What would my dream job be?
“My dream job is to be the head of a cardiothoracic anesthesiology
department. I have loved the idea of studying Medicine since I was
four years old. First, I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, then it changed Crawford Preparatory Fourways
to being a cardiac surgeon and then finally cardiothoracic surgeon.
I realised that if I want to become a surgeon, I will have to work with an anesthetist. I now have a dream to be a
cardiothoracic anesthetist. I have had a few surgeries in my life, and every single time the anesthesiologist was very
kind and understanding. They are amazing, and I would like to do this as a career. There are many fields in Medicine,
and when I get too old for the operating room, I could then become a general practitioner.” – Jarad Tromp, Grade 7
“I didn’t even know the answer to this question until quite recently. I want to be an animal trainer because I love
animals with a passion. I love caring for them, and an animal trainer does precisely that. They train animals to help
the disabled and also just to instill obedience in animals. To spend my day working with animals would make me
extremely happy.” – Mia van der Walt, Grade 7
We explored the central idea
of the natural world and its laws
for the unit on inquiry called
How the World Works. During
the Technology lessons, Mrs.
Ferreira and the Crawford
Italia Grade 7s collaboratively
followed a brief to construct a
tower. They planned, designed
and constructed towers taking
into consideration the laws of
nature. A discussion on the
pros and cons of each design
concluded the design process.
Taking agency and action to make a
difference!
The Crawford Preparatory La Lucia
Grade 3 pupils, whose unit of inquiry
is Saving the Planet, have been
investigating the human impact on
different natural environments and
are saddened to see how much
damage plastic is doing to our ocean
and its creatures. Our Grade 3 pupils
wrote letters to various SPAR owners
to try and initiate a change in their
choice of packaging. Eyael Belayneh
showed great initiative when she
questioned the manager of her local
SPAR on why customers were offered
a choice of plastic bags which are
50c each, compared to brown paper
bags at R2.75! She was happy to
report back to us that they are in the
process of phasing the plastic bags
out completely. Well done, Eyael, for
making a difference!
The unit of inquiry, Where we are in
Time and Place, sent the Crawford
Italia Grade 2s on an adventure
experiencing what it means to
‘explore’. Many a treasure was
found on the “big” field at school.
Upon returning to the classroom,
they questioned and reported their
findings to the class.
The sky’s no longer the limit in Mrs.
De Beer’s Technology room!
The Crawford Preparatory La Lucia
Grade 6 pupils have embarked upon
a journey to Mars. A marvellous
mesh of learning, creativity,
planning, budgeting, designing,
collaborating and communicating
took place while these ‘astronauts’
prepared to inhabit the “red planet”.
With the assistance of their teacher,
the students all applied to NASA
for their names to be etched onto a
microchip that would travel with the
new rover to Mars in 2020. There was
great excitement when they received
their Mars ‘boarding passes’.
