September is national Library Card Sign-Up Month. Here at Burbank Public Library, we have more than 100,000 Library
card holders. Even though that looks like the entire population of Burbank, many of our users come from surrounding
cities, and people move in and out of Burbank all the time. Despite the Library’s long history as one of Burbank’s core
institutions, we still need to reach people who haven’t signed up.
There are people who had Library cards as children and don’t realize the Library has just as much to offer adults. There
are people paying hundreds of dollars per year for books and DVDs and streaming services who don’t realize they can
get it all for free at the Library. Some may worry about fines or the trouble of coordinating a trip to return items on time
but aren’t aware of our growing electronic collections, which offer books, audiobooks, movies and music that can be
accessed 24/7 from anywhere and get checked back in automatically with no fines.
We need the help of our regular users to get the word out about all the Library has to offer. If you have a friend,
neighbor or family member who doesn’t use Burbank Public Library, pass this newsletter along and let them know
what you love about your Library and your Library card. Your Library card connects you with 400,000 physical items and
800,000 electronic items, opening an endless world of learning and entertainment. Your Library card gives you access
to specialized resources like Ancestry.com for genealogy, Mango Languages for online language learning, NoveList for
reading recommendations, and the ProQuest Newsstand for online access to more than 3,000
publications worldwide including the LA Times.
If you’ve used your Library card for these or any other reasons, snap a photo of the card in
action, tag it #getcardedburbank, and be entered in a prize drawing. September is the month to
share your Library card love.
because everyone benefits
Libraries assist people of all backgrounds, ages and
financial means, in every part of our country.
There are approximately 16,000 public library
buildings across the U.S. today offering a wide variety
of resources, services and benefits all for free to users.
As a result, library benefits are available to all,
regardless of income level, background or locale.
• 91% of Americans ages 16 and older say public
libraries are important to their communities
• And 76% say libraries are important to them and
their families
• American adults of all age group visited libraries
in the past year including
o 62% of those aged 16-17
o 57% of those aged 18-29,
o 59% of those aged 30-49
o 51% of those aged 50-64
o and 40% of those aged 65+
