Council to assess
all safety concerns
•From page 1
“Such as having a reduced
speed limit within the town
centres called courtesy zones.
We also know there
are concerns about
State Highway 1 but we
will be geo-fencing the
scooters so they begin to
slow down when out of
bounds.”
District council group
manager regulatory
services Tim Harris said
district council staff
will now assess Lava’s
proposal to make sure
all safety concerns are
addressed.
Mr Harris said a
report will then be
presented to councillors
once all evaluations
have been completed
and the property and
commercial team
have prepared a lease
agreement for the use of
council space.
“The lease agreement
affixes a dollar value
for rental of space if it is
required. The lease agreement
will most likely set out the rules
and requirements of the trial
too.”
The district council will then
vote on both Lime and Lava’s
proposals at the same
time.
“We need to make
sure that all the issues
have been addressed
through a robust
process before the
report is finalised
and it will only go to
council to vote on once
this has happened”
In May district
councillors voted to
give Lime Scooters a
six-month trial once
it has worked with
council staff on safety
concerns.
Lime’s proposal is
to introduce 200
scooters in Rolleston
only.
If all of the issues
discussed at the May
council meeting have
been addressed to
the satisfaction of
the council, e-scooters could
be operating for a trial period
beginning in December, Mr
Harris said.
TranzAlpine in spotlight
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
Peter Neale
THE TRANZALPINE will
feature in a British-made
documentary series The World’s
Most Scenic Railway Journeys.
London-based BriteSpark
Films will document the
TranzAlpine which operates
from Christchurch to
Greymouth in one episode of the
six-part series.
A film crew
has booked to
stay in Arthur’s
Pass where
they will also
film the people
who live there
and the worldfamous
keas.
West Melton
man Sam
Mackwell, who has spent more
than four years creating a new
type of steam train will feature
in the international documentary.
The Mackwell Locomotive
Company director has been
developing a boiler for a sustainable
steam locomotive to run on
wood rather than coal.
Mr Mackwell said being part
of the documentary is a good
opportunity to introduce new
technology.
“I believe it has a lot of poten-
STARRING ROLE: The
Arthur’s Pass railway station
is planned to feature in an
international documentary.
tial for reducing or eliminating
carbon dioxide emissions in the
future,” he said.
The historic Arthur’s Pass
and Springfield railway stations
will also feature heavily in the
documentary, the Selwyn Times
understands.
National Geographic magazine
rated the TranzAlpine as one of
the most scenic railway journeys
in the world in 2017.
Arthur’s Pass Alpine Motel
owner Peter Neale said the company
had booked into the motel
on Monday and Tuesday.
“I think it is awesome. It has
quite often been in the top 10
with reviews but the top six is
even more impressive,” he said.
Springfield Railway Station
Cafe leaseholder Heather Valphy
SELWYN TIMES
said she thought the filming
would take place on Saturday but
it had not been confirmed
“They are very interested in
the Barrys Bay cheese platters
we make for the train and they
are using that as a different
perspective rather than the usual
historic take on railway trips,”
she said.
Springfield and Arthur’s Pass
railway stations both have long
histories.
The Springfield station was established
in the 1880s operating
in the centre of the township. In
1923, it was moved to its current
location off King St before it was
rebuilt using pink summerhill
stone in 1966 after it burnt down.
In Arthur’s Pass, the first station
was built in 1914 but was
rebuilt in 1923 with the opening
of the Otira Tunnel and completion
of the Midland Line.
The station was destroyed by
fire in 1963. The present structure
was completed in 1966.
Selwyn Times has learnt the
documentary would likely air
on British television network
Channel 4.
The film company is also
planning to document a historic
locomotive at the Canterbury
Steam Preservation Society
based at McLeans Island.
