No matter our lifestyles, we put our bodies through a lot. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom chasing after kids all day, work 40 hours or more a week at a desk, or someone who goes to the gym consistently, you depend on your body to get you through the day. And often, we don’t take the care we should to recover and rejuvenate from all of the stress and pressure. Many of us go through life thinking that being in pain is normal or just a part of getting older. According to massage therapist and personal trainer Andrea Rivera, there are many things we can do to alleviate pain and help our bodies recover. To help her clients even more, Andrea is currently studying to become a licensed physiotherapist, focusing on injury prevention. One of the best ways to prevent injury is as simple as taking the time to stretch. “People don’t usually think about injury prevention until after they’ve had an injury,” she said. www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x August 15 — September 4, 2019 x 5 HOW TO ... Stretch Prevent Injury By Moving Your Body! Many of Andrea’s clients have cervical and/or lumbar spinal issues from sitting down for long periods of time or compressing the hips and muscles that cause a lot of leg pain, hamstring tightness and lumbar tightness. “Any form of stretching that helps elongate [the spine] and also helps align it properly is great,” she said. Andrea cultivated a set of stretches that anyone can do to help prevent injury as well as recover after a workout. These can also be done at home or anywhere you wish, even if you aren’t working out five days a week. “I chose these [stretches] in particular because you can use these after a workout, before a workout by Lauren Salinero if you add a little dynamic movement to it, and [they] are also ones you can do every day.” This series of movements can be done individually to target specific muscles you need to stretch, or it can be done as a routine. Taking a few minutes every day to help your muscles recover from the daily grind is the best kind of self-care. During each stretch, breathe out when going further into the stretch. Breathing in expands the ribs, and when you exhale, you can reach further. Each stretch can be held between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. Remember, if you stretch one side of the body, make sure you stretch the opposite side of the body, as well. Downward Dog — Start on all fours and move into a plank. Shift your hips and weight back, visualizing bringing your rear toward the ceiling. You can plant your feet to get a deeper stretch of the calves and hamstrings or go to the balls of your feet for a lighter stretch. Add some movement by bending one knee at a time, stretching the opposite heel toward the ground. This stretch targets your calves and hamstrings. For an upper back stretch, pulsate your chest toward your legs, bringing your head parallel with your arms.
