No matter our lifestyles, we put
our bodies through a lot. Whether
you’re a stay-at-home mom chasing
after kids all day, work 40
hours or more a week at a desk,
or someone who goes to the gym
consistently, you depend on your
body to get you through the day.
And often, we don’t take the care
we should to recover and rejuvenate
from all of the stress and
pressure. Many of us go through
life thinking that being in pain is
normal or just a part of getting
older.
According to massage therapist
and personal trainer Andrea
Rivera, there are many things we
can do to alleviate pain and help
our bodies recover. To help her clients
even more, Andrea is currently
studying to become a licensed
physiotherapist, focusing on injury
prevention. One of the best ways
to prevent injury is as simple as taking
the time to stretch.
“People don’t usually think about
injury prevention until after they’ve
had an injury,” she said.
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x August 15 — September 4, 2019 x 5
HOW TO ...
Stretch
Prevent Injury By Moving Your Body!
Many of Andrea’s clients have
cervical and/or lumbar spinal issues
from sitting down for long
periods of time or compressing
the hips and muscles that
cause a lot of leg pain, hamstring
tightness and lumbar
tightness.
“Any form of stretching that helps
elongate [the spine] and also helps
align it properly is great,” she said.
Andrea cultivated a set of stretches
that anyone can do to help prevent
injury as well as recover after
a workout. These can also be done
at home or anywhere you wish,
even if you aren’t working out five
days a week.
“I chose these [stretches] in particular
because you can use these
after a workout, before a workout
by Lauren Salinero
if you add a little dynamic movement
to it, and [they] are also ones
you can do every day.”
This series of movements can be
done individually to target specific
muscles you need to stretch, or it
can be done as a routine. Taking
a few minutes every day to help
your muscles recover from the daily
grind is the best kind of self-care.
During each stretch, breathe out
when going further into the stretch.
Breathing in expands the ribs, and
when you exhale, you can reach
further. Each stretch can be held
between 30 seconds and 2 minutes.
Remember, if you stretch one
side of the body, make sure you
stretch the opposite side of the
body, as well.
Downward Dog — Start on all fours and
move into a plank. Shift your hips and weight
back, visualizing bringing your rear toward the
ceiling. You can plant your feet to get a deeper
stretch of the calves and hamstrings or go to
the balls of your feet for a lighter stretch. Add
some movement by bending one knee at a time,
stretching the opposite heel toward the ground.
This stretch targets your calves and hamstrings.
For an upper back stretch, pulsate your chest
toward your legs, bringing your head parallel
with your arms.
Child’s Pose Twist — Start on your knees
with the tops of your feet flat on the ground. If
your feet are uncomfortable, widen your legs
so you aren’t sitting directly on top of them.
Crawl your hands down, reaching forward. If
you don’t feel the stretch, make sure you really
reach your arms forward. Once you feel the far
stretch, breath in, exhale and draw your chest
toward the ground, keeping your back flat. The
traditional Child’s Pose is an upper back stretch.
To incorporate the twist, reach your arms to
the side, stretching your oblique muscles, lats,
subscapularis and even down your arm if your
muscles are really tight.
Standing Bend — Standing straight,
interlock your fingers with your palms out
and toward ceiling. This hand position
fully stretches out your arms. You should
feel a stretch in your shoulders and arms.
Bend your upper body to the side. You can
bend from 2 centimeters to 7 inches. This
gravity-assisted stretch targets your triceps,
subscapularis and oblique muscles. It also
releases a lot of tension in the spine, helping
to expand and alight it.
Runner’s Lunge — From a plank, bring one
leg forward, parallel with your hands on the
ground. If your front knee isn’t pulled in close
to the body, don’t force it. Lift your back knee
off the ground, straightening your back leg.
If you can’t straighten the back leg, it’s OK
to keep it in a bent position on the ground
and work your way up. This stretch activates
the hip flexor and inner thigh. It’s a good
stretch for those who sit all day or do a lot of
driving, where the hip flexor is inhibited for
long periods of time. You can also shift your
weight forward and back to open the ankle
joint or circle your hips to get a glute and
lower back stretch along with the hip flexor.
Pec Stretch — Start by placing your hands
on the back of two posts — a doorway is a
great place to do this stretch — and push your
body forward. There are three arm positions to
target different muscles along with the pectoral
muscles. With the arms low, you stretch your
biceps and forearms, which is great for if you do
a lot of typing. A midway placement targets the
pectoralis major and can also help position your
shoulder for correct posture. With your arms up,
you’ll stretch both the pectoral major and minor
muscles. A lot of people with numbness down
their arms and tension headaches can benefit
from stretching their pectoralis minor. With this
stretch, it’s important to step out into the stretch,
keeping your body vertical. Don’t lean forward
into it. You can keep your feet parallel or step
out with one foot forward.
