Ellesmere look to make
• By Jacob Page
ELLESMERE WILL be aiming
for a faster start against the
Cantabrians on Saturday after
their sluggish first half led
to a 29-14 loss against Mid-
Canterbury.
The new-look Ellesmere side
were held scoreless during the
first 40min at Lincoln over the
weekend and trailed 12-0 at the
break. While they did manage
two tries in the second half, the
margin proved too much to catch.
29-14 loss to
Mid-Canterbury
on Saturday.
The hosts also lost the
Ashburton Auto Electrics Trophy,
which they won for the first time
in five years 12 months ago.
Ellesmere manager Michael
Sheat said the coaching staff
were happy with how with their
new combinations went in their
first game of the campaign.
“I thought we actually played
well to start and just couldn’t
get points on the board and
then they roared back at us.
Obviously, you’re bringing a lot
of guys together from various
clubs and the opposition was a
step up on club footy,” he said.
Ruck-time was particularly
physical.
“I thought there was plenty of
positives in there and I felt we got
better as the game went on.”
Sheat said it was a good
indication of where the squad
is ahead of their game against
North Canterbury for the
Southbridge Shield on August 24.
“We know where we need to
be for the game against North
Canterbury,” he said.
