Southbridge show mettle
in draw with Broadfield
• By Jacob Page
SOUTHBRIDGE finally showed
what they were made of to start
the all-important third round
of Selwyn premier netball with
a 57-all draw against Broadfield
on Saturday.
With the third round deciding
the semi-finalists in five weeks,
Southbridge produced their
best performance of the season
to prove they could be top-four
contenders after they pushed last
year’s finalists all the way.
In other results, Greenpark B
started swiftly and never looked
back in a 57-49 win over
Lincoln A and defending
champions, Greenpark A swept
aside newly promoted Prebbleton
A 72-37.
Southbridge A coach Sarah
Ormandy said her side played
well enough to win having led
by two goals late in the fourth
quarter but she says a draw
would do.
“We were in the lead right to
the end but a draw is good, certainly
better than losing by one.
“I felt we definitely had it over
them for the first half.
“We had minimal turnover and
we got turnovers off their ball.
“Our timing was good and the
shots were going in.
“I knew this performance was
there,” she said.
Broadfield coach Yvonne
Crichton-Hill said working on
some defensive combinations
and battling through
injuries were a priority.
She said her team was
outplayed for much of
the first three quarters
but she was happy how
her team battled back
to earn two competition
points.
Greenpark B player/
coach Mechelle Barltrop
said she couldn’t
have been happier with the outcome
of her team’s game against
Lincoln but the start needs some
improving.
“We were 5-0 down early and
I thought here we go again but
we went back to basics and the
shooting circle really stepped up
and we put it together.’’
The result reversed the loss
Greenpark B suffered to Lincoln
in round two.
“To prevent them a bonus
point could be quite important
so winning by more than seven
goals was great for us.
“We didn’t panic, we aren’t
a fast team and when we try to
play fast, we throw the ball away.
“Lincoln have a tall defensive
unit so we had to use our composure.”
Defending champions
Greenpark A continued
to roll with a comfortable
win over Prebbleton in
spite of missing five starters.
Coach Zaylie Sullivan
said in spite of the comfortable
result, she knew
Southbridge this Saturday
would be a tougher challenge.
“That’s a game which could be
tricky,” Sullivan said.
“We’ll need to be on our game
and hopefully we can get a few
players back.”
This Saturday’s games see
Lincoln play Prebbleton, Southbridge
battle Greenpark A and
Broadfield and Greenpark A
square-off.
Results – Broadfield A 57,
Southbridge A 57; Greenpark B
57, Lincoln A 49, Greenpark A
Table-toppers inflict
heavy defeat on Lincoln
LINCOLN COMBINED are
clinging to eighth spot in the UC
Championships following a 54-12
defeat to table-toppers Nelson
College, on Saturday.
The result means Lincoln will
need to scratch out at least a
bonus point against Christchurch
Boys’ High School this Saturday
to stay in the top eight.
The large Nelson College pack
forced Lincoln to think about
playing running rugby on a day
that dawned sunny in spite of a
heavy overnight downpour.
Nelson College scored two
quick tries as Lincoln’s season
SELWYN TIMES
theme of slow starts continued.
However, Lincoln’s fitness
seemed to keep them in the game
as they only trailed 21-7 at the
break.
The half-time team talk seemed
to do wonders for Nelson College
who were in a rampant mood
in the second half, scoring tries
from all parts of the field as they
strengthened their grip on top
sport on the ladder.
Lincoln need to hope that
St Thomas of Canterbury
College can beat Marlborough
Boys’ College, to help secure
eighth.