Knee Twist — Lie on the ground with your
arms out in a T shape. Bring your legs up with
your knees bent in a 90 degree angle, keeping
your lower legs parallel to the ground in a
tabletop position. Twist your legs toward one
side until your knee touches the ground, then
move them to the opposite side. It’s important to
keep both shoulders and your lower back flat
on the ground. Though you may be tempted to
point your toes, that will activate your muscles
instead of keeping this a stretch, so keep your
toes flexed. This is a full body stretch and is
Andrea’s favorite in her arsenal. For a more
advanced version, straighten your legs. Your
knees and feet should stay together when you
twist at the hips. If your feet want to separate
or your knees want to bend, stick with the
traditional version.
No. 4 Leg Crossover — Lie on your back and
start with your feet planted on the ground. Bring
one foot across the top of the other thigh. It doesn’t
matter if it’s your foot, ankle or calf resting on
the other leg, whatever feels comfortable and
natural. Take the hand of the same leg that is
on top and thread it through the opening your
legs have made. Grasp the shin of the leg on
the ground. If you can’t reach your shin, it’s OK
to grab the hamstring of that leg instead. Pull
your bottom leg in toward your chest. This stretch
targets the IT band and glute of the leg on top.
You can also rock from side to side to get a more
advanced stretch of the IT band. ª

My Child’s Healthcare
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
My neighbor recently
told me a horrifying story
about her daughter. While
my neighbor was away on
a business trip, she left her
15 year old daughter with
her grandparents. During
my neighbor’s absence, her
daughter was thrown from a horse and incurred a severe spine injury. She was
rushed to the hospital and the doctors informed the grandparents that, because they
were not their granddaughter’s legal guardians, they could not make any medical
decisions on her behalf. What are parents to do if their child is away and out of
their reach while staying with others and their child needs consent for emergency
medical treatment?
It is complicated. Sadly, in the event of tragedy, more than 50% of all adults have
no health care documents for themselves whatsoever. If conscious when they enter
the hospital, the hospital will typically provide a health care document for them to
sign authorizing doctors to treat them. Although, if they are unconscious and have
no health care directives and have not authorized another adult to make decisions
on their behalf, no one, not even a spouse, can authorize immediate treatment. It
can become even more horrifying for a child, conscious or unconscious. Consider
the following examples.
Alice came in from gardening to answer a ringing telephone. A friend of her
son at college 3 states away gave her terrifying news that her son, Michael, was
seriously injured in a motorcycle accident and was taken unconscious to the hospital.
Alice immediately called the emergency room where her son was taken but was told
by the doctor that because Michael was 18 years old and now an adult, she could
not authorize treatment unless she had a health care directive naming her as
Michael’s surrogate. Consent would have required Michael, before leaving for
college, to have prepared a health care directive naming Alice as his surrogate.
Grace, 12 years old, went camping with her friend’s family. While hiking,
Grace fell off of a rocky cliff and suffered a concussion requiring immediate
medical treatment. Because her friend’s parents had no authorization to give
medical consent, Grace suffered for 48 hours until her parents could be reached
and drive to the hospital to authorize treatment. Had Grace’s parents prepared
health care directives authorizing her friend’s parents to act as Grace’s heath
care surrogate, treatment would have been immediate.
According to Florida law, only a natural guardian, legal custodian, or legal
guardian of a a person or minor child may designate a competent adult to
serve as a surrogate to make health care decisions. And although we believe
our children are always our children, once they turn 18 years old, only they may
make such decisions.
Before you send your minor child on
a road trip with friends, leave them for the
weekend with family or friend while you are
away, or see your adult child off to college,
consult with an estate planning attorney
and prepare the necessary documents to
protect them.
All-Female Practice Provides Expert Women’s Health Care
Ask any woman between the ages
of 13 and 65 if she would prefer to
see a male or female gynecologist,
and the answer is more often than
not, “female.” Many women seek out
female physicians, because they are
perceived to be gentler and more
understanding. And, when it comes
to obstetrics and gynecology especially,
most women prefer to share
their female health concerns with a
female doctor.
Luckily for the women of the
Southwest Orlando community, there
is an OB/GYN practice nearby that
is led by a woman and employs
only females. The practice of Lori
Lambert, M.D., located in Suite
5 at 7051 Dr. Phillips Blvd., offers
services related to menopause, contraception,
pregnancy, gynecology,
ultrasounds, annual well-woman
“Being a wife, working mom and a
mother of two sons has helped me to
not only be better in providing quality
care but to also be able to empathize
with my patients regarding
health issues and life experiences,”
Dr. Lambert said.
Dr. Lambert’s father was in the
Air Force, and her family moved
frequently to different areas of the
country and overseas. She has resided
in Florida since 1971. She
earned her undergraduate degree at
Florida State University, her medical
degree at the University of Florida,
and completed her residency and
post-graduate training at Orlando
Regional Medical Center. She has
been in private practice since 1989,
opening her own practice in 1991.
Dr. Lambert is known as a “second
patient population includes patients
that she delivered. She treats women
of all ages, from adolescence to
menopause, and continues to deliver
“The staff is like family here,” said
Crystal Bruning, office manager.
