Rejected petitions The Board of Elections rejected several petitions for various errors. As a result, the following individuals who filed petitions will not be candidates in the Nov. 5 election: • Thomas E. Boyd who filed for the London mayor’s race; • Richard Steven Rice, Plain City village council; • Jim B. King, West Jefferson village council at-large; • Michael Allen English, Madison-Plains school board, unexpired term; • William A. Wilcox, Darby Township fiscal officer; • John E. Griffith, Range Township trustee. • Rebecca K. Burns, Pleasant Township fiscal officer; and • Mark A. Harden, Pleasant Township trustee. According to Aaron To, deputy director at the Board of Elections, the following are some of the reasons petitions are rejected: insufficient valid signatures, candidate failed to properly fill out the nominating petition, candidate dated the petition after individuals signed it, and individuals circulating petitions did not sign the circulator statement. Write-in deadline Individuals who wish to run in the election as write-in candidates must file their declarations of intent with the Board of Elections by 4 p.m. Aug. 26. Write-in candidates’ names do not appear on the ballot. The filing deadline for candidates whose names will appear on the Nov. 5 election ballot was Aug. 7. Individuals whose petitions were rejected for the Aug. 7 deadline are not permitted to run as write-in candidates in the Nov. 5 election.

For registration information, call the Madison County Board of Elections at (740) 852-9424. • Fairfield Township tax levy—Renewal of 4.5 mills and an increase of 0.25 mill for five years for fire protection and emergency service; • Hurt/Battelle Memorial Library of West Jefferson tax levy—Renewal of 1.5 mills for five years for current expenses; • Jefferson Local School District tax levy—Additional 3.5 mills for seven years for the emergency requirements of the school district; • London City School District income tax—Renewal of 1 percent for five years for current operating expenses; • London Public Library tax levy— Renewal of 1.5 mills for five years for current expenses; • Madison County tax levy—Renewal of 1.3 mills for five years for operation and maintenance of Fairhaven programs for developmentally disabled persons; • Madison County tax levy—Renewal of 1 mill and an increase of 0.15 mill for five years for continuing the services of the TURF Continued from page 1 changes are needed specific to rental of the synthetic turf field. Currently, the policy allows rental of the high school stadium. Fees depend on who wants to use it. There is no charge for Jonathan Alder residents, school groups, alumni, booster clubs, parent-teacher organizations, Scouts, youth recreation programs and adult education programs. The fee is $500 without lights or $750 with lights for local community groups, such as service clubs, the Chamber of Commerce, civic organizations, churches (for occasional use), adult sports groups, and the county arts council. The fee is $750 without lights or $1,000 with lights for other groups, such as businesses, churches (for regular use), and other schools. The facility use policy states that the school board considers the school premises to be “a community center operating in partnership with other groups within the community” and encourages community groups to use them. However, board president Steve Votaw said the circumstances associated with the new field are different, since the field was paid for primarily through private donations at a cost of over $500,000. He also stated, “If you ruin this turf, it’s a major expense, probably,” as opposed to repairing a grass field. Board member Shannon Foust said the district should discourage rental of the field or not offer it at all. Board member Christine Blacka wondered if the district would need to charge renters a separate fee to have a trained person run the new high-tech scoreboard, Madison County-London City Health District; • Paint Township tax levy—Renewal of 1.1 mills for five years for maintaining and operating cemetery; • Pleasant-Darby Union Cemetery District tax levy—Renewal of 1 mill for five years for maintaining and operating cemeteries; • Pleasant Valley Joint Fire District tax levy—Replacement of 10 mills for five years for fire and emergency medical service; • Range Township tax levy—Renewal of 1.2 mills for five years for maintaining and operating Range Township cemeteries; • Range Township tax levy—Renewal of 0.6 mill for five years for maintenance, salaries, and purchasing supplies for the Range Township Volunteer Fire Department; • Sterling Joint Ambulance District tax levy No. 1—Renewal of 1.5 mills for five years for current expenses; • Sterling Joint Ambulance District tax levy No. 2—Renewal of 1.5 mills for five years for current expenses; • Village of South Solon tax levy—Renewal of 2 mills for five years for current expenses. which cost over $150,000. Chapman said the district has “never said no” to requests for renting the stadium. He also noted that some school districts charge, no matter who wants to use their facilities. Board members asked Chapman to look into what other districts do. They want comparisons for facility rentals in general, plus information from districts that have made the switch from grass to synthetic turf. They also asked him to look into possible liability issues and the scoreboard operation question. Chapman said he will report back with the information at the next school board meeting, set to take place at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the high school. Also at the Aug. 12 meeting, Chapman shared key back-to-school dates for Jonathan Alder. They include: • Monroe Elementary preschool parent night and kindergarten open house—Aug. 19, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; • Plain City Elementary School Year’s Eve for grades 1-4—Aug. 19, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; • Canaan Middle School fifth-grade open house–Aug. 19, 6-7 p.m.; • Jonathan Alder Junior High open house—Aug. 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m.; • Monroe Elementary School Year’s Eve for grades 1-4—Aug. 20, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; • Plain City Elementary Kindergarten Year’s Eve—Aug. 20, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; • Canaan Middle School sixth-grade open house—Aug. 20, 6-7 p.m.; • Plain City Elementary preschool open house—Aug. 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m. • First day of school—Aug. 21.
