjoy
sharing the history of steam engines and threshing machines. They travel throughout
Canada and the U.S. educating the public about Biernacki’s quarter-scale Case traction
steam engine and threshing machine.
Staff Writer
Preserving the past for the education of
the future is the new motto adopted by the
Miami Valley Steam Threshers Association
(MVSTA). Exhibitors at the 70th annual
show and reunion held July 18 - 21 at Pastime
Park in Plain City enjoyed educating
the public about everything steam.
MVSTA President, Gary Gallimore,
shared some history about the show.
“On a farm north of Troy, Ohio, half a
dozen guys got their equipment out and
played around with it, and that’s how it all
began,” he said.
Having fun with farm equipment is what
brings Unionville Center resident and exhibitor
Toni Ankrom to the show every year.
“I’ve been coming to the steam threshers
show since I was 12, when it was at the
Madison County Fairgrounds,” said
Ankrom. “Now I’m bringing my daughter,
Baleigh.”
The family’s 1940 John Deere H tractor
turned heads.
“When we bought the tractor, we asked
Baleigh what color she wanted it painted,
and she picked bright pink.”
Baleigh likes pink, but she also picked
the color in honor of the grandmother she
lost to breast cancer.
Orono (Ontario-Canada) resident Wally
Biernacki has attended the show for 20
years. He exhibits his Case traction steam
engine and hand-fed threshing machine in
Canada and the U.S., hoping that more
young people like Baleigh will want to learn
about steam threshers’ historic role in the
farming of yesteryear.
“I love to play with steam,” he said. “We
had a steam traction engine growing up on
our farm. I burned my fingers a lot, but you
learn. It’s a fascinating thing, because you
can run this engine, sit in a room with it,
and hear yourself think. That’s the beauty
of steam - it’s very quiet running.”
Lis Balson, Biernacki’s partner, said,
“Traction engines were the original farm
tractors. Then they developed gas engines.
During World War II there was a lack of
gasoline. Diesel had to go to the war effort,
so traction engines came back into service
and fed the army through WWII.”
Vintage steam equipment paved the way
to today, and the 10-ton Buffalo-Springfield
steam roller owned by Jack Seitz of
Stoutsville drew a crowd. His son, Nate
Seitz, also of Stoutsville, exhibited the
roller.
“I bought this for my dad,” he said. “He
has wanted a steam anything for forever.
This is our first piece of steam equipment.”
Seitz is looking up the history on the
roller. He was told it paved Highway 23
from Chillicothe to Waverly. More recently,
he put it to work when he rolled out a section
of the dirt road near his exhibit spot.
Asa Schreck, MVSTA vice president, appreciated
the smooth road as he drove his
golf cart around the park, assisting exhibitors
and show-goers.
“Do you see how smooth this road is after
they rolled it?” he asked.
And that appreciation for what steam
equipment has done and can do is what
keeps steam aficionados coming back to the
annual show and reunion.

this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