“We have some staff members who
have worked here for over 10 years.
We feel we have a staff that is very
comfortable with each other and
work well together.”
Bruning relayed the story of her
own daughter, who at age 14 had
a rare childhood cancer manifesting
in the form of a polyp. Dr. Lambert
found and removed it, saving the
teen’s life.
Dr. Lambert is affiliated with
Orlando Health, including Dr.
endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain,
cervical diseases, uterine diseases,
polycystic ovary syndrome and fibroids.
She also provides prenatal
thorough physician, who,
when needed, will hold her patients’
hands and even cry with them. She
knows how her patients are feeling
and feels it, too.
She is assisted by a female staff of
Truly Golden!
Make Your Retirement Years the Best Ever!
Luxurious accommodations, the
latest in tasty cuisine, watching fireworks
while enjoying wine with
friends: sound like the makings of the
best resort experience Central Florida
can offer?
It is actually what each day brings
to the residents of HarborChase in
Dr. Phillips, a nationwide retirement
community that offers top-quality senior
living amenities for independent
living, assisted living and memory
care as well as opulent care for those
with assisted living and memory care
needs.
“You will feel hospitality when you
walk into HarborChase in Dr. Phillips,
with all our apartments with beautiful
furnishings, world-class chefs
and always lots to do here,” said
Heather Corton, executive director
at HarborChase. “A lot of our
residents were members of country
clubs, so they want to feel like they
are living at the club now, which we
can definitely replicate.”
So Much to Do!
Upon move-in day, the red carpet is
rolled out and champagne toasts are
given, literally, as all the HarborChase
managers celebrate their newest resident
and his/her family as they arrive
in the facility’s own Lincoln SUV.
New residents are appointed resident
and associate ambassadors that
show them to their rooms, give them a
tour of the community, and make sure
they are given a calendar of events.
From there, the sky’s the limits on
what residents can do, from aqua aerobics
to playing recreational games
with other residents to even enjoying
fireworks from nearby Universal
Studios on the patio lounge.
Three on-site restaurants are available
for residents and their guests:
formal, casual and bistro. The chefprepared
meals come courtesy of
the community’s award-winning chef,
Residents of HarborChase in Dr. Phillips enjoy an array of amenities, including an on-site salon.
Anthony Polito, whose food is described
by Heather as “food [that]
looks like art. It is very fusion-oriented
and is amazing. We have herb walls,
so Anthony clips fresh herbs to give
all his meals a fresh pop of flavor.”
Among the amenities are two fullsize
gyms, two full-service salons, a
zero-entry pool, a spacious dog park
(as HarborChase is pet-friendly), and
available services for out-patient therapy.
Those in the assisted living and
memory care wings have the pleasure
of getting daily hair treatments by the
on-site stylist and being dressed in fresh
clothes that reflect their personalities.
“We always want to make sure our
resi dents are very dignified,” Heather
said.
Transportation by the community’s
own bus or Lincoln SUV is available
for grocery-shopping and doctor visits,
as well as group outings to the
theater, ball games and even out to
lunch or dinner.
Hospitality at Its Core
“We are definitely focused as a
company on hospitality,” said Heather,
who has been with HarborChase for
six years and previously worked with
other communities in Central Florida
and Texas.
What began as 10 communities
by parent company Harbor
Retirement Corp. in Vero Beach has
now expanded to 30 communities
on the East Coast, with 10 more to
open during the next two years.
HarborChase of Dr. Phillips currently
has 100 residents, with the ability to
accommodate 185.
Once a month, residents are asked
for their feedback on the community
and its activities, as HarborChase
wants to make sure every day feels like
a vacation in paradise for its residents.
“They really enjoy going to the
theater, so that will be a focus, and
they want to go to the UCF football
games,” Heather said. “They want to
tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
go [watch] the Orlando Magic and
the Rays. They love going out and
about.”
With HarborChase near its oneyear
anniversary in December,
Heather hopes for HarborChase to
become more ingrained in the community.
A board member for the UCF
Rosen College of Hospitality, Heather
wants to offer more internships for
students at HarborChase, as well as
more involvement with local charities
in the Dr. Phillips area.
The community recognizes its roots
with the game room named after the
area patriarch, Dr. Philip Phillips,
and its address on Della Drive,
named for Dr. Phillips’ wife.
HarborChase is the community to
live in when celebrating your golden
years, so stop by for a visit and see
luxury senior living at its finest.
The Health Law Firm attorney Lance
Leider recently won a favorable outcome
of a Medicare audit case on
behalf of his client, a psychiatrist. The
audit was conducted by a Medicare
HMO, WellCare Health Plans Inc.,
on a psychiatrist seeing Medicare
patients and billing them for the services.
After the audit, the Medicare
plan demanded a refund of more
than $40,000 from the physician,
alleging that he had been overpaid
by that amount. Lance successfully
rebutted the findings of the auditors,
resulting in a decision completely in
favor of the doctor. The demand for
repayment was dismissed entirely.
